OpenAI says ads are visually distinct from answers. The placement is the key clue: it does not, by itself, mean the answer was written or ranked by an advertiser—or that ChatGPT endorses the advertised product.
How to recognize an ad in ChatGPT
Check the label and placement
OpenAI describes ads as clearly labeled as sponsored and visually separated from ChatGPT’s response. They may appear below a response rather than as part of its text. An advertiser-facing overview describes an ad unit as potentially containing the advertiser’s name, favicon, title, copy, landing page and image.
If a product or service is mentioned in ChatGPT’s answer, do not assume it is an ad just because a related sponsored unit appears nearby. Look for the explicit label and the separate unit. OpenAI says ads do not influence answers; it describes ads as running on systems separate from the chat model, and says advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter responses.
A sponsored placement is not an endorsement
OpenAI’s Help Center states: “Ads are paid placements, and seeing an ad doesn’t mean OpenAI endorses or recommends the advertiser or its products or services.” Treat a labeled unit as paid advertising, not as a ChatGPT recommendation.
Why an ad may match your conversation
A relevant ad does not prove that an advertiser influenced the answer. OpenAI says ad selection may use the current conversation’s context and intent. When ad personalization is enabled, selected signals from the broader ChatGPT experience may also be used, depending on settings; OpenAI lists past chats and memory among possible signals.

OpenAI’s stated position is that ads do not influence answers. Its Help Center puts it plainly: “Ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers.” That is OpenAI’s product and policy description; the official material reviewed does not include an independent audit or user study measuring answer independence or how reliably people recognize ads.
How to inspect, hide or report an ad
- Open the ad’s menu. Use the ad’s three-dot menu to find options such as About this ad or a control explaining why you are seeing it, when available.
- Dismiss an unwanted placement. Choose Hide ad from that menu.
- Flag a concerning placement. Choose Report ad if it seems misleading, unsafe, inappropriate or otherwise policy-violating.
- Review personalization settings. Where available, go to Settings > Ad Controls to change ad personalization, provide feedback or clear ads data.
OpenAI says turning ad personalization off does not remove ads. Ads may still be selected using the current chat thread; the setting excludes other threads, ad history and topics from selection. Ads Controls are described as available to Free and Go users in regions where ads are available or expected soon, so the controls and exact labels may differ by account and location.

Who may see ads, and what the options mean
OpenAI’s Help Center describes a phased rollout. The test began in the United States on February 9, 2026, with gradual expansion to selected regions. OpenAI says Free and Go users may see ads; Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts will not. Accounts identified as belonging to users under 18 do not see ads, according to OpenAI. Eligibility and regional availability can change.
| Option described by OpenAI | Ad experience | Trade-off or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Free plan with ads | May show ads where the rollout is available. | Eligibility and availability depend on region and account. |
| Ads-Free option on Free | OpenAI describes an option to use Free without ads. | OpenAI says it comes with reduced message limits and feature access. |
| Go plan | May show ads where the rollout is available. | Eligibility and availability depend on region and account. |
| Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu | OpenAI says these accounts will not see ads. | Check current plan details and availability in ChatGPT. |
| Temporary Chat | OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not show ads. | Check the current interface and product guidance for availability. |
These are OpenAI’s descriptions of a changing rollout, not a guarantee that a particular account will have every option. Check the current plan and settings screens in your region.

What OpenAI says advertisers can see
OpenAI says advertisers do not receive chats, chat history, memories or personal details. It says advertisers receive aggregated, non-identifying performance information, such as total views or clicks. If you choose to send a message to an advertiser through an ad, OpenAI says that advertiser sees the message you send directly. These statements describe what OpenAI says advertisers receive; they are not a broader claim about all data processing by OpenAI.
