A Steam Frame standalone compatibility rating applies to local play, not PC streaming, so the two modes need different checks. For a local game, start with its compatibility status; for a streamed game, check the host PC, SteamVR and connection path.
First identify where the game is running
Steam Frame supports standalone play, but Valve says it is primarily designed for high-quality PC game streaming. In standalone mode, the game runs on the headset. In streaming mode, it runs on a host PC and its image is sent to the headset. Valve’s Steam Frame Standalone Compatibility Review Process covers local games only; its badge is not a verdict on a streamed session.

- Standalone: Check the game’s Steam Frame compatibility rating, then investigate local compatibility or performance.
- PC streaming: Confirm that the game and SteamVR work on the host PC before treating the issue as a headset compatibility problem. If the image or connection fails, investigate the streaming path.
If a standalone game will not launch
Find the game’s Steam Frame compatibility status in the Steam library or store. Valve’s categories describe the results of its review, not a guarantee that every user will have the same experience.

Valve describes Proton as the compatibility layer that runs Windows games on Steam Frame’s Linux-based operating system and says the work is ongoing. The rating is therefore a useful starting point, but do not assume a particular compatibility-tool version or workaround will fix a specific title.

If SteamVR or a PC-streamed game is not working
For general SteamVR problems on the PC, Valve recommends this sequence in its SteamVR Troubleshooting index. These steps apply to the SteamVR troubleshooting context, not to every standalone Steam Frame failure.
- Verify SteamVR files: In the Steam client, open SteamVR’s properties and use Verify Integrity of Tool Files.
- Check graphics drivers: Check the host PC’s graphics driver version and update if necessary.
- Restart SteamVR: Close and reopen SteamVR, then test the game again.
- Rerun Room Setup: Open the SteamVR status window and run Room Setup again.
- Restart Windows: Restart the host PC and retest. If the problem remains, follow the issue-specific links on Valve’s troubleshooting page.
If the headset shows the desktop instead of the VR display
Valve documents a specific case: if the headset shows the desktop after SteamVR closes, Direct Mode is not enabled. Open SteamVR settings, select Developer, and enable Direct Mode, following Valve’s Direct Mode troubleshooting instructions.

This is a targeted fix for that PC SteamVR display symptom—not a general remedy for every black screen, blank panel, or Steam Frame display issue.

Separate a launch failure from a title that runs but has poor image quality or uneven performance. For SteamVR titles, Valve’s Performance Assessment overlay can show whether frame-time performance is meeting the tool’s criteria.

- Open the SteamVR Dashboard and show Advanced Settings.
- Open the Developer tab and enable Draw Performance Assessment in Headset.
- Run the VR title and inspect the overlay for the application identity, status, average frame time, and target frame time.
Valve’s Performance Assessment Overlay documentation defines average frame time as a rolling window of the last 32 frames. The target is based on the minimum required display refresh rate and includes SteamVR headroom. Status can be VERIFIED, PLAYABLE, UNSUPPORTED, or temporarily PENDING while the tool collects data.
Read an unsupported performance result carefully
Repeated frame-time excursions can cause an unsupported result; Valve says one isolated frame over the threshold is filtered. The perfcriteria.txt file in the SteamVR logs folder records application details and frame times leading up to a threshold violation. Low resolution can also trigger an unsupported result, so the status does not necessarily mean that stutter is the only issue.

If a one-off event such as a slow loading screen affected the result, use Clear Performance Assessment Status on the SteamVR Now Playing screen to resume evaluation. The overlay is a diagnostic for performance criteria; it does not establish that every visible defect is caused by frame rate.

For standalone Verified performance criteria, Valve specifies a minimum of 72 fps at 1728×1728 during normal play. Valve also says VR games below 1440×1440 appear Unsupported. These are compatibility criteria, not measured failure rates or a guarantee about how a particular user’s session will look.

If the problem is PC streaming
Once you have confirmed that the game runs on a PC and streams to the headset, check the host-PC and network path separately from standalone compatibility. Valve lists a broadband internet connection among the minimum requirements for SteamVR, but its cited information does not specify a required router model, Wi-Fi standard, bitrate, or wireless setting.
Consider the network only if the fault is actually in wireless streaming—for example, the PC game runs but its streamed image is unstable. Changing or buying a router is not a supported fix for a standalone launch failure or local rendering problem.
