Short answer: Choose a Ryzen AI Max laptop if you want a compact, all-purpose computer with unusually strong integrated graphics and substantial CPU capability. Choose a conventional gaming laptop with a discrete GPU when maximum frame rates, a higher-tier graphics processor, or predictable gaming performance matters more than size and design.
The comparison is not “integrated graphics versus dedicated graphics” in the abstract. It is one complete laptop configuration against another: the exact GPU, power limit, cooling system, display resolution, memory, weight and price all affect the result. In independent testing, the Radeon 8060S in one Ryzen AI Max+ 395 convertible was broadly competitive with a 65–75-watt RTX 4070 Laptop GPU, but it did not win every game. Newer gaming laptops span RTX 5050, RTX 5070 and RTX 5080 classes, so a discrete-GPU machine can be either a similar performer or dramatically faster depending on the model.

The buying decision in one table
| Buying factor | Ryzen AI Max laptop | Gaming laptop with a dedicated GPU |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics design | Radeon 8060S graphics are integrated into the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 platform and use shared system memory. AMD lists 40 graphics cores for the 395 model. | A separate graphics processor has its own power budget. The GPU model, wattage limit, cooling and firmware determine the result. |
| Observed game performance | Notebookcheck found the Radeon 8060S in the tested ASUS ROG Flow Z13 broadly neck-and-neck with an RTX 4070 Laptop GPU configured at 65–75 W, with wins and losses depending on the game and resolution. | Current tested laptops range from RTX 5050 to RTX 5070 and RTX 5080 configurations. Higher-tier models can deliver substantially higher frame rates in individual games. |
| Processor and mixed workloads | Ryzen AI Max+ 395 has 16 Zen 5 CPU cores, 32 threads and support for up to 128 GB of LPDDR5x system memory. That combination can suit CPU-heavy work mixed with graphics tasks. | Results depend on the particular CPU, GPU, memory, cooling design and power settings. There is no single “dedicated-GPU laptop” specification. |
| Portability | The Flow Z13 example is a compact convertible laptop/tablet. Other Ryzen AI Max designs differ, so check each chassis. | Gaming laptops range from relatively portable models to large, heavy systems built around high-wattage GPUs. |
| Best fit | Buy when portability, one versatile machine and strong integrated graphics are your priorities. | Buy when gaming performance, upgrade options within a product line or access to a higher-tier GPU are the priorities. |
These are buying tendencies, not guarantees for every model. AMD’s Ryzen AI Max family includes variants with different graphics-core counts, and Notebookcheck’s result belongs to one tested Flow Z13 configuration.

Those figures describe the processor platform, not the guaranteed behavior of every laptop. A manufacturer can select a different sustained power target, cooling solution, memory capacity or display. Two laptops carrying the same processor can therefore produce different sustained clock speeds and game results.
Because the Radeon 8060S is integrated, it draws from the laptop’s system-memory pool rather than using a separate graphics-memory package. That reduces the need for a second graphics chip and can help a compact design, but the amount and configuration of installed memory matter to the complete system. Treat the memory capacity listed for the specific laptop as a core specification, not an afterthought.
AMD also publishes a claim that the Radeon 8060S averages 14% higher performance than the RTX 4070 discrete graphics in the previous-generation ROG Flow Z13. This is AMD’s own vendor comparison, not an independent universal result; the configurations and test conditions supplied by AMD apply to that claim. For a purchase decision, use independent tests of the exact laptop whenever they are available.

Is Ryzen AI Max good for gaming?
Yes, the Radeon 8060S can be very good for an integrated solution. In Notebookcheck’s review of the ASUS ROG Flow Z13 GZ302EA, the tested 8060S was broadly comparable with an RTX 4070 Laptop GPU running at 65–75 W. That is an unusually strong result for graphics integrated into a processor.
“Comparable” does not mean identical. Notebookcheck’s tables show both wins and losses across its tested games and resolutions. A title that favors the 8060S can run at a similar or higher frame rate, while another title can favor the RTX 4070 Laptop GPU. Driver versions, game engines, upscaling settings, thermal behavior and the selected resolution all influence the result.
The practical conclusion is that an AI Max laptop is suitable for serious 1080p gaming and can be a credible 1440p option when the tested game and settings support it. Do not turn one review into a promise that every Ryzen AI Max laptop will match every RTX 4070 laptop. The review covers one Flow Z13 configuration, and other AI Max variants have different graphics-core counts.
How does Radeon 8060S compare with an RTX 4070 laptop GPU?
The fairest published comparison is Notebookcheck’s result for the Flow Z13 against RTX 4070 Laptop GPUs in the 65–75 W range. In that controlled set of tables, the two solutions were broadly neck-and-neck rather than separated by a fixed percentage. The article’s game-by-game data is more useful than a single label because it shows which titles and resolutions favor each GPU.

- Identify the exact RTX 4070 Laptop GPU power limit. A low-wattage implementation is not equivalent to a high-wattage one with the same name.
- Match the game version, resolution, quality preset, ray-tracing option and upscaling mode.
- Compare average frame rate and, where published, frame-time or low-percentile behavior rather than relying on a headline GPU name.
- Keep the laptop’s display in mind. A 1440p panel asks more of the GPU than a 1080p panel, while an external monitor can change the workload again.
Do not combine scores from unrelated publications into a new average. Notebookcheck’s Flow Z13 tests and Tom’s Guide’s current gaming-laptop roundup use different systems and test procedures, so their numerical results are useful within each review, not as a single cross-review benchmark.

Why “a dedicated GPU” is not one performance tier
A discrete GPU can be faster than the Radeon 8060S, but the size of the advantage depends on the model. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 tested roundup includes laptops with RTX 5050, RTX 5070 and RTX 5080 graphics. That range covers very different performance classes. A laptop with a higher-tier GPU can produce much higher frame rates in games where the 8060S and a lower-power discrete GPU are merely close.
Power limits are especially important in laptops. A GPU with the same model number can be configured at different wattages, and the chassis may not sustain its advertised peak indefinitely. Cooling, CPU power sharing, memory configuration and the laptop’s firmware also influence performance. When a listing gives only “RTX 5070 laptop,” it leaves out information needed for a meaningful comparison.
The same caution applies to the AI Max side. Ryzen AI Max+ 395 is the 40-graphics-core example discussed here, but the wider family includes variants with different graphics-core counts. Check the processor suffix, graphics designation and installed memory on the exact product page.
Choose Ryzen AI Max when these priorities describe you
You want one compact machine for work and play
The Flow Z13 example combines a convertible form factor with a high-core-count processor and strong integrated graphics. If you move between office work, coding, photo or video tasks and gaming, avoiding a separate graphics chip can make a compact design attractive. The 16-core, 32-thread processor gives the system substantial CPU resources, while the integrated GPU handles games and graphics applications without requiring a conventional gaming chassis.
You value portability more than the last tier of frame rate
A compact convertible can be easier to carry and use in tablet or tent modes than a large gaming laptop. This is a design choice, not a performance guarantee: compare the dimensions, weight, keyboard, ports and display of the actual candidates. If the machine will travel daily, those physical differences may matter more than a small benchmark lead.
Your target games fit the tested performance envelope
Look for independent tests at your intended resolution and quality settings. If the games you play show the 8060S near the performance of a 65–75 W RTX 4070 Laptop GPU, an AI Max system may provide enough speed without buying a higher-tier discrete-GPU machine.
You need substantial system memory
AMD specifies support for up to 128 GB of LPDDR5x system memory on the Ryzen AI Max+ 395. Confirm how much memory is installed and whether it is user-replaceable in the specific laptop. The processor’s maximum support does not mean every model ships with that capacity.
Choose a conventional gaming laptop when these priorities describe you
You want the highest frame rates available in your budget
A discrete-GPU laptop gives you access to performance tiers above the 8060S, including the RTX 5070 and RTX 5080 systems represented in current testing. If you play demanding new releases, use a high-refresh display or plan to drive an external 1440p or 4K monitor, a higher-tier discrete GPU is the safer route. Verify game-specific results rather than assuming a model number guarantees a particular frame rate.

You are comparing against a higher-power RTX 4070 or newer class
The independent 8060S comparison centers on RTX 4070 Laptop GPUs configured at 65–75 W. It should not be extended automatically to every RTX 4070 implementation, and it says nothing definitive about every newer GPU. A well-cooled, higher-power or higher-tier discrete GPU can pull ahead substantially in games that scale with additional graphics resources.
You prefer a gaming-focused chassis
Conventional gaming laptops commonly provide larger cooling systems, gaming-oriented keyboards and displays with high refresh rates, but designs vary. Assess the individual model’s fan behavior, sustained power limits, screen quality, battery capacity and weight. A discrete GPU does not make all gaming laptops alike.

When you have two product pages open, use this sequence instead of comparing processor names alone:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Write down the complete graphics configuration. Record the GPU model, stated graphics power or TGP, graphics memory where applicable and any listed boost or performance mode.
- Confirm the processor variant. On an AI Max system, check whether it is Ryzen AI Max+ 395 or another family member and note the graphics-core count when provided.
- Match independent game tests. Use the same games, resolution, quality preset, ray tracing and upscaling mode. A 1080p result should not be compared with a 1440p result.
- Check the laptop’s sustained behavior. Look for measurements taken after the system has been under load, not only a short peak benchmark. Note whether the test used a performance mode or a quiet profile.
- Compare memory and storage. Record installed RAM, memory type, capacity and upgradeability. On an integrated-GPU system, memory configuration is particularly relevant because the GPU shares system memory.
- Compare the display to your target use. Note resolution, refresh rate, brightness and adaptive-sync support. A faster GPU is less useful if the built-in panel cannot show its output, while a high-resolution panel increases the rendering workload.
- Compare the physical system. Weigh portability, thickness, keyboard, ports, webcam, hinge or tablet functionality and charger size against the gaming laptop’s cooling and ergonomics.
- Check price in your country and at the time of purchase. There is no universal budget or regional price; availability and promotions can change the value calculation.
- Score your non-gaming workload. Decide whether CPU throughput, GPU acceleration, memory capacity, silence, portability or display quality matters most outside games, then give those factors a weighting before looking at the final gaming result.
How to read benchmark claims without being misled
Separate manufacturer claims from independent tests
AMD’s 14% figure is a specific company comparison with stated configuration context. It can show what AMD expects under its chosen conditions, but it is not an independently verified average for all AI Max laptops. Notebookcheck’s Flow Z13 review is independent testing of one system and one set of comparison GPUs. Label each result accordingly.
Keep test suites separate
Tom’s Guide’s 2026 roundup establishes that current dedicated-GPU laptops span RTX 5050, RTX 5070 and RTX 5080 systems and provides game-specific results for those models. It is useful evidence of the range of discrete-GPU performance, but its scores are not a controlled head-to-head with Notebookcheck’s Flow Z13. Do not calculate a synthetic average by mixing the publications.
Look for title-dependent behavior
Neither graphics design wins every game. The 8060S and RTX 4070 comparison includes both victories and defeats across tested titles and resolutions. A review that tests only one game cannot establish a universal equivalence.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- “Integrated graphics are always slow.” The Radeon 8060S is an unusually capable integrated GPU. Judge it by independent results for the exact laptop and games you care about.
- “The 8060S equals every RTX 4070 laptop.” The published comparison is to 65–75 W RTX 4070 Laptop GPUs in one test suite, with game-to-game variation.
- “Dedicated GPU” describes a fixed speed. RTX 5050, RTX 5070 and RTX 5080 laptops occupy different tiers, and power limits further separate models with the same GPU name.
- Comparing chip names while ignoring the chassis. Cooling, memory, display resolution and firmware can change the experience. Compare complete configurations.
- Assuming every Ryzen AI Max model has 40 graphics cores. The 40-core figure belongs to the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 specification. Other family variants can differ.
- Treating a peak TDP as a permanent operating level. AMD’s 45–120 W configurable range describes platform capability. The laptop maker’s sustained settings and cooling determine what the system can maintain.
- Using unrelated benchmark numbers as if they were one test. Keep Notebookcheck and Tom’s Guide results within their original review context.
A practical decision tree
- Is the main goal the highest gaming performance? If yes, start with discrete-GPU laptops and compare higher-tier models by game and power limit. If no, continue.
- Is a compact convertible or tablet-style design important? If yes, an AI Max laptop deserves priority because that form factor is a central advantage of the Flow Z13 example. If no, continue.
- Do your target games test near the 8060S’s strengths? Check independent 1080p or 1440p results at your planned settings. If they meet your target, the AI Max option can be sensible; if not, move to a discrete GPU.
- Will you use a high-resolution external display or demanding ray tracing? If yes, favor a discrete GPU with the required performance headroom and verify the laptop’s power limit. If no, the AI Max system may deliver the better balance of size and capability.
- Do the two candidates have different memory capacities or prices? Recalculate the value using the complete configurations. A nominally faster GPU may not be the better purchase if the rest of the laptop misses your requirements.
Bottom-line recommendation
Buy a Ryzen AI Max laptop when you want a compact, versatile computer and consider strong integrated graphics a major benefit. The Ryzen AI Max+ 395’s 16 CPU cores, 40-core Radeon 8060S and support for up to 128 GB of LPDDR5x make the platform unusual among thin designs, and the tested Flow Z13 shows that its gaming can approach a 65–75 W RTX 4070 Laptop GPU in some workloads.
Buy a conventional gaming laptop with a dedicated GPU when gaming performance is the deciding factor, especially if you are considering an RTX 5070- or RTX 5080-class system. For either choice, the responsible comparison is the same: match games, resolution and settings; verify GPU power limits; inspect memory, display, weight and cooling; and judge the exact laptop rather than a processor or GPU name in isolation.
