Low liquidity means there is not much crypto available to trade near the current price. A large market order can use up the best-priced offers and continue filling at worse prices; on an automated-market-maker (AMM) decentralized exchange, the swap itself shifts the pool’s asset ratio. Check the spread, estimated average fill and liquidity for the exact trading pair before confirming. Limit orders and smaller executions can help control the trade, but each comes with trade-offs.

What slippage is—and how it differs from spread

Slippage is the difference between the price you expect when placing a trade and the price at which it actually executes. It can be unfavorable or favorable. The bid-ask spread is different: it is the gap between the available buy and sell quotes. A trade may incur the spread, then experience additional slippage if it consumes available liquidity or the market moves before execution. Coinbase’s explanation of slippage and spread describes how these costs appear in its products; the display and safeguards are not necessarily the same on other platforms.

Why low liquidity changes your execution price

On an order-book exchange

An order book lists buy and sell orders at different prices. A market order takes the best available opposite-side orders first. The quantity at the top price may be small; once it is used up, the remaining order matches at the next available prices. The resulting average fill can differ from the last traded price or the quote visible when you submitted the order. A large order relative to nearby depth, or low trading activity, makes this more likely. Coinbase’s order-management guidance explains that market orders can fill at multiple prices, while its Markets Trading Rules note that a market order can fill less favorably than the most recent trade price depending on the orders on the book.

On an AMM decentralized exchange

An AMM swap uses the assets held in a liquidity pool rather than matching against a conventional visible order book. The swap changes the pool’s balance ratio, so a larger trade relative to the pool can cause greater price impact. A slippage-tolerance setting specifies how far execution may deviate before the transaction is rejected; it does not add liquidity or guarantee a favorable fill. Exact labels, defaults and routing behavior depend on the DEX. Binance Academy’s slippage guide, updated May 13, 2026, discusses these mechanics and mitigation approaches.

What to check before placing a trade

  • Liquidity for the exact pair: Look at nearby order-book depth for a centralized exchange, or pool liquidity and expected price impact for a DEX. Liquidity varies by asset, pair, venue and time; headline trading volume alone does not show how much can execute near your price.
  • Spread: Compare the available buy and sell quotes. A wide spread is a cost distinct from slippage.
  • Estimated average fill: Compare the estimate with the quote or price you expected, and check how much of the order is expected to execute at each price. Estimates can become stale as prices and available quantities change. Coinbase says its market-order interface displays slippage and average-price estimates; that is a Coinbase-specific feature, not a universal display.
  • Order size and urgency: Consider the quantity you want to trade alongside the available liquidity and how quickly it must execute. A trade that can wait may allow more price control; an urgent trade may place greater weight on immediate completion.
  • DEX tolerance: Check the maximum deviation you are accepting. A setting that is too tight can reject the swap; a looser setting allows a worse execution price.

Ways to reduce slippage—and what they cost

Choose a more liquid venue or pair

More quantity near the current price can reduce how many price levels an order consumes, or reduce the swap’s price impact relative to pool size. Compare executable liquidity and spread for the specific pair, not just the platform’s overall volume. Conditions can change, so a venue that is liquid at one moment may not offer the same depth later.

Use a limit order when price control matters more than immediate completion

A limit order sets the maximum price you will pay when buying or the minimum price you will accept when selling. Coinbase states that its limit order fills at the specified price or better and may fill partially; it may also remain open without filling. See Coinbase’s order-management page and order-types guide for those product-specific details. A limit price controls the acceptable price, not whether or when the market will reach it.

Reduce the order size or split execution

A smaller order may consume less nearby liquidity at once. Splitting a large trade into portions can likewise reduce immediate market impact, but it is not automatically better: later portions face future price movements, and additional executions can change total fees. Only split or schedule a trade when the time exposure and market conditions make sense for your objective.

Use scheduled execution if the platform offers it

Some platforms offer time-weighted average price (TWAP) orders, which divide an order into smaller executions over intervals. Coinbase describes this approach in its order-types guide. Availability and execution design are platform-specific; scheduling does not guarantee a target price or eliminate market risk.

Set DEX slippage tolerance deliberately

Choose a tolerance that reflects how much price deviation you are willing to accept. If execution moves beyond a tight limit, the transaction may fail; a looser limit permits a worse execution price. The setting is a boundary for acceptance, not a way to improve the pool’s liquidity or a guarantee of safety.

How to choose between execution approaches

Approach Potential benefit Trade-off
Market order Prioritizes execution against currently available liquidity. Can fill across several prices, so the average may be less favorable than the quote or last trade.
Limit order Constrains the acceptable buy or sell price. May remain open or fill only partially; execution is not guaranteed.
Smaller or split order May reduce immediate consumption of nearby depth. Extends exposure to price changes and can affect total fees through additional executions.
Scheduled execution such as TWAP Breaks a larger order into executions over time, where supported. Platform-specific and does not guarantee a target price or remove market risk.
AMM swap with slippage tolerance Rejects execution if price deviation exceeds the chosen boundary. A tight boundary can cause failure; a loose one accepts a worse possible price.

For an order book, weigh price control against the chance of a complete, immediate fill, alongside the spread and depth for the actual pair. For an AMM swap, include estimated price impact and the tolerance boundary. Fees and platform availability can also affect the choice, but they vary by platform and jurisdiction.

Why there is no single “normal” slippage percentage

Slippage depends on the asset, pair, venue, order size, liquidity and conditions at execution, so a universal percentage would be misleading. Coinbase Institutional’s May 27, 2022 study, “Temporary market impact vs order book liquidity,” examined selected regulated venues and Coinbase Prime for larger USD-notional orders. Its observations—including results for orders below $5 million and a comparison at $2 million—were specific to that study’s venues, sample and date, not a current rate that can be applied to an individual trade.
