To troubleshoot coax internet, first compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection, then check the modem and coax connections. If wired service is still slow or keeps dropping, collect the modem’s status and signal details and ask your internet provider to check the line and service configuration. A slow Wi-Fi test alone does not show that the coax connection is at fault.
Start by describing the problem
Before changing equipment or wiring, note what happens and when. This makes it easier to distinguish a wireless issue from a fault affecting the cable service.

- Is the connection slow, disconnecting, or both?
- Does the problem affect one device or several?
- Does it happen continuously or at particular times of day?
- When it occurs, what do a wired speed test and a Wi-Fi test show?
Compare test results with your subscribed plan, but treat a single result cautiously: the device, test server, and wider internet conditions can all affect a measurement. Cisco’s provider-oriented troubleshooting guide distinguishes cable-network performance from performance across the broader internet: Cisco cable-modem troubleshooting.
Separate Wi-Fi trouble from a coax or service fault
Run a test on Wi-Fi, then connect a computer to the router with Ethernet and test again. If your equipment and provider setup allow it, a direct connection to the modem can help isolate the router as well. Follow the modem and router instructions for the correct connection and setup.

- 🔌 CABLE INTERNET REQUIRED: Works EXCLUSIVELY with cable internet service (DOCSIS) from providers like Xfinity, Spectrum, or Cox. Will NOT work with fiber (Verizon FiOS, AT&T), DSL, satellite, or fixed wireless internet. Contact your ISP to confirm compatibility BEFORE purchasing.
- 🚀 MULTI-GIG PERFORMANCE: Supports internet plans up to 2.5 Gbps with 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port. Designed for plans 1 Gbps and faster from certified providers: Xfinity (up to 2.33 Gbps), Spectrum (1 Gbps), Cox (2 Gbps). Verify your plan speed and provider compatibility.
- 💡 SETUP REQUIREMENTS: You need: (1) Cable internet service, (2) Separate WiFi router with 2.5 Gbps port for full speeds, (3) ISP activation. This modem cannot create WiFi networks or connect multiple devices without additional equipment.
| What you observe | Where to investigate | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi is slow, but a wired test is good | Wi-Fi, router, or the wireless device | Check router placement, nearby interference, and wireless settings. Don’t change coax wiring based on a Wi-Fi-only result. TP-Link’s slow-internet troubleshooting |
| Both Wi-Fi and wired tests are slow | Modem, service activation or provisioning, coax signal, congestion, or the provider’s network | Check modem status and connections; contact the provider if the problem persists. ARRIS support; Cisco cable-modem troubleshooting |
| Connection drops, especially alongside signal or error warnings | Coax/RF path or provider network | Record when drops occur and the modem’s available diagnostics, then request a provider line and signal check. NETGEAR support; Cisco cable-modem troubleshooting |
| Slowdowns occur mainly at busy times | Shared access or network congestion is one possibility; other causes remain possible | Log the times and ask the provider to investigate. Replacing a local cable is not a general remedy for congestion. Cisco cable-modem troubleshooting |
Manufacturer guidance also recommends wired or direct testing to narrow down which connection segment is responsible: TP-Link troubleshooting and ARRIS support.
Check modem status and physical connections
Look at the modem’s status lights and, if available, its administration page. Check that coax connectors are secure at the wall and modem, and that Ethernet connections between the modem, router, and test computer are seated properly. Make sure equipment has room for ventilation.

- Multi‑Gig speed for today & tomorrow: DOCSIS 3.1 performance supports cable internet plans up to 2 Gbps, delivering ultra‑fast streaming, gaming, and downloads.
- Save on rental fees: Own your modem and avoid monthly equipment charges—check with your cable provider for plan compatibility.
- Compact, modern design: Space‑saving footprint with discrete LED indicators for power, upstream/downstream, and online status.
- Easy setup: Connect cable, power on, and activate with your cable provider. Then connect a Wi‑Fi router to the Ethernet port for home Wi-Fi coverage.
- Modem only: This cable modem requires a separate Wi-Fi router or mesh system for home Wi-Fi network.
Modem interfaces and indicator meanings vary by model. Use the documentation for your equipment to interpret them; don’t factory-reset the modem unless it is necessary and you understand that a reset may erase configuration settings.
Inspect the in-home coax path
An unnecessary splitter in the in-home coax run can affect signal quality. You may remove one only if it is genuinely unnecessary, belongs to your in-home setup, and doing so will not interrupt other services or shared/provider wiring. If you are unsure, leave it in place and ask the provider to inspect the line.

- 16 downstream and 4 upstream channels. Best for cable internet service plans up to 400 Mbps.
A replacement RG6 coax lead is worth considering only if the existing in-home lead is damaged or has been identified as a cause. Buying a new cable is not a general fix for slow service. NETGEAR and ARRIS provide manufacturer guidance on checking coax connections and splitters: NETGEAR support and ARRIS support.
Interpret modem signal readings cautiously
Depending on the modem, its status page may show downstream power, downstream signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), upstream power, or error information. Readings outside the acceptable range for that particular modem and provider—or close to the device’s limits—can accompany slow speeds and disconnects.

- MAXIMIZE YOUR CABLE INTERNET AND WHOLE-HOME WIFI: A cable modem and WiFi router in one device unlocks the full potential of your home internet with faster downloads, smoother WiFi for gaming and video calls, and reliable coverage in every room.
- APPROVED FOR YOUR PROVIDER AND PLAN: Works with Xfinity internet plans up to 800Mbps, Spectrum up to 1Gbps, and Cox up to 1Gbps. Not compatible with Verizon, AT&T, CenturyLink, DirecTV, DISH, or bundled voice plans. ISP activation required after setup.
- MULTI-GIG DOCSIS 3.1 SPEEDS: Get Gigabit+ cable download speeds on today's fastest plans, with headroom for the upgrades ahead. Real-world speeds depend on your plan and ISP network.
- WIFI 6 COVERAGE FOR THE WHOLE HOME: Stay connected in every room with dual-band AX2700 WiFi 6 covering up to 2,000 sq ft and capacity for 25+ connected devices. Real-world coverage depends on home size, layout, and building materials.
- WIRED CONNECTIONS FOR YOUR FASTEST DEVICES: Four Gigabit Ethernet ports keep gaming consoles, desktops, and streaming devices hardwired for the lowest latency and the most stable connection in your home.
There is no single threshold that applies to every modem and provider. Consult the modem’s manual and ask the provider to interpret the readings rather than treating a number found for another model as a universal pass/fail test. The manufacturer support information and your modem’s documentation can help identify what its status page displays.
When and how to contact your provider
Contact the provider when wired performance remains poor, drops continue, or the modem reports signal or error warnings. Cable-service problems can involve customer equipment, DOCSIS configuration, noise on the coax plant, upstream or downstream congestion, or the provider’s backhaul and wider network; symptoms alone may not identify which one applies. Cisco’s troubleshooting guide outlines these categories.

- Get speeds up to 686 Mbps download and 131 Mbps upload (speeds based on your Cable Internet service provider). Compatible with most U.S. cable providers.
- Features DOCSIS 3.0 technology to bond up to 16 downstream channels and 4 upstream channels.
- Supports IPv4 and IPv6 Internet standard.
- Requires Cable Internet Service. If you are unsure of your service, please contact your CABLE provider to confirm.
Give support concrete details so they can investigate the right part of the connection:
- When the slowdown or disconnection occurs and how often
- Whether one or multiple devices are affected
- Results from Wi-Fi and wired tests, including how each device was connected
- Your modem model and the status lights you observed
- Any signal readings or error information available on the modem’s status page
Ask the provider to verify activation and provisioning, check the line signal, and look for network-side noise, errors, or congestion. If the fault persists after the basic checks, repeated equipment changes are less useful than having the provider assess the service and coax line. NETGEAR support; ARRIS support.
