How to Troubleshoot Failed Freshdesk, Slack, and Salesforce Integrations

A platform-specific guide to capturing evidence, identifying common integration failures, retrying safely, and escalating Freshdesk, Slack, or Salesforce API problems.

Start by preserving the failed request and response, then classify the error before changing credentials or retrying. A 401, 403, 429, and 500 point to different failure stages—and Freshdesk, Slack, and Salesforce do not share identical authentication, rate-limit, or retry rules.

What to capture before changing anything

Record one failed transaction in enough detail to reproduce and classify it. Redact secrets, but preserve the original values securely where your incident process requires them.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • When: exact timestamp and timezone; first failure, most recent failure, and frequency.
  • What: operation and direction (for example, Freshdesk ticket update to Salesforce), endpoint or URL, HTTP method, affected record, and API type.
  • Response: status code, response body, response headers—including Retry-After and any request or correlation ID—and client-side timeout or network details.
  • Request: sanitized headers and payload shape, including field names and types. Never expose API keys, OAuth tokens, passwords, or full webhook URLs in tickets or shared logs.
  • Scope and change history: affected account, workspace, organization, user, endpoint, and whether other operations still work. Note recent credential rotations, OAuth consent or permission changes, domain/path or schema changes, volume increases, and plan changes.

Scope helps narrow the cause: one record suggests data or validation; one user may point to access; one method or endpoint may indicate method-specific configuration or limits; broad failures may follow a credential, account, network, or vendor-service change. These are hypotheses to test against the captured evidence, not diagnoses by themselves.

How to classify the error

Failure stage What to check What to do next
Request or validation Malformed query or payload, missing required fields, incorrect data types, unsupported method Compare the request with the endpoint’s current schema and method before changing permissions.
Authentication Missing, incorrect, expired, rotated, or misconstructed credentials; wrong tenant or domain Check credential freshness and authentication construction without putting secrets in logs or support requests.
Authorization or feature access Authenticated identity lacks a required role, permission, scope, or feature entitlement Check the integration user’s effective permissions and app approval policy.
Missing resource or content negotiation Invalid record ID, tenant/domain, endpoint path, Content-Type, or Accept header Verify the target identifier and exact URL and headers for that API.
Throttling Rate limit exhausted for the relevant platform, method, workspace, account, or endpoint Honor Retry-After where supplied; reduce concurrency or queue calls.
Temporary service or network error Unexpected server response, service load, timeout, or network-path issue Preserve evidence, check vendor status/support channels, and retry only as appropriate for the operation.

HTTP status is a clue, not a complete diagnosis. Read the response body and headers in the context of the specific platform and API.

Why is my integration returning 401—or 403?

Authentication answers whether the service accepts the presented identity or credential. Authorization answers whether that identity is allowed to perform this operation. Treating every access failure as a bad password can lead to risky, ineffective changes.

Freshdesk

Freshdesk’s REST API documentation says requests use HTTPS, support JSON, and authenticate with an API key. Its error guidance identifies 401 with a missing or incorrect Authorization header. Check the portal domain, API key status and rotation history, header construction, endpoint path, and request method. A 403 is different: Freshdesk’s guidance associates it with insufficient agent privileges or a feature that is unavailable to the account. Check the executing agent’s access and the relevant feature availability rather than repeatedly replacing a valid key. See Freshdesk API error and debugging guidance.

Salesforce

Check which integration user is executing the call, which credential or token configuration it uses, and whether the Connected App permits that user. With a Connected App policy requiring pre-authorization, the relevant profile or permission set must be authorized. Review the app’s permitted-user policy and the user’s assigned permissions in Salesforce Connected App authorization guidance. Also check any Named Credential or token configuration used by the integration.

If failures started after MFA enforcement and the flow relies on UI-based login, OAuth web-server/user-agent/username-password flow, or SOAP login, inspect Login History. Salesforce’s guidance discusses migration alternatives such as JWT bearer or client credentials for affected flows; confirm the specific integration supports the replacement before changing it. Salesforce guidance on OAuth flows and MFA-related changes.

Why did a request fail before it reached the right record?

For Freshdesk, its documented status meanings provide useful checks: 400 can indicate malformed request or query data or missing required fields; 405 indicates an unsupported method; 404 can reflect an invalid ID, domain, or URL; 415 indicates an unsupported content type; and 406 an unsupported Accept header. Verify the exact path, tenant, verb, identifiers, required fields, JSON Content-Type, and Accept header. Do not try to solve a malformed request by broadening permissions. Freshdesk’s error table and response-body guidance are in its API documentation.

For Salesforce, inspect the response body for the particular API type rather than assuming every endpoint reports errors the same way. Check that the endpoint, resource identifiers, request body, and API version are appropriate to the operation. Salesforce’s API Error Troubleshooting Guide recommends investigating the response and identifying the API involved.

Why are requests being throttled?

There is no single safe limit to hard-code across these services. Limits can depend on method, endpoint, account, plan, or rollout cohort, and can change. Prefer response headers and the account’s live vendor guidance over a remembered quota.

Freshdesk limits and webhook callbacks

Freshdesk documents rate limits and headers in its API rate-limit guidance. Its support article, modified August 6, 2026, says the move from hourly to per-minute API limits is being rolled out in batches. It lists per-minute plan figures of Growth 100, Pro 400, and Enterprise 700 calls per minute, with endpoint sub-limits; those are not universal guarantees and may not describe every account. Check the current account regime and the actual response headers. API requests, automations, and external webhooks can all contribute to usage. See Freshdesk’s current API rate-limit article.

For automation webhooks, Freshdesk’s article says callbacks returning 200–299 count as successful, 300–399 are redirected, and other statuses fail. It describes retries once every 30 minutes, up to 48 calls, and a rate of 1,000 requests per hour; these figures are article- and account-specific, so verify applicability for the plan and signup cohort. A separate support article says a webhook postponed beyond 24 hours may be dropped and an admin alerted. Check the account’s current automation behavior and destination response rather than assuming a failed callback will remain queued indefinitely. Slack Web API

Slack applies Web API rate limits per method and workspace. A rate-limited response is HTTP 429 and includes Retry-After with the wait in seconds. Pause that method/workspace traffic for the returned interval, then resume in a controlled way; don’t substitute a fixed delay or infer a stable burst capacity, because Slack says burst limits can change and does not publish precise burst limits as a capacity target. Inspect the method, workspace, HTTP response, and rate-limit headers in Slack’s rate-limit documentation.

Salesforce API usage

Check API usage and allocations in Setup/System Overview or through the response/header and /limits mechanisms applicable to the API. Limits and their reporting can depend on API and org context, so use the org’s current usage data rather than a generic quota. The Salesforce API troubleshooting guide describes usage checks and recommends evaluating retries for temporary errors.

Why did Slack stop sending webhook messages?

For an incoming webhook, verify that the Slack app installation and OAuth setup completed, that the app requested the incoming-webhook scope, and that the generated webhook is configured for the intended channel. Confirm the endpoint in the sending system and inspect its HTTP response; keep the webhook URL private because it identifies the integration. Slack’s incoming webhook documentation explains setup, and its incoming webhook help article covers common setup questions.

If the sender reports 429, follow Retry-After as described above. If the response instead indicates a malformed or invalid request, correct the payload or endpoint rather than retrying unchanged. A successful HTTP response from the sender’s perspective does not by itself prove the message appeared in the intended channel; confirm the webhook’s channel configuration and inspect the Slack-side result.

Why are records no longer syncing to Salesforce?

Start with the failing API type and execution user, then compare the response body, org API usage, connected-app approval, scopes and credentials, endpoint, and any Named Credential or token configuration. Determine whether the failure affects all records or only records with particular values; the latter often directs attention to the request or record-specific validation rather than account-wide authentication.

When the break began matters. A failure immediately following a token rotation, profile/permission-set change, Connected App policy change, schema deployment, or volume spike is a lead to verify in logs and configuration—not proof of cause. For UI-based login or OAuth/SOAP flows affected by MFA changes, check Salesforce Login History and validate a supported migration path before altering a production flow.

When should you retry—and when should you stop?

  • Honor vendor instructions: when Freshdesk or Slack supplies Retry-After, wait at least that long before sending another request.
  • Retry temporary failures cautiously: for a genuine temporary server, load, or network-path failure, use bounded retries with backoff. Salesforce recommends anticipating temporary errors; Freshdesk also recommends queuing requests and caching nonvolatile data. See Freshdesk rate-limit guidance and the Salesforce troubleshooting guide.
  • Correct permanent failures first: do not repeatedly send malformed payloads, unsupported methods, denied operations, or requests with invalid credentials unchanged. Fix the input, access, or credential cause.
  • Protect write operations: before retrying a create, update, or other side-effecting call, determine whether the first attempt may have succeeded despite a timeout. Use an idempotency mechanism if the API supports one, or reconcile the target record before replaying, to avoid duplicates or repeated effects.

How to escalate with a useful evidence bundle

Escalate when the failure remains reproducible after checking the relevant request, identity, access, usage, and service status. Send a concise incident bundle, not just “it stopped working.” Salesforce specifically asks for detailed API context; Freshdesk requests the API script and response headers for unexpected server errors.

  • Organization, account, or workspace identifier, plus the affected integration and execution user.
  • API type, endpoint/URL, HTTP method, operation direction, and sanitized request headers and body.
  • Status, complete sanitized response body and headers, request/correlation IDs, and client or network logs.
  • Timestamp with timezone, first and last known failure, approximate frequency or failure rate, affected scope, and last-known-good time.
  • Relevant recent changes and the checks already completed.

Remove API keys, OAuth tokens, passwords, and webhook URLs before sharing logs beyond the authorized incident team. Salesforce’s API Error Troubleshooting Guide lists escalation details including org ID, API execution user, API type, time, URL/method, request and response bodies, and failure frequency. Freshdesk’s error guidance asks for the API script and response headers for unexpected server errors.
