For a desktop PC with a free, compatible SSD slot, an internal SSD is the simpler default for Steam games. It avoids relying on an external drive’s cable, port, and continued connection. An external SSD can be a practical way to add capacity when an internal upgrade is not feasible, but Steam warns that external drives may have performance issues or disconnect unexpectedly. That warning applies to external drives generally; Steam’s guidance does not compare external SSDs with internal SSDs in a controlled test.
Can Steam games run from an external SSD?
Yes. Steam lets you add a library location on another drive and install or move games there. In the Steam client, open Settings > Storage, add the drive as a library location, then use the Move option to transfer an installed game. See Steam Support’s guide to moving a Steam installation and games.

Steam distinguishes between storing games on another drive and installing Steam itself on an external drive. Steam Support says, “It is not recommended that you install Steam to an external hard drive, due to potential performance issues.” This is Steam’s warning about external hard drives; it does not specifically assess external SSDs.

External vs. internal SSD: what matters?
| Factor | Internal SSD | External SSD |
|---|---|---|
| Setup and connection | Installed in a compatible slot; no external cable or drive connection to maintain. | Connects through an external port and cable; it needs to remain attached and available. |
| Compatibility | Must match the PC’s supported form factor and interface. There is no universally compatible model. | Depends on the drive, interface, port, host system, and connection stability. |
| When it suits | A straightforward choice when the PC has a free compatible slot and the upgrade is practical. | A way to add game-library capacity when an internal upgrade is impractical, provided the connection is dependable. |
| Steam’s stated caveat | The cited Steam guidance does not make a general performance guarantee for internal SSDs. | Steam warns external drives can have performance issues and may disconnect unexpectedly; it does not isolate SSDs from HDDs. |
The table’s practical trade-offs follow from the connection and compatibility requirements, not from a published head-to-head benchmark. The reviewed Steam guidance does not establish universal load-time, frame-rate, or reliability differences between internal and external SSDs. Results can depend on the particular drive, its interface and port, the host PC, connection stability, and the game.

Can an external SSD affect gameplay?
It can, if the game experiences delayed disk responses, but that does not mean every external SSD will cause stuttering. Steam explains that games may read or write data during play and that slow disk responses can pause a game. Its hardware troubleshooting guidance says response times above 10–20 ms may start causing performance problems; this is troubleshooting guidance, not a universal SSD cutoff or a comparison of drive types. See Steam Support’s hardware troubleshooting guidance.
Steam also warns that an external drive can disconnect at an inopportune time. If a drive disconnects or the PC is forcibly shut down while it is being written, Steam says games may appear uninstalled and library information can be corrupted. Keep the drive connected during play and avoid interrupting transfers or shutdowns while the drive is active.

Which option should you choose?
Choose an internal SSD when the upgrade is compatible and practical
- Your PC has a free slot that supports the SSD’s form factor and interface.
- You want the library on a drive that does not depend on an external cable and port remaining connected.
- You are comfortable installing the drive or arranging the upgrade.
Choose an external SSD when capacity is the main constraint
- Your PC has no free compatible internal slot, or opening and upgrading it is impractical.
- You can keep the drive reliably connected to the PC.
- You accept Steam’s general warning about external-drive performance and disconnection risks.
Before buying an internal SSD, check your PC’s documentation for supported drive form factors and interfaces. For an external SSD, check that the drive and connection suit your system and intended use. The cited Steam pages do not identify a universally suitable model or provide comparative test results, so a specific loading-time or frame-rate improvement cannot be promised.
What about Steam Deck?
Steam Deck storage is a separate case from a desktop PC’s internal-versus-external SSD choice. Steam says the Deck uses built-in storage by default and supports microSD cards rated UHS-I class 3 or better. UHS-II and UHS-III cards are expected to work, but their higher transfer speeds are not supported. Manage storage from Steam > Settings > Storage. Steam’s Steam Deck storage guide does not recommend an external SSD as a game-library option, so the desktop comparison should not be treated as Deck-specific advice.
