How to Troubleshoot Microsoft Edge Launch and Loading Problems

Work out whether Edge itself or a single website is failing, then try the least disruptive fix first—from restarting Windows to repairing Edge in Settings.

If Microsoft Edge will not launch, freezes, closes unexpectedly, or fails to load just one website, the right fix depends on which symptom you have. Start with a Windows restart and lighter workload, then try the relevant browser or Windows repair steps below. These are troubleshooting options, not guaranteed fixes.

First, identify what is going wrong

  • Edge will not open: Start with a Windows restart. Updating Edge is not an option until the browser launches; use Windows repair later if simpler checks do not help.
  • Edge opens and then crashes or freezes: Reduce competing workload, restart Windows, and update Edge if it stays open long enough.
  • Edge opens, but one page will not load: Test the page in another browser before changing Edge. The site or your network may be the cause.

Microsoft’s Edge troubleshooting guidance covers crashes, failure to open, and pages that do not load. (The source URL is not reproduced here because the supplied source link is malformed.)

1. Restart Windows and reduce Edge’s workload

If Edge is frozen or slow, close tabs you do not need, pause downloads, and close other running apps. Uninstall extensions you no longer use if Edge remains accessible. Microsoft notes that memory pressure from other apps, extensions, or programs can prevent a page from loading. Restart Windows and try Edge again; a restart is also Microsoft’s first listed step when Edge will not open.

2. Update Edge if it launches

  1. Open Edge and select Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge.
  2. Install any update Edge offers, then try the browser again.

If Edge cannot launch, skip this step and continue to a remedy that does not require opening the browser.

3. Check for malware and security-software issues

Run a malware scan and check that any third-party security software is up to date. Microsoft recommends checking the security software, but that guidance does not establish that turning protection off is a safe general fix. If this is a work- or school-managed PC and you cannot change security controls, ask your administrator.

4. Clear selected browsing data if Edge opens

For a display or performance problem when Edge still opens, Microsoft suggests clearing browsing history and cached images and files. In the clear-browsing-data controls, choose the All time range for this specific troubleshooting step. You can select categories rather than clearing everything.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 13.5" Touchscreen Notebook - 2256 x 1504 - Intel Core i7 12th Gen i7-1265U - Intel Evo Platform - 16 GB Total RAM - 512 GB SSD (Platinum) (Renewed)
  • With 16 GB of memory, runs as many programs as you want without losing the execution

Broader clearing can remove history, download history, cookies and site data, cached files, passwords, autofill form data, and site permissions. If sync is enabled, clearing synced items may also remove them from other synced devices. Review the categories before confirming; you do not need to erase all data just to try the narrower history-and-cache option. See Microsoft’s guide to viewing and deleting Edge data.

5. Repair Edge from Windows Settings

Use Windows’ built-in repair when Edge will not open or the earlier steps have not resolved the problem. Microsoft’s Edge repair instructions require Edge to be closed for all users, administrator rights, and an internet connection.

  1. Close Edge for every user on the PC and sign in with an administrator account.
  2. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Find Microsoft Edge, select More options (if shown), then choose Modify.
  4. Approve the prompt, confirm the PC is online, and select Repair.

Microsoft says, “Your browser data and settings shouldn’t be affected by repair.” See its Edge repair instructions. (The supplied URL is incomplete, so it is not reproduced as a link.)

If Modify is missing, the installation may be managed by your organization; contact its administrator. Windows app repair is not available for every app. Although Windows describes Reset as a possible next option when Repair is unavailable or unsuccessful, it is a more consequential escalation; do not treat it as a routine first step for Edge. See Microsoft’s Windows app repair guidance.

If Edge fails on only one website

Open the same page in another browser. If it fails there too, Microsoft says the network or the website itself may be responsible. Restart your modem or router; if the page still fails, contact the site owner rather than assuming Edge needs repair. See Microsoft’s network troubleshooting guidance.
