Low FPS on a Ryzen AI Max laptop is only a problem after you compare like with like. First repeat the same game scene at the same resolution, preset, upscaling and ray-tracing settings, with the same driver, power profile and AC or battery state. Then check, in order, the laptop’s power policy, OEM drivers, shared-memory allocation, sustained cooling and firmware. Ryzen AI Max laptops are OEM-designed systems, so BIOS menus, performance modes and memory controls differ by model.
Do not assume that a single FPS number or temperature proves a fault. Record the conditions, change one variable at a time and give the manufacturer a repeatable result if the slowdown remains.

Why is my Ryzen AI Max laptop getting low FPS?
“Ryzen AI Max” identifies a family of mobile processors, not one fixed laptop configuration. Two machines can use different Ryzen AI Max SKUs, Radeon integrated-graphics implementations, memory capacities, firmware limits and cooling systems. Game performance also changes with resolution, graphics preset, ray tracing, upscaling, frame generation, Windows settings and whether the system is on battery.

AMD’s published comparison illustrates why its figures need context: the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 result used a 55 W test configuration with an ASUS ROG Flow Z13, Radeon 8060S graphics, 32 GB of RAM, a 1 TB SSD, virtualization-based security enabled and Windows 11. AMD describes selected 1080p high-settings tests; that configuration is not a universal power limit or an FPS promise for every title and laptop.

Use the following sequence to determine whether your result is a repeatable hardware or software limitation, a power-policy choice, a memory-pressure symptom or a sustained thermal issue.
1. Establish a repeatable baseline before changing settings
A reported “low FPS” result has no diagnostic value without its test conditions. Capture the information below and repeat a built-in benchmark or a reproducible scene at least twice. If the runs vary substantially, investigate background activity or thermal buildup before comparing drivers or BIOS versions.

Keep the display’s native specification separate from the game’s render resolution. For example, ASUS lists a 13.4-inch 2560 × 1600, 180 Hz panel for the cited 2025 ROG Flow Z13 GZ302 configuration at ASUS’s specifications page. Running a game at 1920 × 1080 or with an upscaler is a different workload from rendering at 2560 × 1600, even though the panel can refresh at 180 Hz.
A practical baseline procedure
- Restart the laptop and wait for Windows startup activity to settle.
- Connect the supplied or an OEM-approved AC adapter. Note whether the adapter is charging normally.
- Select the laptop maker’s performance-oriented profile, without changing BIOS or memory settings yet.
- Launch the same game build, load the same save or benchmark and use the recorded graphics options.
- Run the scene for long enough to expose a sustained decline, and save the frame-rate, clock, temperature and power readings shown by the OEM utility.
- Repeat once. Label each result with the date, driver and power state.
Use AMD’s published test details only as an example of complete reporting, not as a target that every Ryzen AI Max laptop must match.
2. Check power mode and background workload
Compact laptops commonly use different CPU and graphics power limits for battery, balanced and performance profiles. Menu names and available controls come from the OEM utility; do not assume that another manufacturer exposes the same options as the Flow Z13.

Run a controlled AC-versus-battery test
- With the laptop cool, run the baseline scene on AC in the OEM performance profile.
- Repeat on battery without changing game settings. Record the battery percentage and Windows power mode.
- Compare the sustained result, not the first few seconds. A large difference indicates a power-policy constraint or battery-saving behavior, not necessarily defective graphics hardware.
Return to AC for all other troubleshooting so that battery limits do not contaminate comparisons. If the performance profile is unavailable, select the highest-performance option the manufacturer documents; do not install an unrelated tuning utility just to create a missing mode.
Remove unusually heavy background work
Pause large downloads, game updates, cloud synchronization, video recording, rendering jobs, virtual machines and browser tabs running WebGL or video processing. Check Task Manager for a process consuming sustained CPU, GPU, disk or network resources. Close only applications you recognize, then repeat the identical scene. If FPS recovers, restore background programs one at a time to identify the conflict rather than changing firmware.

3. Verify the correct graphics and chipset drivers
Start with the support page for the exact laptop model and Windows version. Laptop manufacturers customize and validate graphics, chipset, hotkey, fan and power packages together. AMD states: “AMD recommends OEM-provided drivers which are customized and validated for their system-specific features and optimizations.” Install the OEM graphics and chipset package using the maker’s supported procedure, then reboot.
AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ 395 listing showed Adrenalin 26.9.2 WHQL Optional, released September 29, 2026, when checked October 13, 2026. Driver availability and status change, so treat that entry as a dated reference rather than a permanent recommendation. If a generic AMD.com package was installed immediately before the slowdown, compare it with the OEM package or use the manufacturer’s documented rollback path. Avoid stacking multiple cleanup tools and drivers during one test; you need to know which package produced each result.
Signs the driver is involved
- The slowdown began immediately after a graphics or chipset update.
- Only games using a particular API or feature fail while other workloads remain normal.
- The OEM driver restores performance or removes crashes that occur with the generic package.
- Device Manager reports an error, an unexpected Microsoft display driver is active or the OEM control application no longer changes profiles.
Record the previous and current versions before rolling back. A rollback that helps one game can leave another game with an older bug, so retest the same baseline and document the trade-off.

4. Should I change the VRAM allocation on a Ryzen AI Max laptop?
Ryzen AI Max integrated graphics use a unified memory pool. Graphics and Windows draw from the same physical LPDDR memory, while the firmware may reserve or expose a portion as graphics memory. Available controls, terminology and limits vary by OEM.

ASUS describes reallocating that unified pool between system RAM and VRAM and requires a reboot after a change. Those specifications and controls apply to that SKU, not to every Ryzen AI Max laptop.
When a UMA change is worth testing
AMD’s tuning guidance says, “The UMA frame buffer size is usually set to Auto in the BIOS by default and does not need adjusting.” Leave Auto in place when games run normally. Consider a supported allocation test only when a game reports insufficient graphics memory, textures are missing or visibly degraded, or the OEM documentation identifies a known allocation issue.
- Record the current UMA or VRAM setting and total installed memory.
- Change only to a value the OEM documents; do not guess at hidden BIOS options.
- Save the setting and reboot, as required on the Flow Z13.
- Run the exact baseline scene and compare frame rate, stutter and texture quality.
- Keep the change only if the measured symptom improves without creating system-memory pressure. Otherwise restore Auto and reboot again.
Increasing the reserved graphics amount does not guarantee higher FPS. It can reduce the memory available to Windows and may do nothing when the game’s bottleneck is shader work, power or cooling.
5. Check for sustained thermal or airflow limits
A laptop can perform well for the first minutes of a session and slow later as heat raises fan speed and power management reduces clocks. AMD lists cooling, motherboard design, BIOS, chipset driver and operating-system updates among factors that affect boost behavior. That makes a time-based comparison more useful than a single temperature snapshot.

Basic airflow checks
- Place the laptop on a firm, level surface; avoid beds, blankets and blocked intake openings.
- Confirm that exhaust and intake vents are unobstructed and that fans can ramp up in the OEM utility.
- Check whether a dock, monitor or peripheral arrangement is covering a vent.
- Repeat the benchmark after the machine has cooled, then run a longer session to see whether clocks and FPS fall together.
ASUS announced the 2025 Flow Z13 with a vapor chamber, larger intake vents and dual fans. That design information shows why cooling is important in a compact 2-in-1, but it does not prove that an individual unit is overheating or establish a safe universal temperature cutoff.
Capture evidence instead of guessing
Use the laptop maker’s monitoring tools to log CPU and graphics clocks, temperatures, package or graphics power and frame rate from the start of a run until the slowdown. A simultaneous drop in clocks, power and FPS after heat builds supports a sustained thermal or power limit. If temperatures or fan behavior look abnormal for that model, stop stressing the machine and contact OEM support. Do not open the chassis or apply an across-the-board temperature threshold based on another laptop.

After saving the original configuration and baseline result, check the manufacturer’s BIOS, firmware, chipset and control-software pages, plus Microsoft or OEM Windows Update channels. AMD identifies BIOS, chipset-driver and OS updates as factors that can change boost behavior.
- Read the release notes and confirm that the package matches the exact model and region.
- Install one category at a time, beginning with the OEM-recommended order.
- Reboot whenever the installer requests it.
- Repeat the same benchmark and record the result before installing the next update.
- If performance worsens, use the manufacturer’s supported rollback or recovery process rather than forcing an unrelated firmware image.
Keep third-party overclocking, undervolting and fan-control utilities out of the first-line diagnosis. They can overwrite OEM profiles and make it impossible to tell whether the laptop, driver or utility caused the change.
7. Interpret the pattern of results
The pattern across controlled runs usually points to the next action:

Do not convert these patterns into a universal FPS target. No broadly applicable FPS number or temperature cutoff has been established for all Ryzen AI Max laptops, games and OEM configurations.
8. What to send laptop support when troubleshooting does not resolve it
Support can act much faster when the report is reproducible. Include:
- Exact model, regional SKU and Ryzen AI Max processor.
- Game title and version, save or benchmark name, resolution, preset, ray tracing, upscaling and frame-generation settings.
- AC adapter model or battery state, Windows power mode and OEM performance profile.
- Graphics, chipset, BIOS/UEFI and Windows versions, including the date the issue began.
- Two or more repeatable results from the same scene, with average and 1% low FPS if available.
- Temperature, clock and power logs showing whether performance falls as the session continues.
- Any UMA or VRAM allocation change, reboot and rollback already performed.
- A note about whether the problem appeared after a game, driver, Windows or firmware update.
Attach screenshots or a short recording of the benchmark settings when the support portal allows it. The source information does not establish one root cause for every low-performing Ryzen AI Max laptop; these specifics let the OEM distinguish power policy, software compatibility, memory pressure, cooling and a possible hardware fault.

Example: using the ROG Flow Z13 specification without overgeneralizing
The Flow Z13 is a useful illustration of why model details belong in a diagnosis. ASUS’s cited specification lists the Ryzen AI MAX+ 395, Radeon 8060S, a 2560 × 1600 180 Hz display and 128 GB LPDDR5X-8000 onboard memory for a particular GZ302 SKU. Its unified-memory reallocation requires a reboot, and ASUS describes a vapor chamber, larger intakes and dual fans for the 2025 design. None of those figures tells an owner of another Ryzen AI Max model which BIOS options, power limits, display resolution or cooling behavior to expect.
Use the same discipline when reading benchmark charts: match the processor and Radeon configuration, wattage or profile, memory capacity and allocation, AC state, driver, Windows security settings, game build, resolution, preset and sustained temperatures. If any of those differ, treat the result as context rather than a promise.
