If Spectrum internet feels slow, first check for a local outage, then compare the problem across devices and test a computer over Ethernet if possible. That sequence helps distinguish a service or equipment issue from weak WiFi or a single device problem—before you spend money on new hardware.
Is Spectrum having an outage?
Check Spectrum’s outage status before changing settings or equipment. Spectrum recommends checking whether an outage affects your area first; availability of outage information is address-dependent. Use the My Spectrum app or account, or Spectrum’s internet troubleshooting support. If an outage is reported, a new router, cable, or WiFi Pod will not resolve the provider-side interruption.

Is the problem one device, or your whole connection?
Try more than one device, and compare performance in different rooms or at different distances from the router. If only one device is affected, check that device’s software, background applications, and connection before changing the home network. If several devices are slow, look at the shared connection, router, modem, and outage status.

Spectrum Community moderator James_M identified router location, the number of people using the connection at once, device hardware and software, and background applications as factors that can affect performance. The post was first published in February 2021 and edited in November 2021, so treat it as general diagnostic guidance rather than a guarantee for a particular app or service tier. - DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
How can you tell whether the issue is WiFi or the internet connection?
Compare a WiFi result with a wired test from a computer connected to the modem using a Cat 5e or higher Ethernet cable, as recommended in Spectrum Community guidance. Check that the computer and modem have compatible Ethernet ports. The cable helps diagnose the connection; it does not promise to increase speed.
| What you observe | What it suggests | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Wired is better than WiFi | The internet path may be working better than the wireless connection. | Check router placement, distance, and local WiFi conditions. |
| Wired and WiFi are both slow | The problem may extend beyond WiFi coverage. | Check for an outage, inspect equipment and connections, then contact Spectrum if the wired problem persists. |
| Only one device is slow | That device or its applications may be contributing. | Close unnecessary background programs, update its software, and restart the device. |
| Several devices are slow | A shared network or service issue is more plausible, though not certain. | Check outage status, shared equipment, and the wired result. |
Check devices, cables, and connections
- Close unnecessary programs or downloads that may be using the connection.
- Make sure the affected device’s browser and software are current, then restart the device.
- Inspect coax connections for loose fittings and check cables and splitters for visible damage.
- If one device remains slow, consider device-specific causes such as background file sharing, security problems, firewall settings, or limited device resources. These are possibilities, not proof of a particular fault.
Spectrum Community lists malware and adware among possible contributors to poor performance; a security check may help identify a device issue, but it is not a guaranteed speed fix. Spectrum Community’s troubleshooting post also describes device and background-application factors.

Restart your modem and router safely
Use the instructions for your equipment where available. Spectrum’s outage troubleshooting procedure gives a separate-modem-and-router sequence: disconnect power, wait 30 seconds, reconnect the modem and allow about two minutes for it to reconnect, then power the router and let it reconnect. A combined modem/router gateway skips the separate-router step. Spectrum’s general equipment instructions give a different minimum wait—at least 60 seconds—so follow the applicable equipment guidance rather than treating the timings as interchangeable.
- For separate equipment, unplug the modem and router from power.
- Wait the interval specified by the applicable Spectrum instructions.
- Reconnect the modem first and wait for it to establish its connection.
- Reconnect the router and allow it to come back online before testing again.
See Spectrum’s modem and router reboot instructions and Spectrum equipment support. Spectrum says not to manually troubleshoot fiber equipment; use the instructions for that equipment or contact Spectrum support instead.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
If WiFi is the likely problem, improve router placement
Before considering added coverage hardware, try moving the router to a more suitable location. Spectrum’s WiFi 6E router guide recommends a central position, a raised surface, and an open space. Avoid hiding it in a closet or media center, placing it behind a TV, or setting it near devices that emit radio signals. Test closer to the router as well: the guide notes that signal weakens with distance. Spectrum WiFi 6E Router User Guide, version 12 (2023).
Only consider a Spectrum WiFi Pod after the evidence points to a localized coverage problem and you have checked placement. The guide describes adding or removing up to five Pods per router, but that does not establish compatibility with every Spectrum setup; verify compatibility with Spectrum before buying or adding one. Avoid a factory reset as a routine speed fix: Spectrum’s guide says a long press of more than 15 seconds performs a factory reset and removes personalized configuration.

When to contact Spectrum
If multiple devices remain slow on a wired connection after checking for an outage, inspecting connections, and restarting supported equipment, contact Spectrum with information that can help narrow the issue:
- Your ZIP code and subscribed speed
- The equipment you use and how it is connected
- A recent wired speed-test result, including which device and connection you used
- Any relevant modem logs, if available
If you post details in Spectrum Community, redact private MAC and IP addresses. A WiFi-only speed result does not by itself establish that Spectrum’s service is slow; the wired comparison is useful context for support.
