If a Windows app will not install, will not launch, crashes, or loses a feature on a Snapdragon X laptop, do not assume the processor is the cause. Separate the problem into four possibilities: an app that lacks a suitable Arm build, an x86 or x64 app whose emulated code has a defect, a missing or blocked Arm64 driver, or a Windows/app version that needs updating. Then test those possibilities in that order. Windows 11 can emulate many traditional Windows apps, while native Arm64 software usually performs best; neither route can make an incompatible kernel driver work.
What “compatibility” means on a Snapdragon X laptop
Snapdragon X laptops run Windows 11 on Arm64 hardware. That changes how software is executed, but it does not make the computer limited to Arm-only applications.

Native Arm64 applications
An application rebuilt for Windows on Arm runs as native Arm64 code. Microsoft says, “Apps rebuilt for Windows Arm-based PCs have the best performance.” Native builds generally offer the most predictable startup, battery use and responsiveness because they do not need a translation layer.
Emulated x86 and x64 applications
Windows 11 can translate many applications compiled for conventional x86 or x64 PCs. Microsoft identifies Prism as the emulation technology associated with improved emulated-app performance in Windows 11 version 24H2. Microsoft says Prism is available on Copilot+ PCs powered by Snapdragon X series processors. Confirm the Windows version and the laptop’s specifications rather than assuming every Arm laptop has identical support.

Emulation applies to the application’s user-mode code. It does not automatically provide a compatible kernel driver, hardware filter, anti-cheat module, virtualization component or other low-level dependency. An app can therefore install and open while one important feature remains unavailable.
Drivers are a separate compatibility gate
Microsoft’s Windows Arm guidance states, “Drivers for hardware, games, and apps only work if they’re designed for a Windows 11 Arm-based PC.” A printer utility, security product, assistive technology, virtual-machine component, game anti-cheat system, network adapter or graphics accessory may require a driver that is absent even when the main application can be emulated.

Capture the failure before changing settings
Write down the evidence while the failure is reproducible. A precise record prevents you from treating a device-driver fault as an ordinary app crash.

- Copy the complete error. Save a screenshot or transcribe the wording, including codes such as “This app or game can’t run on your device.” Note whether the message appears during installation, at launch or after a feature is selected.
- Describe the history. Say whether the app ever worked on this laptop, whether the problem began after an app or Windows update, and whether a reinstall changed anything.
- Separate the affected feature. Test the app without the printer, scanner, game controller, VPN, security plug-in, virtual machine or other accessory if possible. If the basic app works but the connected feature fails, investigate the driver rather than the app binary.
- Record the platform. In Settings, note the Windows edition and version, the laptop model and whether it is a Copilot+ PC. Also note whether the device has recently restarted after an update.
These details give the publisher or hardware maker a reproducible case and help distinguish a version-specific defect from a general Windows problem.

Check the app’s architecture and publisher support
Look first in the Microsoft Store listing or on the software publisher’s support page. Search for “Windows on Arm,” “Windows Arm64” or “native Arm64,” and check the version number against the release you installed.
Use the publisher’s support statement, not only the installer result
An installer that starts is not proof that the complete product is supported. Read the requirements for plug-ins, hardware acceleration, services and drivers. A publisher may describe its main executable as compatible while listing a separate Arm64 download for a printer utility or security component.
Interpret the architecture result
- Native Arm64 is listed: install that build when it matches your Windows release. It is normally the best performance and battery option.
- x86 or x64 is listed with Windows 11 support: the app may run through emulation. Confirm that the current release and all optional components are supported.
- Only an older desktop release is offered: try the compatibility steps below, but ask the publisher whether the release is supported on Windows on Arm.
- A driver, service or kernel module is required: look for an Arm64 driver or an explicit Windows-on-Arm statement. Emulation of the visible app cannot substitute for it.
Availability changes as publishers ship new builds. Check the publisher’s current documentation for your exact laptop and Windows version rather than relying on a general statement that an app “runs on Windows.”

Microsoft Store applications
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Choose Get updates and allow the Store to install available updates.
- Restart Windows if the app or Store requests it, then test the same action that originally failed.
Traditional desktop applications
Use the publisher’s own update mechanism or download the current installer from its official support site. Do not assume that uninstalling a working emulated build and installing a random older package will improve compatibility. If the publisher offers separate Arm64 and x64 downloads, choose the Arm64 package for a native installation.
Windows and built-in drivers
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available quality, feature and driver updates, then restart when prompted.
- Re-test the app and the specific feature that failed.
Microsoft’s general older-app guidance also recommends updating device drivers through Windows Update when an application opens but flickers, becomes unresponsive or behaves incorrectly. If Windows Update supplies no suitable driver, move to the device manufacturer’s Windows-on-Arm support page.
Run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter for older software
For an older desktop app that has no current update, use Windows 11’s built-in troubleshooter:

- Find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter and select Run.
- Choose the affected program, follow the suggested tests and apply a setting only if it improves the result.
- Launch the app again and test the original workflow, not just whether its window opens.
The troubleshooter can adjust compatibility settings for older applications. It cannot create an Arm64 driver, repair a publisher’s architecture limitation or override a security policy that blocks an unsupported driver. Treat a failed troubleshooter run as useful evidence, not as proof that the laptop itself is defective.

When the app works but a device or feature does not
A driver-dependent failure has a different remedy from an application launch failure. Common examples include printer and PDF workflows, assistive technologies, virtualization, security software, game anti-cheat systems and specialized peripherals.
Ask for the correct driver
Contact the device or software maker and request a Windows 11 Arm64 driver or an explicit Windows-on-Arm compatibility statement for your model. Ask whether the driver is included in Windows, installed through the Microsoft Store, or delivered in a separate Arm64 package. An x64-only driver is not made compatible merely because its companion application can be emulated.
Printer installation
Microsoft says most printers are supported on Windows Arm, including printers that support Mopria, but support still depends on an available built-in Windows driver or a vendor-provided Arm64 driver.
If a manufacturer’s installer reports that it cannot run on ARM, Microsoft’s Surface ARM guidance recommends trying the Windows Settings installation flow instead. That advice is documented for Surface ARM devices; use it as an alternative to the installer, not as a guarantee for every third-party Snapdragon X laptop or every printer feature.
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device and leave the printer powered on and connected to the same network, or connected by USB.
- Choose the detected printer and complete Windows’ setup.
- Print a test page. Then test scanning, status monitoring, duplex controls or finishing options separately, because those features may require additional vendor software.
If Windows can print but the vendor control panel cannot open, the basic printer driver is working and the companion application or its driver is the likely incompatibility.

Use Event Viewer only when symptoms point to a driver: a peripheral disappears, a network or graphics component fails, a game’s anti-cheat service will not start, or a driver-dependent app reports that a system component could not load.
- Open Event Viewer from the Start menu.
- Expand Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > CodeIntegrity > Operational.
- Look at entries created at the time of the failure and record the driver file name, publisher and event ID.
- Interpret event 3076 as an audited driver that would have been blocked under the policy but was allowed in audit mode.
- Interpret event 3077 as a driver blocked under the policy.
Microsoft’s Driver Policy guidance notes that the April 2026 security update changed default trust for expired cross-signed drivers. That can expose an old driver after an otherwise ordinary Windows update. Do not disable driver-signing enforcement, turn off security protections or install an unofficial replacement. Give the event details to the driver’s vendor and obtain a current, properly signed Arm64 driver.
Use the symptom to choose the next branch
The installer refuses to run
- Copy the exact message and check whether the publisher offers an Arm64 installer.
- Confirm that you downloaded the Windows version rather than a macOS, Linux or mobile package.
- Install Windows and Store updates, then retry the current publisher package.
- If the package is old, run Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
- If installation requires a driver or service, stop treating it as a simple app-install problem and request Arm64 support from the publisher.
The app installs but will not launch
- Check whether the app ever worked and whether the failure followed an update.
- Look for a native Arm64 release or a newer emulated build.
- Temporarily disconnect optional peripherals and disable nonessential plug-ins according to the publisher’s instructions. If the app then starts, investigate that component’s driver.
- Check Code Integrity logs only if the symptoms indicate a blocked system component.
The window opens, then crashes, flickers or becomes unresponsive
- Update the app, Windows and device drivers first.
- Test a basic workflow and then each hardware-accelerated or plug-in feature separately.
- Use Program Compatibility Troubleshooter for genuinely older software.
- Report the exact version, Windows build, graphics or peripheral involvement and reproducible steps to the publisher.
The main app works but a game, printer or accessory feature fails
- Classify the failure as driver-dependent rather than assuming emulation is broken.
- Check the hardware maker’s Arm64 documentation and Windows Update for a supported driver.
- For a suspected block, capture the relevant Code Integrity event and event ID.
- Ask the vendor whether the unsupported component has an Arm64 release or whether the feature is unavailable on Windows on Arm.
Compare the realistic compatibility routes

Escalate with a useful support report
After updates, the troubleshooter and driver checks, contact the party that owns the failing layer. Contact the app publisher for the application, plug-in or emulated-code failure; contact the hardware manufacturer for a peripheral or driver; contact Microsoft for a Windows feature or update issue.
Include:
- Product name, edition and exact app version
- Laptop model and whether it is a Snapdragon X Copilot+ PC
- Windows edition and version
- Full error text and when it appears
- Whether the app ever worked and what changed before the failure
- Whether the problem affects the app itself or only a connected device or advanced feature
- Steps that reproduce the failure from a clean restart
- Relevant Code Integrity event details, including 3076 or 3077, when present
Microsoft points users to Feedback Hub for Windows feedback. Microsoft also describes App Assure as a resource for developers working on Arm64 application compatibility; it should not be presented as a guaranteed consumer support channel without confirming eligibility.
A compact decision checklist
- Capture the exact message, versions, device model and failure history.
- Determine whether the app has a native Arm64 build, an emulated x86/x64 build or an unconfirmed architecture.
- Update the Store app or publisher package, then install Windows and driver updates.
- Run Program Compatibility Troubleshooter for older software without a current update.
- Separate application behavior from printer, game, security, accessibility, virtualization or other driver-backed features.
- Use Windows’ printer setup when an installer is not ARM-compatible, while recognizing that advanced features may still need a vendor driver.
- Inspect CodeIntegrity/Operational logs only when a blocked-driver symptom is plausible; use event 3076 and 3077 to guide the vendor conversation.
- Escalate with a complete reproduction report instead of simply saying that the Snapdragon laptop is incompatible.
What a successful diagnosis looks like
The goal is not merely to make an icon appear in the Start menu. A reliable fix identifies which layer failed: the app binary, the Windows version, the emulation path, or a driver and peripheral. Native Arm64 software is the preferred path when available. Emulated applications can be entirely satisfactory when their publisher supports the release, but an unsupported or blocked driver requires a vendor solution rather than another Windows compatibility setting.
