If a game looks blurry or shimmery, first identify which DLSS feature is active: Super Resolution, DLAA, Frame Generation, or Ray Reconstruction. They do different jobs, so changing an upscaling mode will not necessarily fix an artifact caused by ray-tracing reconstruction or the game’s integration. Compare one setting at a time in the same scene, at the same output resolution.
Which DLSS feature is affecting the image?
DLSS is a group of technologies, not one universal image-quality switch. NVIDIA describes Super Resolution as using AI to produce higher-resolution frames from lower-resolution input, drawing on multiple images, motion data, and information from prior frames. As NVIDIA puts it, “DLSS Super Resolution boosts performance by using AI to output higher-resolution frames from a lower-resolution input.” NVIDIA’s DLSS developer overview explains the feature distinctions.

- Super Resolution reconstructs the output from a lower-resolution render. Its mode can affect both detail and performance.
- DLAA uses the Super Resolution technology for AI anti-aliasing at native resolution. It is a useful image-quality comparison when available and your performance budget allows, but it is not the same trade-off as upscaling from a lower-resolution input.
- Frame Generation creates additional frames. It is separate from Super Resolution and does not perform the same image reconstruction task. NVIDIA says Frame Generation is paired with Reflex for responsiveness; that does not mean it fixes blur or shimmer in the underlying image.
- Ray Reconstruction is designed for ray-traced or path-traced scenes, replacing conventional hand-tuned denoisers with a learned reconstruction network. If the problem appears only in those effects, test this feature separately.
Feature availability varies by game and GPU. NVIDIA’s DLSS technology page distinguishes support by GPU generation; check the exact feature and title rather than assuming every RTX card exposes every option.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to troubleshoot blur or shimmer in a game
- Record what is active. Note the game, GPU, display/output resolution, DLSS feature and mode, ray-tracing status, and when the artifact appears. Is it visible in a still scene, only during movement, or only around a particular effect or material?
- Compare Super Resolution modes at your output resolution. If the game offers Quality, Balanced, Performance, or Ultra Performance, test the available choices in the same scene. These modes represent different scaling choices in game implementations; because the input is lower resolution than the output, changing the mode can alter both image detail and performance. There is no universal best mode for every game, output resolution, and GPU.
- Compare against native-resolution anti-aliasing if available. Try DLAA as a quality reference when your game offers it and performance permits. It keeps rendering at native resolution, unlike lower-resolution Super Resolution modes, so do not treat it as a like-for-like performance setting.
- Isolate Ray Reconstruction in ray-traced content. If the issue is limited to a ray-traced or path-traced scene, compare the same view with the game’s Ray Reconstruction control changed, if available. This can help establish whether the symptom is associated with that reconstruction path; it cannot prove the cause or guarantee a player-side fix.
- Test Frame Generation separately. If the complaint concerns motion presentation, change Frame Generation without changing Super Resolution at the same time. This keeps the test focused on generated frames rather than upscaling.
- Check for supported updates, then repeat the comparison. NVIDIA says its app can update supported games to use newer DLSS features and models. Check current game and GPU support, apply an update only when it is offered for your setup, then compare the same scene before and after.
What blur and shimmer can—and cannot—tell you
A visual artifact does not by itself identify a faulty DLSS mode. Some problems can arise from how the game integrates the technology, and those implementation details are not settings a player can usually adjust.

Shimmering or flickering
NVIDIA’s developer integration checklist says, “Incorrect or missing jitter can lead to poor anti-aliasing and increased flickering.” Jitter here is a rendering input the game must handle correctly. This is a developer-facing failure mode, not a diagnosis of every shimmering image. NVIDIA’s DLSS integration guidance also discusses motion vectors, exposure, buffers, and placement in the post-processing pipeline. Those are engine-integration considerations, not controls to hunt for in a player’s graphics menu.
Blurry or smudgy textures with Ray Reconstruction
NVIDIA’s checklist says that when Ray Reconstruction is enabled, failing to set mip-map bias can make textures look “blurry, smudgy, or low-resolution.” In that statement, the missing mip-map bias is the specific integration condition. It may help explain a game-specific symptom, but it does not establish that this is the cause in any particular player’s scene.

Newer DLSS models and performance expectations
NVIDIA describes DLSS 4.5 as adding second-generation transformer models for Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction, while support varies by GPU generation and game. A newer model is not a promise of higher frame rates or visibly better results in every title.

In its DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution FAQ, updated January 14, 2026, NVIDIA says Model M is optimized for Performance mode and Model L for Ultra Performance mode. NVIDIA recommends those pairings for the quality-versus-performance benefit of the models. The same guidance says RTX 20- and 30-series users may see a larger performance impact from the newer model because those GPUs do not support FP8, and may prefer the previous Model K preset for higher frame rates. This is NVIDIA’s guidance, not an independent benchmark or a prediction for a particular game. NVIDIA’s DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution FAQ
