If your Windows PC is slow or a feature is unavailable, start by identifying exactly what is affected and when it began. Whole-PC slowness calls for checks of storage, startup apps, updates, malware and hardware limits; a problem with Bluetooth, audio, Wi-Fi or another specific feature calls for that feature’s diagnostic path. If it began after an update, app installation, device change or settings change, note that before making repairs.
First, narrow down what is slow or unavailable
Work out whether the issue affects the whole computer, one Windows feature, one app, or a connected device. Record any error message or code, when the problem started, and whether it followed a Windows update or another change. This helps distinguish a general performance problem from a fault with a particular component—and avoids applying unrelated fixes.

- The whole PC is slow: Check common performance causes before assuming Windows is damaged.
- One feature or device is failing: Use the diagnostic for that feature, if Microsoft provides one.
- Windows Update reports an error: Write down the exact code and use the instructions for that code and your Windows version.
Why is your Windows PC running slowly?
Microsoft lists limited storage, too many startup apps or background processes, outdated software, malware and hardware limitations among possible causes. Several can contribute at the same time. Microsoft’s guidance says, “We recommend trying all the listed solutions as multiple factors can contribute to slow performance.” (Microsoft Support: Tips to improve PC performance in Windows.)
- Check storage: Remove temporary files with Storage Sense or Disk Cleanup, using the option available on your Windows version.
- Review startup and background apps: Close apps you do not need and check which programs launch automatically.
- Install relevant updates: Check Windows updates, including relevant optional driver updates.
- Scan for malware: Run a scan with Windows Security.
- Consider hardware limits: Older PCs may not improve substantially through software changes alone.
These checks are a sensible starting point, not a guarantee that a slow computer will return to its original performance.

Why isn’t a particular Windows feature available?
When one feature is missing, unresponsive or failing, use Microsoft’s Get Help diagnostic for that feature rather than running unrelated troubleshooters. Microsoft lists diagnostics for audio, Bluetooth, camera, network and internet, printers, program compatibility, video playback, Windows Media Player and Windows Update. The diagnostics scan system configuration and report findings or suggested remedies. Menu names and routes can vary between Windows 10 and Windows 11 and may change with updates.
Open the Microsoft Support troubleshooting page, choose the entry for the affected feature, and follow the result it provides.

If Bluetooth will not connect
Before treating the problem as a Windows fault, check that your PC supports Bluetooth, Bluetooth is switched on, and the accessory is charged, in pairing mode and within range. If those basics are in place, try removing and re-adding the device, checking for Windows updates or drivers, and using the Bluetooth troubleshooter. A flat battery or an accessory out of range has a different remedy from a broken Windows component. See Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance.

If Wi-Fi or network access fails
First check whether all network access is affected or only one app or website. For Windows 11, Microsoft directs users to the automated Network and Internet troubleshooter in Get Help. Avoid making broad system changes when the fault is limited to a single site or application. See Microsoft’s Wi-Fi connection guidance.

What should you try after a Windows update?
If the trouble began after an update, keep that timing in mind and record any Windows Update error code exactly. Different codes can point to different causes, including insufficient space, connectivity problems, drivers or corrupted files; one generic fix is not appropriate for every error.
- Check the code against Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance, selecting the entry relevant to your Windows version.
- Follow the steps for that code. Depending on the case, Microsoft’s guidance may include checking connectivity and free space, running the Windows Update troubleshooter, or repairing system files.
- If the problem clearly started after the update and the matching instructions do not resolve it, consider the applicable recovery option described below.
Space requirements depend on the specific update or upgrade case. Check Microsoft’s current guidance for the requirement that applies to your error rather than relying on a general threshold.

When and how to repair Windows system files
System-file repair is appropriate when symptoms or troubleshooting point to missing or corrupted Windows files—not as the first response to every slow PC or unavailable feature. Microsoft Support explains, “When critical Windows system files are missing or corrupted, your operating system may begin to malfunction.” Its documented sequence is DISM first, then System File Checker (SFC). Both commands require an elevated Command Prompt.
- Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand allow it to finish. - Then run
sfc /scannowand let the scan complete.
The commands can take time. DISM ordinarily uses Windows Update as its repair source; if Windows Update itself is broken, a valid alternate repair source may be needed. Do not download replacement system files from unofficial sites. Follow Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions.
Escalate to Windows recovery only when needed
Microsoft recommends moving through recovery options from least disruptive to more disruptive, beginning with the troubleshooter that matches the problem. Depending on what happened and which options remain available, later steps may include uninstalling a recent update, returning to a previous Windows version, or reinstalling Windows. Some recovery choices can cause data loss, so back up important files before proceeding.
Installation media is a recovery tool, not a routine fix for everyday slowness. If you need it, Microsoft describes using another working PC to download Windows and create bootable installation media on a USB flash drive. Follow Microsoft’s Windows recovery options and installation media instructions.
