If the skeleton remains after the page should have settled, the app or the request supplying its content may be failing. The image alone cannot tell you which: compare what happens in a normal browser session, then check the expected content and its network requests before changing capture timing.
First determine whether the screenshot was early or the page is stuck
Screenshot tools capture a visual state; they do not certify that an application is ready. Cypress puts it plainly: “Snapshot commands capture whatever is on screen at that moment.” If rendering, animation, or data loading is still in progress, the capture can show an intermediate screen and produce a misleading visual failure (Cypress visual testing documentation).

| What you observe | What it suggests | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| The skeleton eventually becomes the expected content in a normal session. | The screenshot may have been taken before asynchronous rendering or data loading completed. | Wait for a page-specific content condition before capturing. |
| The skeleton remains in a normal session too. | The page may not be receiving or displaying the data it needs. | Inspect the relevant request, response, and browser console. |
| The page works normally but fails only in automation. | The runner, test state, or automation environment may differ from the regular session. | Compare account state, test data, viewport, browser, and console output. |
These are diagnostic branches, not a root-cause verdict. Without the affected URL, browser, capture tool, and network or console evidence, the precise cause cannot be established.
Wait for the content the screenshot is meant to show
A page’s navigation event is not the same as its data-driven interface being ready. Cypress documents that cy.visit() waits for the page’s load event, but does not automatically wait for every XHR or Ajax request. Playwright lists several navigation conditions, including load and networkidle; its Page API discourages using networkidle as a test-readiness condition and recommends assertions instead (Cypress FAQ; Playwright Page API).

Choose a condition that represents the result a person needs to see: a page heading, a populated table row, a product title, or the actual content container. Waiting for a generic shell, a fixed pause, or a quiet network can finish while the important element is still absent.
Cypress: wait for the relevant request, then assert content
Intercept the specific route that supplies the missing content and wait for it when appropriate. Then assert that the expected result is visible before taking a snapshot. Use the route your application depends on rather than attempting to wait for every request.
cy.intercept('GET', '/api/products').as('products');
cy.visit('/products');
cy.wait('@products');
cy.get('[data-cy="product-row"]').should('be.visible');
// Take the visual snapshot only after the content assertion.
Replace the example route and selector with the ones used by your app. A successful response alone is not enough if the page does not render the expected content; keep the assertion on the user-visible result.

Playwright: use a locator assertion
Use a locator that targets the content to be captured and wait for its expected state. Playwright’s web-first assertions retry while checking the condition, unlike an arbitrary sleep that always waits the same duration.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('captures the loaded product list', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/products');
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Products' })).toBeVisible();
await expect(page.locator('[data-testid="product-row"]').first()).toBeVisible();
await page.screenshot({ path: 'products.png', fullPage: true });
});
Substitute the real URL and app-specific locator. The first assertion establishes the heading; the second checks that actual list content is present before capture.
Check requests and errors when the skeleton never clears
- Reproduce the same state. Use the same URL, browser, viewport, account, and test data as the failing capture. In an ordinary session, note whether the skeleton eventually changes.
- Inspect the request that should provide the content. In the browser’s network panel, check whether it fired, whether it succeeded, and whether its response contains the expected data. Cypress recommends identifying relevant routes rather than assuming all asynchronous requests are complete.
- Read the response and console together. A successful status does not establish that the payload is usable or that the app rendered it. Check for browser console errors and verify authentication, permissions, and environment differences.
- Keep the content assertion in the test. If it times out, diagnose the failed condition and its request instead of increasing the screenshot timeout without evidence.
Check lazy loading and visibility-triggered content
Some pages defer non-critical or non-visible content until it approaches the viewport. Google describes this behavior as lazy loading and notes that an incorrect implementation can hide content from Google Search (Google Search Central: Lazy loading). That is a reason to check whether the target content depends on visibility or scrolling—not proof that lazy loading caused a particular screenshot.

If the missing content is below the fold or appears after a normal interaction, reproduce that action before asserting it. For example, scroll the relevant section into view, click the tab that loads its panel, or expand the collapsed area, then wait for the expected content to appear. A full-page screenshot does not necessarily trigger every application-level behavior that a user scrolling through the page would trigger.
Investigate hydration only when the evidence points there
If an SSR React page works in a regular browser but fails under Cypress, check the console for hydration mismatch errors. Cypress documents a specific case where its injected bootstrap script changes the DOM before React hydrates an SSR page, and describes a data-cy-bootstrap marker workaround for that mechanism (Cypress troubleshooting documentation).
This is a targeted lead, not a general fix for skeleton screens. Use it only if the app is SSR React, the failure is specific to Cypress, and the related hydration error is present; otherwise continue investigating the content request and readiness condition.

Make visual captures reproducible after content is correct
Once the expected content appears, stabilize the inputs to the capture so that remaining differences are meaningful:
- Use controlled fixtures or stable test data where practical; Cypress recommends consistent rendering conditions for visual testing.
- Keep the viewport and browser environment consistent between runs.
- Account for animation and time-dependent content if either changes the captured state.
- Assert the expected content before taking the screenshot. A visually stable image of the wrong intermediate state is still the wrong result.
Playwright’s visual comparison guidance takes screenshots until two consecutive captures match and saves the last one (Playwright visual comparisons). That can stabilize the comparison process, but matching captures do not by themselves prove the intended page content loaded. Keep the app-specific readiness assertion.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a screenshot showing a skeleton prove the website is broken?
No. It may show a valid intermediate loading state, or it may reflect content that never loaded. The screenshot alone does not distinguish those cases.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I use network idle to decide when to capture?
Not as a general test-readiness signal. Playwright discourages it for tests; assert the page-specific content you expect instead.
Can a full-page screenshot trigger lazy-loaded content?
Do not assume it will. If content depends on scrolling or interaction, reproduce that behavior and verify the content before capture.
