If a self-hosted cloud drive will not sync, first determine whether the problem is account/server access, one desktop client, or particular files. Preserve local and remote copies before changing sync settings or resetting anything. Nextcloud and Seafile handle some errors differently, so identify the product and version before following platform-specific advice.
Identify where syncing is failing
Before changing settings, note the server product and version, desktop-client version, operating system, exact error text, and when the problem occurred. Also establish the scope: does it affect every client and file, one device, one library, or only particular paths?

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Test browser access. Sign in to the cloud drive through a browser. If that fails, troubleshoot server availability, account access, or the network before changing desktop sync settings. Nextcloud’s administrator manual recommends this as the first connectivity check: Nextcloud general troubleshooting.
- Compare browser and desktop results. If browser access works but all desktop clients fail, investigate the desktop sync path, including WebDAV. Nextcloud desktop sync uses its built-in WebDAV access. A WebDAV client such as
cadavercan issue PROPFIND requests for a more detailed check; use it only if you are comfortable diagnosing WebDAV. - Determine whether the fault is broad or file-specific. When all files fail, check connectivity, authentication, WebDAV, server health, proxy or firewall rules, and server permissions. When only selected files fail, inspect their names, paths, open or locked state, local permissions, and server-side write access.
Fix errors affecting particular files
Check names and paths
Invalid characters can prevent a file from syncing. Seafile documents Windows-invalid filename characters as one possible cause. It also flags trailing spaces or periods. Rename only after confirming the file is safe to change and that the new name is valid on the relevant operating systems. Seafile’s troubleshooting guidance is in its syncing-client troubleshooting manual.
Check permissions, locks, and local access
Make sure the local sync folder is writable and the server account has write permission to the relevant library or folder. Seafile identifies read-only or cloud-only server permissions and file locks as possible causes of failed sync. Close the file in other applications and retry; if the issue persists, check whether antivirus software is interfering with indexing or metadata access. Also confirm that the client device has enough free disk space.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
For Nextcloud’s local storage backend, do not edit the server data directory directly: the directory is meant to remain under Nextcloud’s exclusive management. See the Nextcloud administrator troubleshooting guidance.
Troubleshoot failed uploads and connection errors
Nextcloud: “Connection closed”
Nextcloud’s current administrator manual says a “Connection closed” error can result from chunks that are too large or timeout settings. The desktop client has chunk-related settings, including chunkSize, minChunkSize, maxChunkSize, and targetChunkUploadDuration. Their appropriate values depend on the installed client version and infrastructure. Consult the documentation for that version and adjust one setting at a time so you can tell whether a change helped. See Nextcloud general troubleshooting.

Seafile: “Failed to upload file blocks”
Seafile’s FAQ associates this message with network or firewall settings that interfere with batched file blocks. Check the client’s network path and applicable firewall rules rather than assuming the file itself is damaged. See the Seafile syncing FAQ.
Recover safely from a sync conflict
A conflict can occur when both the local and remote versions change between sync runs. Nextcloud describes the client as unable to resolve that situation automatically: “When a file has changed on the local side and on the remote between synchronization runs the client will be unable to resolve the situation on its own.” The remote version remains at the base filename; the local edits are saved in a local file identified as a conflicted copy. By default, Nextcloud does not upload that conflict copy to the server. See the Nextcloud conflict documentation.

- Locate both the original and conflicted copy. Do not assume the conflict copy is present on the server.
- Open and compare both versions. Copy or merge the changes you need into the version you intend to keep.
- Confirm the merged result is saved and has synced successfully before removing the extra copy.
Seafile also preserves a competing version as a conflict file. Its name includes the author’s email and a timestamp. When syncing an existing local folder with a Seafile library, differing contents can produce conflict files rather than silently overwriting either version. Check that the expected copies are present before deleting files or resyncing. See the Seafile syncing-client troubleshooting manual.
Collect useful evidence before escalating
Record the exact error, its timestamp, affected file or library, and the product, client, and operating-system versions. Nextcloud provides a desktop log window and debug archive, as well as a server log. Its manual warns that logs may contain sensitive information; redact credentials, tokens, private paths, and personal data before sharing them. See Nextcloud general troubleshooting.

- All devices or files affected: include browser-access results and any WebDAV, server-health, network, or permission checks.
- One device affected: include its client version, operating system, local folder permissions, free space, and relevant client log entries.
- Only selected files affected: include the paths and names, the exact error, and whether the files were open, locked, or inaccessible.
Avoid risky resets and cleanup
Do not run another synchronization application against the same directory as Nextcloud at the same time; Nextcloud says this is unsupported and can cause data loss. Do not manually change the Nextcloud server data directory. For Seafile, a server-side deletion can move a folder containing not-yet-uploaded local changes into the local recycle-bin location, so inspect the client error and preserved files before cleaning up.
Deleting a sync database, resetting an account, unlinking a library, or starting a full resync is not a safe generic first fix: it can change sync state or make local-only edits harder to recover. Follow the procedure for the installed product and version after preserving both local-only and remote-only work. Nextcloud’s guidance on deleting a per-account .sync_xxxxxxx.db file applies to a particular “CSync unknown error,” and notes that doing so also erases some file-download settings; it is not a general-purpose reset. See Nextcloud general troubleshooting.
