If Houdini opens but Modeler is missing or fails, first separate a Modeler loading problem from a Houdini installation, licensing, or system-requirements problem. The available public information does not establish a current Modeler installation method or compatibility matrix, so confirm the exact Modeler and Houdini versions with Modeler’s developer rather than assuming a particular build is supported.
First identify which application is failing
There are two different starting points: Houdini itself may fail to launch, or Houdini may work while Modeler does not appear or fails when you invoke it. Diagnose the host application first; reinstalling Houdini is not a sensible first response when Houdini already runs and only Modeler is affected.

- Houdini will not launch: investigate Houdini’s installation, system requirements, and licensing independently of Modeler. SideFX distinguishes installing Houdini software from installing licenses in its general troubleshooting FAQ.
- Houdini launches, but Modeler does not: check the Modeler installation route and ask its developer whether your exact Houdini build is supported. The historical release announcement does not provide a current compatibility guarantee.
Record the exact versions and environment
Before changing files or reinstalling anything, collect the details that determine which documentation and support advice applies:

- Operating system version and architecture.
- How and where Modeler was installed.
- The exact error message, if any, and when the problem began.
- Whether Houdini starts and whether other tools load successfully.
Version information matters: SideFX’s support policy and system requirements refer to Houdini releases, while an official current Modeler compatibility matrix has not been established by the available public sources.

Check Houdini’s requirements for your installed release
Use the SideFX system-requirements page that matches your exact Houdini release. Requirements are release-specific; do not use a page for another version as proof that your installation is supported.
- Houdini 20.5 requirements list Windows 10/11, macOS 11 or later on 64-bit Intel or Apple Silicon, and named 64-bit Linux distributions. The page also says CentOS 7/RHEL 7 users need the Houdini 20.5 gcc9 build rather than the default gcc11 build.
- Houdini 20.0 requirements provide that release’s own operating-system, graphics, and Linux package notes, including a gcc9 build caveat for older distributions.
These are host-Houdini requirements, not evidence that Modeler supports every listed platform or build. SideFX says it “officially provide[s] support for the latest version of Houdini and the two versions preceding it” in its troubleshooting FAQ. That describes SideFX’s Houdini support policy; it does not promise that Modeler works with those versions.

Use a cautious host-level preferences check
If Houdini exhibits broader environment problems, SideFX’s FAQ suggests renaming the version-specific Houdini preferences folder so Houdini can regenerate defaults. This is general Houdini troubleshooting, not a documented Modeler repair.

- Locate the preferences folder associated with the affected Houdini version, using SideFX’s guidance for your platform.
- Make a backup, then rename the folder instead of deleting it.
- Start Houdini and check whether the host-level problem remains.
Regenerating preferences resets user settings to defaults. If this does not resolve the issue, restore the backup or move the renamed folder back. A clean preferences folder can help isolate a Houdini environment problem, but it does not establish that Modeler is compatible or repair its installation.

Confirm Modeler compatibility and installation with its developer
Modeler 1.0 was announced in a SideFX forum post dated January 13, 2020. That announcement is historical: it does not establish the current Modeler version, current installation instructions, current sales or support channel, or compatible Houdini builds. Do not infer present-day compatibility from the announcement or from SideFX’s general Houdini support policy.
If Houdini starts but Modeler is absent or fails, ask Modeler’s developer to confirm the correct installation procedure and whether your specific Houdini version/build and operating system are supported. Use a current developer support channel only after verifying that it is current; the 2020 post alone is not proof of one.

Prepare a useful troubleshooting report
Send the developer a concise report with the information below. Include relevant Houdini startup output or logs when available, and distinguish clearly between a host failure and a Modeler-only failure.
