On your Apple Watch, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health, then scroll to Maximum Capacity. That percentage compares the battery’s capacity with its capacity when new; it is not the percentage of charge remaining right now.
Find Maximum Capacity on Apple Watch
- Open Settings on the watch.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap Battery Health.
- Scroll down to Maximum Capacity.
Apple documents this path in its Apple Watch User Guide. The Battery screen is also where you can see remaining charge, a graph of recent charge history and when the watch was last charged. Battery Health contains the Maximum Capacity reading.

What the Maximum Capacity percentage means
Maximum Capacity is an estimate of how much charge the battery can hold relative to when it was new. Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries chemically age, so their capacity diminishes over time. A new watch may show slightly less than 100% depending on the time between manufacture and activation, according to Apple’s Apple Watch Battery and Performance guidance.

Think of current charge as “how full is it now?” and Maximum Capacity as “how much capacity does it have compared with when new?”

Why Maximum Capacity may change after an update
Apple says some models recalibrate their battery-capacity reporting after certain watchOS updates so that the estimate is more accurate. A changed reading after an update does not, by itself, show that the battery physically recovered or degraded overnight.

If battery life seems worse after updating
Some tasks related to a watchOS update continue in the background and can temporarily affect battery life. Apple advises waiting a few days, then checking again. See Apple’s guidance for an Apple Watch battery that drains too quickly.

When to contact Apple Support
If Battery Health displays Battery Needs Service, or you believe the battery needs replacement, contact Apple Support. Apple’s guidance points to the service message and Support; it does not set one universal Maximum Capacity percentage at which every Apple Watch battery must be replaced. Service options can vary by location, so consult Apple Support for your region.
