Show AI skill with evidence, not just a tool name. A strong résumé entry identifies the task, what you did with AI, how you checked or changed its output, and the real deliverable or outcome. You can draw that evidence from paid work, coursework, volunteering, or an independent project; you do not need an AI job to describe relevant experience.

What AI skills should you put on your résumé?

Name a tool or method only if you have actually used it and can explain how. Depending on your experience and the job, that might mean a specific generative AI tool, AI-assisted research, drafting, summarization, or organizing information. Avoid broad labels such as “AI expert” if your evidence is limited to occasional use of a chatbot.

Use a skills section for concise, accurate terms, then show what they mean in an experience, project, volunteer, or coursework bullet. The UC Davis Career Center’s skills guidance notes that relevant abilities can come from part-time work, volunteering, and student projects, not just formal employment.

How to write an AI résumé bullet that proves what you can do

A useful framework is action + task + AI tool or method + human review or verification + actual result or deliverable. Treat it as a checklist, not a requirement to squeeze every part into every bullet. Keep the detail that makes your contribution clear and leave out anything you cannot substantiate.

  • Action and task: What were you trying to accomplish?
  • Your use of AI: Which tool or method did you use, and for what part of the task?
  • Your judgment: What did you check, correct, edit, or decide yourself?
  • Deliverable or outcome: What real document, analysis, presentation, or other result came from the work?

These examples are templates, not claims about real candidates. Replace every bracket with verifiable details:

  • “Used [AI tool] to organize [real source material] into a first-pass [deliverable]; checked [specific facts or criteria] and edited the final version for [audience or purpose].”
  • “Built a [course / volunteer / personal] project using [AI tool or method] to [task]; reviewed outputs against [criteria] and delivered [actual artifact].”
  • “Compared [actual résumé] with [target job description], identified [supported skill gap], and revised [specific section] to reflect documented experience.”

Do not add percentages, time savings, quality improvements, or volumes unless you measured them and can explain how. The Wesleyan Gordon Career Center warns that AI may add numbers or accomplishments that are not true. If you did not measure an outcome, describe the deliverable instead.

How to show AI experience without an AI job

Use the strongest relevant example you can explain, whether it comes from paid work, an independent project, coursework, or volunteering. Choose an example that connects to the target role, makes your personal contribution visible, and has a deliverable you can discuss or verify. Consider confidentiality too: do not reveal sensitive details simply to make a bullet sound more impressive.

Label the context accurately. For example, call work an “Independent project,” “Course project,” or “Volunteer project” when that is what it was. Practice with a consumer chatbot can demonstrate a task-specific skill, but it does not by itself establish professional deployment, model development, or production experience. The University of Michigan Career Center’s résumé resources include project descriptions as a way to connect an action with its purpose.

How to tailor AI skills to a job description

Match your wording to the target role, but use a job-description term only when your own experience supports it. A keyword is not evidence by itself, and keyword matching does not guarantee that an application will pass screening or lead to an interview.

  1. Compare the job description with your résumé and identify relevant skills or terms that genuinely overlap.
  2. If you use an AI assistant to review the match, provide only the relevant résumé material and job-description text. Ask it to identify supported overlaps and possible gaps, and to quote the résumé bullet supporting each suggestion.
  3. Check every suggestion against your actual experience. Remove unsupported additions and rewrite useful wording in your own voice.
  4. Follow the rules of your employer or institution. Do not enter confidential, personal, or restricted information into a tool unless you are permitted to do so; privacy practices vary by provider.

The UC Davis Career Center discusses using AI to review skills and keywords; Meta describes comparing résumé content with a job listing; and the University of Illinois advises personalizing AI-assisted language and cautions against misrepresentation or skill gaps. Use that kind of comparison as a review aid, not as permission to claim a skill you do not have.

How to use AI to improve your résumé without misrepresenting yourself

AI can help review or edit application materials, but you remain responsible for every factual claim. Microsoft’s Word résumé guidance recommends providing real career examples and not changing factual details such as dates, job titles, responsibilities, or achievements. Brown University Career Center likewise warns that generative AI can produce false or unrelated information and recommends using real examples from your background.

Before submitting, ask yourself the UC Davis Career Center’s question: “Am I using AI to improve my work rather than do the work for me?” Then check that every tool, task, skill, and result in the résumé is something you can explain in an interview.
