That narrows the fix and helps avoid needless reinstalls. The steps below cover common symptoms across tools, with vendor-specific guidance where official instructions are available.
Start by identifying what is failing
Write down the exact error message and note whether the problem affects one feature, one file or language, one workspace, or every project. For example, inline suggestions can fail while chat still works, and a missing chat panel points to a different layer than an authentication error.

Check the provider’s service-status page before changing local settings. GitHub specifically recommends checking GitHub Status when Copilot is slow. A broad outage or service incident is unlikely to be fixed by reinstalling an extension.
- One feature: Check that feature’s settings, prerequisites, and account access.
- One file or language: Check language-specific settings and whether the issue reproduces in another file.
- One workspace: Try a small project or clean workspace to separate project context from a general failure.
- Every project: Check sign-in, service status, connectivity, client versions, and usage information.
Check account access, authentication, and usage
Confirm that the editor or command-line client is signed in to the account—and, where relevant, the organization—that has access to the tool. A connection or activation message can mean the account lacks the required entitlement or that the client could not retrieve an authentication token.

When Copilot reports an activation or connection problem
GitHub says Copilot activation failures can indicate that no Copilot plan is available to the signed-in account or that token retrieval from the GitHub API failed. Its documented first step is to sign out and back in, which requests another token. See GitHub’s common Copilot troubleshooting guide.
Distinguish a rate limit from an exhausted allowance
A temporary rate-limit response is not the same as using up a monthly allowance. In the VS Code Copilot FAQ, GitHub notes that a request may be temporarily rate-limited even when monthly AI credits remain, and recommends waiting briefly before trying again. Follow the timing and account-specific usage details shown by the tool; limits and reset rules vary by product and plan, so there is no universal quota or reset interval. See the VS Code Copilot FAQ.
Fix missing features and editor integration problems
If chat, inline completion, or agent actions are missing, check whether the feature is available for your account and enabled in the editor. Organization policies can also control access. Update the editor and the relevant extension or plugin, then restart the editor so the new version loads.

Copilot suggestions missing in some files
Check whether inline suggestions are disabled globally or for the affected language, whether the expected Copilot account is active, and whether the account has access to the feature. If the setting and access look right, test the same language in a smaller file and inspect the relevant logs. A problem limited to one file or project is a reason to investigate its configuration and context before treating it as a service-wide failure.
Copilot Chat or multi-line suggestions not appearing
Check the installed VS Code and Copilot versions, feature settings, account detection, and any organization policy. If chat is present but slow or unresponsive, use the network and workspace checks below. The official documentation does not establish one universal cause for multi-line suggestions failing, so use the exact symptom and logs rather than assuming a single fix.
Investigate slow or unreliable responses
GitHub’s guidance identifies network conditions, local system performance, editor configuration, and connectivity restrictions such as proxies or firewalls as possible causes of slow Copilot responses. These are useful troubleshooting hypotheses for other networked coding tools too, but are not guaranteed fixes for every vendor. See GitHub’s guide to slow Copilot responses.

- Compare networks: Check that the connection is stable. If possible, try another network or device to see whether the problem follows the current connection.
- Check traffic restrictions: Review VPN, proxy, firewall, and security software that inspects network traffic. Change a setting only if permitted by your organization’s policy.
- Isolate editor extensions: Temporarily disable other extensions, particularly other AI assistants, linters, formatters, or code-analysis tools, then retry.
- Reduce project complexity: Try a small file or a new minimal workspace. If the minimal case works, investigate the main project’s size, dependencies, and configuration.
- Check local resources: If the editor itself is sluggish, inspect CPU and memory use while reproducing the issue.
Use vendor-specific steps where they are documented
Claude Code: check the installation method
Anthropic describes Claude Code as a terminal agent that can read a repository, edit files, and run commands; IDE extensions are also available for VS Code and JetBrains. Update steps depend on how it was installed: native installations update in the background, while Homebrew and WinGet installations should be upgraded through their respective package managers. Consult Anthropic’s Claude Code user FAQ for current, error-specific instructions. Its FAQ is dated August 7, 2026.

OpenAI Codex: treat configuration errors as version-specific
For a Codex configuration or version error, identify which Codex surface and installed version you are using before changing settings. OpenAI documents a specific compatibility issue: specified newer versions no longer support approval_policy = "untrusted". For that error, the help page says to remove the setting, check profiles and managed configuration for other references, and restart after updating the configuration. Do not apply this fix to unrelated errors. See OpenAI’s Codex help page.
Cursor: use current official documentation
Cursor’s troubleshooting link is its official troubleshooting guide. The page currently redirects to general documentation, so detailed Cursor-specific procedures cannot be confirmed here. Use its current documentation rather than assuming that instructions for another editor apply.
Collect useful logs before contacting support
Capture the failure while it is happening, and include enough detail for support to reproduce it. In VS Code, GitHub directs users to open the Output panel and select the GitHub Copilot channel; in JetBrains, inspect the IDE logs. OpenAI’s Codex support guidance asks for the exact error text, request ID, timestamp, and time zone when available.

- Exact error text and the feature that failed.
- Editor or client version and AI extension or plugin version.
- Steps to reproduce, including whether it happens in a clean workspace or another network.
- Relevant log entries and, if available, request or correlation IDs and the time of the failure with time zone.
- A minimal example file or project when appropriate and safe to share.

What bug studies can—and cannot—tell you
A 2026 study by Ruixin Zhang, Wuyang Dai, Hung Viet Pham, Gias Uddin, Jinqiu Yang, and Song Wang analyzed more than 3.8K publicly reported bugs in the Claude Code, Codex CLI, and Gemini CLI repositories. The authors classified more than 67% as functionality-related and 36.9% as stemming from API, integration, or configuration errors. Those figures describe the study’s selected public bug reports and classification—not the share of all user incidents, the likelihood that a particular person will encounter a bug, or a comparative reliability ranking.
