Restore it only if you trust the app and its function requires access to files across the Mac. If the problem remains—or the task only involves a particular folder—check the narrower permission and troubleshoot the app before assuming the revocation was the cause.
First, identify what stopped working
Note the app’s name and version, your macOS version, the exact error message, and what happens when you use it. Does the app fail to launch, crash, or open normally but fail at one task? This distinction can help the developer identify whether the issue concerns a permission or something else.

The timing of the failure is a clue, not proof that revoking Full Disk Access caused it. The app, its version, the macOS release, and the resource it needs all affect the diagnosis; there is no single repair that applies to every app.
Decide whether Full Disk Access is appropriate
Apple describes Full Disk Access as permission for an app to access all files on the Mac, including data from other apps such as Mail, Messages, Safari, and Home, Time Machine backups, and certain administrative settings for all users. It is a broad grant, not a routine fix for any app error. Apple’s guide to Privacy & Security settings explains its scope.

- Restore access only if you recognize and trust the app and its intended function needs this level of file access.
- If you do not trust the app, or cannot establish why it needs broad access, leave Full Disk Access off and contact the app’s developer.
- If the failure concerns a specific user folder, check Files & Folders instead. That separate control covers locations such as Desktop, Downloads, and Documents; it may be a better match than granting access to all files. See Apple’s Files & Folders guidance.
Check or restore the permission
Settings labels depend on the macOS release. Apple says apps needing access to the full storage device must be explicitly added in macOS 10.13 or later. Use the labels present on your installed version.
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings on macOS 13 or later, or System Preferences on macOS 12 or earlier.
- Open Privacy & Security, then select Full Disk Access.
- Find the app in the list. If it is listed and you have decided that access is necessary, turn its access on.
- If it is not listed, use the Add control and choose the app; Apple also documents an Open control for adding one. Confirm that you selected the genuine app you intend to authorize.
- Quit and reopen the app, then retry the task that failed.
Apple’s instructions, including the version distinction and controls for adding an app, are in Controlling app access to files in macOS. Permission controls can change between releases, so follow the labels in your installed version.

If the app still fails, try routine troubleshooting
Restoring a permission may not resolve a separate app or macOS problem. Apple recommends these general steps for apps that stop responding, close unexpectedly, or will not open:

- Quit and reopen the app. If it is unresponsive, force quit it, then launch it again.
- Restart the Mac and test the same task.
- Install available updates for the app and macOS. For an App Store app, check the App Store; otherwise, use the app developer’s update instructions.
- If you are considering deleting and reinstalling the app, first protect or export important data it stores. Apple warns that deleting an app may remove data stored in it.

When to contact the app developer
If the app still fails after checking the relevant permission and trying the routine steps, contact its developer. Include the app and macOS versions, the exact error, what task fails, and which troubleshooting steps you already tried. For an App Store app, Apple recommends contacting the developer; its troubleshooting page explains how to find support details.
