First make sure you are comparing the same measurement, units, place, time and conditions; then check the setup and the data before deciding whether calibration or repair is needed. The exact procedure depends on what the device measures and the sensor model.
1. Define what “inaccurate” means
Before changing a setting, write down the quantity being measured, the sensor and board model, firmware or software version if relevant, displayed units, observed value, timestamp and location. Record the expected value and its basis too: a specification, a suitable reference instrument, or another source. Note the power state and any recent changes to wiring, code, placement or environment.

Check the sensor’s datasheet and build instructions for its measurement range, claimed accuracy, response or warm-up time, installation requirements and calibration procedure. A DIY device should not be expected to match an unrelated household display or a reading taken elsewhere or at a different time. Make sure both readings describe the same quantity: for example, a sensor may report a different measure or use different units than the comparison device.
2. Check the installation and operating conditions
Inspect the device before adjusting its output. Depending on the sensor and build, relevant checks may include:

- Additional Tips - The following incorrect operations may cause the multimeter not to show results: Firstly, the plugs of test leads are not fully inserted or not inserted into the correct sockets. Secondly, the manual rotary switch is not placed in the correct position. In addition, this meter can not test all AC Current and below 100mV AC Voltage. Please check the user manual carefully before measurement.

- Whether the sensor is installed in its intended orientation and location.
- Nearby heat or cooling sources, direct sunlight, drafts, airflow or heat from the device enclosure.
- Moisture, condensation, dust, contamination or an obstructed inlet.
- Loose connectors, disconnected probes, damaged cables, wiring problems or unstable power.
- Incorrect units, an implausible configured range, or a displayed value that is stale rather than newly received.
These are possibilities, not faults that apply to every sensing technology. For its RFL100 device, Vaisala’s guidance recommends checking interference and moisture and allowing the probe to stabilize before calibration or adjustment. USGS field-instrument guidance also includes checking connectors and sensor condition; its specific procedures apply to multiparameter field instruments, not every hobby build.
Allow the device to settle
Give the sensor time to stabilize after power-on, moving it, changing its surroundings or changing the sample. Use the manual’s response or warm-up time rather than assuming a universal waiting period. If a probe is wet, follow its instructions for drying and recovery; Vaisala’s RFL100 guidance, for example, says to let a wet probe dry before proceeding.

3. Compare it with a suitable reference
Compare the DIY sensor with a calibrated reference instrument or recognized standard that is appropriate for the measurement. Take both readings at the same place and time, under the same conditions, after both instruments have settled. Confirm that they measure the same quantity and use compatible units. A consumer device is not automatically a reliable reference merely because its display seems plausible.

For a different, specific example, USGS field-measurement guidance says temperature can be checked against a NIST-certified or NIST-traceable digital thermometer. That thermometer example is for temperature; it is not a reference method for humidity, gas, pH or other measurements.

- Additional Tips - Please take off the cap before using the test leads. Check the manual for more usage information.
Repeat the comparison and record the difference, conditions and time. If practical, compare at more than one point in the sensor’s intended range. Agreement at one point does not show that the sensor is accurate across its range: a fixed offset may be present at one condition while errors elsewhere arise from gain, nonlinearity or changing environmental sensitivity. Adafruit’s educational guide describes one-point offset correction as useful in some cases, not as a universal calibration method.
4. Inspect the readings over time
A time series can help distinguish a persistent measurement problem from a real environmental change. Look for gradual drift, sudden jumps, isolated outliers, values that get stuck, missing readings or changes that track temperature, humidity, device heating or operating cycles. Check timestamps and data handling as well as the sensor itself: a stale display, dropped transmission or unit conversion bug can look like a sensor fault.

Review anomalies against what was happening in the environment and with the device. EPA quality-assurance guidance for air sensors recommends manual review in addition to automated checks and warns that automatic checks alone can miss subtle problems or flag real events as bad data. For air sensors specifically, EPA also discusses collocation and periodic checks to assess agreement and changes over time. Those air-pollution methods should not be applied wholesale to unrelated DIY sensors.
5. Know the difference between calibration and adjustment
Calibration is comparison of a device’s output with a known reference. Adjustment changes the instrument or reported measurement to correct it. Vaisala’s RFL100 user guide makes this distinction explicitly: calibration compares output with a known reference, while adjustment corrects the reading so the device measures accurately.

Establish a repeatable discrepancy before making an adjustment. Follow the procedure for the exact sensor, circuit or firmware, and keep a record of the original readings and changes. An offset changes the displayed value; it does not prove that the underlying sensor has been repaired or that it is accurate across its range. AcuRite’s support guidance describes an offset-style reading calibration for its own products and notes that the setting location depends on the connected product; this is not a general method for DIY devices.
Do not enter a guessed correction just to make one reading match. A software offset might improve agreement under one condition while leaving drift, range-dependent error or sensitivity to interference unchanged.
6. Clean, repair or replace only as the manual allows
Clean a sensing surface only with materials and methods approved by its manufacturer. Solvents, abrasion, water or heat can damage some sensors. Check the manual before swapping a detachable probe, cable, connector or power supply, and test or replace parts only where the build instructions support it.
If a valid comparison shows the sensor remains outside its stated specification, it has visible damage, or it cannot pass the maker’s calibration procedure, stop relying on it for consequential decisions and contact the manufacturer or a qualified technician. For direct-reading portable gas monitors, OSHA warns that harsh conditions and sensor degradation can cause inaccurate readings or failure and directs users to manufacturer instructions for service and replacement. That guidance is specific to gas monitors: do not use gas-monitor calibration or service procedures on a hobby sensor of another type.
