How to Troubleshoot Linux Driver and Hardware Compatibility Problems

Find out whether Linux cannot see your device, lacks a bound driver, is missing firmware, or is blocked by Secure Boot—and test fixes one change at a time.

If Linux cannot use a device, first find out where the failure occurs: the device may be missing from the hardware inventory, visible but lacking a bound driver, failing to load firmware, or working at the kernel level while its user-facing function fails. Check those stages in order before installing anything. Record your distribution and release, kernel version, exact device model or hardware ID, connection type, and when the problem began; then use the same checks to verify any change.

What to record before troubleshooting

Keep a short record so you can compare results and undo changes if needed.

  • Distribution and release, plus kernel version.
  • Device make and model; for PCI or USB hardware, its vendor and device ID.
  • How it connects: PCI slot, USB port, internal radio, dock, or another connection.
  • What fails and when it started. Note whether it followed a kernel update, firmware or BIOS change, driver installation, suspend/resume, or hardware change.
  • Command output and relevant timestamps, saved before changing packages or configuration.

Keep a known-good boot or recovery route available before changing kernel modules or boot parameters.

Check whether Linux can see the device

Use a tool that matches the device’s bus. lspci -nnk lists PCI devices and can show the kernel driver in use; lsusb lists USB devices; lshw, where available, can provide a broader hardware inventory. Ubuntu’s hardware-detection reference lists these tools for inventory checks: Ubuntu hardware detection. The Linux kernel’s PCI documentation explains PCI identification and discovery.

  • Device not listed: Linux has not enumerated it on that bus. Check power, cable or connection, port or slot, firmware/BIOS settings, disabled radios, platform compatibility, and possible hardware failure. Installing a driver cannot bind to hardware the system does not expose.
  • Listed with a driver in use: A kernel driver is bound. Investigate initialization errors, firmware, permissions, configuration, and the software or subsystem that provides the function you need.
  • Listed without a driver in use: Check whether the running kernel supports that exact device ID and revision, whether a suitable module is available, and whether firmware, a blacklist, configuration, or Secure Boot is preventing it from loading.

For a Wi-Fi adapter, for example, distinguish “not present in USB/PCI inventory” from “present but no driver in use” before changing network settings or installing a driver.

Inspect kernel messages and driver state

Reproduce the problem, then review kernel messages from around that time. Use journalctl -k where available, or dmesg if your system permits access. The kernel ring buffer can contain probe failures, missing-firmware notices, signature rejections, resource conflicts, and device resets. Ubuntu’s kernel protections guidance explains the role of dmesg and notes that policy can restrict access; elevated privileges may be required.

Search for the device ID or model and read the surrounding messages, not just one error line. Save the output with its timestamps and kernel version. Before posting logs publicly, review them for sensitive information. A single message is not a universal diagnosis: interpretation depends on the device and subsystem.

Distinguish a driver problem from a firmware problem

A driver is kernel software that communicates with the device; firmware is separate code or data that some devices need during initialization or operation. A device can be detected and have a driver available while still failing because required firmware is absent. The kernel documentation has a dedicated firmware section, but the required files and package names vary by hardware and distribution.

If a kernel message names a missing firmware file, use that exact filename to find the package and installation instructions for your distribution release or the device maintainer. Avoid downloading firmware blobs from unverified sites or installing packages meant for another release.

Check Secure Boot if a third-party module will not load

On Ubuntu, Secure Boot validates kernel modules, so an unsigned module can be rejected even when it is otherwise suitable for the device. Ubuntu documents a Machine Owner Key (MOK) process for signing or enrolling third-party modules; follow the instructions for your release and architecture in its Secure Boot documentation.

Do not treat disabling Secure Boot as the default fix. It changes a security control and may conceal the underlying signing problem. Other distributions may use different module-signing policies and tools.

Use a driver source compatible with your distribution

Prefer an in-tree kernel driver or the distribution’s supported package route when one is available. A driver must support the exact hardware and work with your distribution release and kernel; choosing the newest-looking package alone is not a reliable compatibility test.

Ubuntu example: NVIDIA graphics

For NVIDIA GPUs on Ubuntu, Canonical recommends the ubuntu-drivers tool or the Additional Drivers application. These use the same selection logic and default to prebuilt signed drivers. Canonical warns that installation methods outside its documented route may overwrite Ubuntu-provided packages or cause Secure Boot problems. Consult the current Ubuntu NVIDIA driver instructions for the release-specific route and available driver packages; do not assume a branch or package name from another release applies.

Choose among supported driver options

When more than one documented route exists, compare the factors that affect whether it will work and remain maintainable.

  • Device match: Does the driver support the exact vendor/device ID and hardware revision?
  • System match: Is it supported on your distribution release and running kernel?
  • Source and maintenance: Is it an in-tree kernel driver, a distribution package, or a vendor-provided module, and who supplies updates?
  • Secure Boot: Is the module signed or supported by your distribution’s enrollment/signing process?
  • Recovery: Can you reverse the change cleanly, and how will future updates be delivered?
  • Needed capability: Does the option support the particular function you need, rather than merely detecting the device?

The Linux PCI documentation covers device identification and driver binding; Ubuntu’s Secure Boot and NVIDIA guidance illustrate why signing and package provenance matter for that platform. These checks do not establish a universal driver-installation method for every Linux distribution or device class.

Apply one change, then verify the result

  1. Choose one change supported by the evidence: for example, install a distribution-provided firmware package, correct a configuration issue, or use the distribution’s driver tool.
  2. Reboot if the change or its documentation requires it. Avoid changing several drivers, kernel parameters, and firmware settings at once.
  3. Repeat the same inventory command and check whether the driver is now listed as in use.
  4. Review kernel messages again, then test the specific function that originally failed.
  5. Keep before-and-after outputs. If the change makes things worse, revert it through the distribution package manager or restore your configuration backup, then test another supported explanation.
