How to Troubleshoot ReSkate Connection and Launch Problems on Steam Deck

Work through ReSkate launch failures, supported-build mismatches, general connection checks, and the limited Linux/Proton lobby-hosting report on Steam Deck.

If ReSkate will not launch or you cannot host a lobby on Steam Deck, first identify which part is failing: the launcher, the game build, SteamOS/Proton, your general internet connection, or ReSkate multiplayer. Update and restart the Deck, confirm ReSkate is using a supported skate. build, then test network connectivity. A specific Linux/Proton lobby-hosting failure has been reported, but it is an open issue from one setup—not proof that all Steam Deck users are affected.

Identify what is failing before changing settings

Separate a launch problem from a connection problem. Note whether the ReSkate launcher itself fails, the game fails after you press PLAY, or the game starts but a multiplayer action does not work. For multiplayer, distinguish signing into or connecting to Steam from ReSkate’s own lobby actions—and distinguish hosting from joining.

Keep these details handy if you need help: Steam Deck LCD or OLED, SteamOS version, selected Proton version, ReSkate version, game build, exact error text, and whether joining works when hosting does not. These are useful troubleshooting details, not stated mandatory fields for project support.

Apply Steam Deck and Proton checks

  1. Install any available SteamOS updates, restart the Deck, and retest. Valve recommends updates and a restart among the first steps for Steam Deck software instability.
  2. Exit or disable third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode, then try again. Valve includes this as a general troubleshooting check.
  3. If ReSkate is added to Steam as a non-Steam game, open its Steam entry’s Properties > Compatibility and, where appropriate, try the latest Proton compatibility tool available on your Deck. Menu labels can change. This is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed ReSkate fix.
  4. Check the Steam Deck compatibility rating for the relevant Steam app. Valve’s labels mean: Verified works well out of the box; Playable may need user adjustments; Unsupported is currently not functional on Deck; and Unknown has not been checked. The rating evaluates areas such as input, display, seamlessness, and system support. Do not assume ReSkate has a particular rating without checking its current listing. Check ReSkate’s installation and supported game build

ReSkate is a fan project, not affiliated with or endorsed by Electronic Arts or Full Circle. Its project README says you need your own Steam copy of skate. Use the current official release and follow its installation instructions: extract ReSkateLauncher.exe and ReSkate.dll beside Skate.exe, or into an empty folder where the launcher can install the game. Run the launcher and press PLAY. See the official ReSkate repository.

The launcher checks ReSkate updates and the game files against a particular supported Steam build. The README currently names build 25414733; this value can change. If Steam has updated skate. beyond the build ReSkate supports, that mismatch is distinct from a Wi-Fi problem or faulty Deck hardware. The launcher may request a Steam sign-in and download needed files when the game is missing or past the supported build. Check the repository’s current README or release notes rather than treating that build number as permanent.

The README places the ReSkate log at logs/ReSkate.log beside Skate.exe. Preserve relevant log details for a support report. That documented Windows-style path does not establish the exact location as seen through SteamOS/Proton, so do not assume a Linux path from it.

Test general network connectivity separately

These checks help isolate a general connection problem; they are not established fixes for a ReSkate code issue or Proton multiplayer limitation.

  • Check Steam service status. A Steam service interruption can look like a local connection failure. Consult Steam Status.
  • Consider local interference. Wireless interference or problems with a powerline connection may affect connectivity. An internet speed test can help you assess the local link.
  • Isolate Wi-Fi with a wired test. A direct Ethernet connection can help determine whether the wireless link is the problem. Steam Deck requires additional USB-C-to-Ethernet hardware for this test. Wired networking is a diagnostic option, not a documented ReSkate hosting fix.

If you can join but cannot host a lobby

An issue opened on October 4, 2026 in the ReSkate project tracker is titled “Cannot host lobby on Linux/Proton – ‘Multiplayer is off’ persists.” Its author reports that the game showed “Multiplayer is off” under “Host lobby” and did nothing when clicked. The reported setup was Linux Mint, native Linux Steam, Proton Experimental, ReSkate launched as a non-Steam game through Proton, and ReSkate versions 1.0.6/1.0.7. The author said joining lobbies worked while hosting did not, attributed the problem to Steam P2P listen-socket creation failing on Proton, and reported no workaround at that time.

This is one user’s open issue report and diagnosis, not a confirmed project-wide explanation or evidence that every Steam Deck configuration is affected. Check the issue’s current status and comments at the ReSkate issue tracker. If your setup and symptoms match, include your versions, exact error, and relevant log details when reporting it through the project’s official channels. Repeated router changes or a USB-C Ethernet adapter are not established solutions to this reported hosting failure.

The ReSkate README says launcher or game crashes upload a minidump and session log to the project’s Backtrace account. It also documents how to disable reporting: use Settings (ADVANCED) in the launcher or set RESKATE_CRASH_REPORTING=0. Consult the current README for details.
