Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteNextcloud is the best starting point for most people looking for a free, open-source OneDrive alternative with server-based syncing and sharing. Choose ownCloud Infinite Scale if virtual files are a priority, Seafile if you want another server-based sync and sharing system, or Syncthing if you only need to keep your own devices in sync without a central server. The software can be free; self-hosting still takes hardware or hosting, storage, electricity, maintenance, and a separate backup plan.
Which OneDrive alternative fits your needs?
| Option | Best fit | What the available documentation establishes | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nextcloud | A general-purpose server for syncing and sharing files | Its manual describes open-source file sync and sharing software, a free server, and desktop, Android, and iOS clients. Nextcloud User Manual | The current sync documentation says Android bidirectional sync is not fully implemented. Nextcloud sync details |
| ownCloud Infinite Scale | Server-based sync when virtual files matter | The desktop app offers virtual files: placeholders can appear locally and download file contents when used. ownCloud desktop app | Desktop app 7.0 and later supports Infinite Scale only; ownCloud Classic requires a 6.x client. |
| Seafile | Another server-based option for sync and sharing | Seafile’s admin manual describes an open-source cloud-storage system for file sync, sharing, and document collaboration. Seafile Admin Manual | The cited overview does not establish the feature boundaries of each edition or a complete client-platform matrix. |
| Syncthing | Direct synchronization between your devices, without relying on a central server | A 2026 comparison describes Syncthing as peer-to-peer, unlike server-based Nextcloud and Seafile. 2026 comparison | This distinction comes from a secondary source; current official client and mobile details are not established here. |
How to choose
Choose Nextcloud for a broad, self-managed service
Nextcloud is the clearest default if you want files on a server that you can reach and share, along with desktop and mobile clients. Its current manual covers the server and client ecosystem, while its synchronization page recommends desktop clients for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Check the Android limitation before you depend on two-way folder sync from an Android device.

Choose ownCloud Infinite Scale for virtual files
Virtual files can reduce how much local disk space a synced folder uses: files are represented locally, and contents transfer when you use them. Confirm the feature works on the specific operating system and desktop client you plan to use. ownCloud’s server download page lists Infinite Scale 8.2.0, released August 10, 2026, and describes it as fully open source. ownCloud server downloads
Check compatibility before installing the desktop client. The ownCloud desktop app page lists version 7.1.1, released September 1, 2026, with Windows, macOS, and Linux downloads; it says version 7.0 and later connects only to Infinite Scale. If you run ownCloud Server Classic, the page says to remain on a 6.x desktop client. ownCloud desktop app and compatibility
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required

Consider Seafile, but verify edition details
Seafile’s official admin manual establishes its role as open-source software for cloud storage, syncing, sharing, and document collaboration. That description does not tell you which features are included in each edition, or confirm support for every operating system you use. Check the current documentation for those details before choosing it. Seafile Admin Manual
Choose Syncthing only if device-to-device sync is enough
A peer-to-peer approach can suit someone whose goal is to keep selected devices synchronized rather than provide a central web-accessible service for files and sharing. The available comparison places Syncthing in that category, but current official client and mobile support details are not established here. Verify those directly with the project before relying on it for a specific device combination.

What to check before replacing OneDrive
- Where files need to be available: Decide whether you need a server that acts as a shared access point, or only synchronization among your own devices. Server-based services and peer-to-peer sync solve different problems.
- Sharing and accounts: If other people need access, check the exact link-sharing and access-control features in the edition you plan to run; do not assume they are identical across products or editions.
- Every device you use: Confirm current support for each desktop and mobile operating system. In particular, Nextcloud’s manual says Android bidirectional sync is not fully implemented.
- Local storage use: If you do not want every file downloaded to every computer, verify virtual-file or selective-sync support for your operating system and client.
- Moving existing files: ownCloud documentation lists a Cloud Importer with Microsoft OneDrive support. Check the importer’s current prerequisites and limits before planning a migration. ownCloud desktop app information
- Data export and recovery: Find out how the server stores files and how you can export them. Sync is not a backup: changes and deletions can propagate, so arrange a separate recovery copy.
Plan for upkeep and avoid sync conflicts
Self-hosting makes you responsible for keeping the service available and maintained. That may mean using hardware you already own or arranging hosting, plus accounting for storage, power, updates, and backups. The software’s open-source status does not make those operating costs disappear.
Do not point multiple sync services at the same local directory unless their documentation explicitly supports that setup. ownCloud warns that syncing one directory through ownCloud and another sync service is unsupported and could cause data loss. Its desktop documentation also describes automatic two-way synchronization and conflict management. ownCloud desktop documentation
