It means Windows encountered a problem in a FAT file system; a blue-screen reference to fastfat.sys does not, by itself, prove that the driver is defective. Possible causes include file-system corruption, bad disk sectors, storage-driver problems, or depleted nonpaged-pool memory. Start with recent changes and Windows’ basic recovery steps, then investigate storage or repair Windows system files according to the evidence.
What the FAT_FILE_SYSTEM blue screen tells you
Microsoft defines bug check 0x00000023 as a problem in the FAT file system. The stop code narrows the area to investigate but does not identify one confirmed cause. Microsoft lists file-system corruption, bad disk sectors, corrupted SCSI or IDE drivers, and depletion of nonpaged-pool memory among possible explanations. Microsoft’s bug-check reference states: “The FAT_FILE_SYSTEM bug check has a value of 0x00000023. This indicates that a problem occurred in the FAT file system.”

If the screen names fastfat.sys, treat that as a diagnostic clue, not proof that the file should be replaced. Do not download a replacement driver or buy replacement hardware based only on the blue-screen label.
Start with the crash pattern and recent changes
Before changing settings, write down the exact stop code and any named module. Note when the crash began and whether it followed a new device, driver, or software installation. Record whether it happens repeatedly under the same conditions. Microsoft notes that unexpected restarts can involve hardware, drivers, or software, so the timing and pattern help determine which checks are relevant. Microsoft’s Windows stop-code troubleshooting guidance recommends starting with basic recovery steps.

Try basic Windows recovery steps
- Disconnect recently added hardware. If the crashes began after connecting a device or installing hardware, shut down and remove the recently added item, then check whether Windows remains stable.
- Use Safe Mode if Windows will not start normally. Safe Mode can help determine whether the problem persists with a limited set of drivers and services. Use Windows Recovery Environment’s startup options to reach it if needed.
- Check Device Manager. Look for devices marked with a warning and investigate the relevant driver, especially if the issue followed a device or driver change. Prefer driver updates from Windows Update or the device manufacturer rather than downloading an isolated system file.
- Install Windows updates and restart. If the error persists, consider System Restore or another suitable Windows recovery option, particularly when the crash began after a recent change.
Microsoft’s general stop-code guidance for Windows 10 and Windows 11 suggests keeping 10%–15% of the drive free. This is a broad troubleshooting recommendation, not a FAT-specific repair threshold; the space needed varies by system configuration.
Check storage and file-system evidence
Prioritize storage investigation if Windows logs show disk or file-system errors, the crashes involve a drive, or the problem began during storage activity. Microsoft recommends checking Event Viewer for SCSI and FASTFAT messages in the System log and Autochk messages in the Application log. It also recommends running hardware diagnostics provided by the computer manufacturer. These checks can help distinguish a file-system or device issue from a general Windows problem.

Run CHKDSK for suspected structural corruption
For suspected structural file-system corruption, Microsoft specifies chkdsk /f /r. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run the command against the affected volume—for example, chkdsk C: /f /r for the C: volume. Replace C: with the correct drive letter. The scan checks for file-system errors and bad sectors and attempts repairs. Scanning the Windows system partition requires a restart before the scan begins.

Allow the scan to finish. If it reports bad sectors or storage errors, preserve important data and use the computer manufacturer’s hardware diagnostics; a CHKDSK result alone is not a reason to replace a drive without further evidence. Microsoft’s FAT_FILE_SYSTEM guidance includes the Event Viewer checks and CHKDSK recommendation.

Repair Windows system files with DISM and SFC
If system-file corruption is a possibility, Microsoft’s built-in sequence is to install current Windows updates, restart, then run DISM followed by System File Checker. These tools target Windows system files; they do not establish or repair failing physical storage by themselves.
- Install available Windows updates and restart the computer.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for the operation to report success. - Run
sfc /scannowand let the scan complete. - Restart Windows and check whether the blue screen recurs.
See Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions for the DISM and SFC procedure.

Escalate recurring crashes with dump analysis
If the crash continues after relevant basic and storage checks, a memory dump can provide more specific evidence about what failed. Microsoft’s advanced troubleshooting guidance describes configuring memory dumps, opening them in WinDbg, and running !analyze -v. Interpreting the output can be difficult without experience with Windows internals, so consider help from a qualified technician if you cannot confidently identify the cause. Microsoft’s crash-dump troubleshooting guide explains the analysis process.

It is an advanced diagnostic option, not a casual way to test a suspected driver.
