When Aspire telemetry is missing or looks stale, first identify whether the workload never exported it, the exporter is pointed at the wrong endpoint or protocol, sampling or retention removed it, or you are viewing a different run’s history. If telemetry is present but resources or console logs are absent, check the dashboard’s separate connection to the AppHost resource service.
Why is telemetry missing from the Aspire dashboard?
Start by narrowing down the gap. Note which signal is missing—logs, traces, metrics, resource information, or console output—and whether it affects one resource or the whole application. Also establish whether it is missing from the current run, appears only after a restart, or works locally but not in deployment.

- A resource marked running or healthy does not prove that a particular request succeeded or generated telemetry. For an unrepresented or failed request, inspect logs and traces correlated by trace ID.
- If only one signal is absent, check that signal’s instrumentation, provider, and emitted event or measurement rather than assuming the entire exporter is broken.
- If all signals are absent, investigate instrumentation and export configuration before dashboard history or retention.
Confirm the workload emits the missing signal
Adding a project to an AppHost does not automatically instrument every workload or library. The application must have appropriate OpenTelemetry instrumentation and an exporter configured to send data to a receiver.

For .NET projects using Aspire service defaults, the deployment guidance’s diagnostic setup includes builder.AddServiceDefaults();. That setup configures OpenTelemetry for logs, tracing, metrics, and exporters. A project that does not use service defaults needs its own SDK, provider, instrumentation, and exporter configuration. Python, Node.js, and other workloads need their respective language SDK setup.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
When just one signal is missing, verify that the corresponding provider or instrumentation is registered and that the code actually emits the event, span, log, or measurement you expect to see.
Check the endpoint and OTLP protocol in the failing environment
Inspect the configuration of the running process or container—not only a local launch profile. A deployment can have different endpoint, credential, or protocol settings from a local run. Aspire’s deployment troubleshooting guidance says the dashboard supports OTLP over gRPC and HTTP.

OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_ENDPOINT: confirm the endpoint is the one intended for this environment, including any required path, and that the host is reachable.OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_PROTOCOL: usegrpcfor a gRPC endpoint orhttp/protobuffor an HTTP endpoint. A receiver and exporter configured for different protocols will not exchange telemetry successfully. HTTP/protobuf is required for browser applications and many cloud services.OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_HEADERS: check that required authentication headers are present and valid.- Confirm the receiver expects the selected protocol, the credentials are accepted, and network, firewall, and certificate conditions allow the connection.
Do not assume one port applies to every Aspire hosting mode. The deployment guidance refers to dashboard ports 18889 for gRPC and 18890 for HTTP. The dashboard API documentation explains that AppHost maps standard OTLP ports 4317 and 4318 for resource containers, while standalone port mappings are configured separately. Use the endpoint shown or configured for the environment rather than hardcoding a remembered port.

A trace can be intentionally omitted by sampling; a missing trace does not necessarily mean the exporter failed. Aspire’s deployment guidance says its service defaults configure 100% sampling for development and advises checking the production sampling configuration. Confirm the policy in the environment where the trace is missing.

Local development also uses small export intervals so telemetry becomes available quickly. Do not assume the same export cadence in deployment or with a different SDK; allow for the configured interval before concluding that recent data was lost.
Tell current-run data from retained history

| Dashboard mode | Default persistence | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| AppHost-launched dashboard | Run | Dashboard history retains up to 10 runs per application. Select the current run when diagnosing current telemetry; older runs are available read-only. |
| Standalone dashboard | None (temporary) | Data is not configured for continuity across restarts by default. |
| Standalone dashboard configured for continuity | Resume | Use --persistence Resume with a stable application name and persistent data directory. |
For a standalone dashboard in a container, mount ASPIRE_DASHBOARD_DATA_DIRECTORY on persistent storage and reuse the application name, directory, and persistence mode. Otherwise, a restart or a changed application identity can make retained data appear to have vanished.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Run history is not the only retention limit. The dashboard configuration reference describes limits that bound stored telemetry: when log, trace, or metric retention limits fill, the oldest records are evicted. Attribute and span-event limits can truncate incoming details, while the resource limit can reject telemetry for new resources. Check the configured limits before treating missing older records or shortened span details as an exporter failure.

Aspire describes the dashboard as a local-development and short-term diagnostic tool, not long-term production observability. For production, configure a durable telemetry backend; dashboard persistence is not a substitute for one.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why do I see telemetry but no resources or console logs?
Telemetry ingestion and resource display are separate paths. The dashboard receives resource information from a gRPC resource service hosted by the AppHost, so telemetry can appear even when that connection is failing.
- Run
aspire run --log-level Debug. - Inspect dashboard and AppHost output for gRPC status codes or TLS handshake failures.
- Check certificate validity, resource-service endpoint reachability, and firewall or network conditions between the dashboard and AppHost.
A gRPC or TLS error here points to the dashboard-to-AppHost resource-service connection, not necessarily to OTLP export from the workload.
Query and preserve the data that arrived
Use the Aspire CLI to inspect collected signals. For structured output, add --format Json; when querying a standalone dashboard, specify --dashboard-url.
aspire otel logs— inspect collected logs.aspire otel traces— inspect collected traces.aspire otel spans— inspect spans within traces.aspire export --output ./diagnostics.zip— package telemetry and resource data for offline analysis or sharing; export can also be scoped to a resource.
The dashboard’s Manage logs and telemetry controls can export, import, or remove data by resource and signal. Keep the selected time range, run, and resource consistent when comparing results. Telemetry and exports may contain sensitive runtime values, so protect the dashboard data directory and any files you share. See the Aspire CLI reference for command details.
