If dbForge stopped connecting after an upgrade, first identify what changed: dbForge itself, SSMS or Visual Studio, Windows, or the database server. Then determine whether the problem is a failed database connection or dbForge tools missing from a host application. Those are different symptoms with different fixes; the upgrade alone does not establish the cause.
Start by identifying the failure
Before changing settings or reinstalling software, record the details that determine which troubleshooting path applies:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The exact dbForge product and edition, plus its old and new version numbers.
- What was upgraded: dbForge, SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), Visual Studio, Windows, or the database server.
- The host application and its version, if you use dbForge SQL Tools inside SSMS or Visual Studio.
- The database engine and version, authentication method, and exact error text.
- Whether dbForge opens but its connection test fails, or its tools have disappeared from SSMS or Visual Studio.
These distinctions matter: Devart documents a compatibility issue involving SQL Tools and updated host applications, but that does not explain every failed database connection.

This is a host-integration issue, not necessarily a database connectivity problem. Devart says each SQL Tools version is designed for the SSMS versions available when that tools version was released. After updating the host, the installed integration may no longer be present or compatible.
#1 Best Overall
- Uninstall the installed dbForge SQL Tools components.
- Install the appropriate SSMS or Visual Studio version.
- Install the latest SQL Tools version compatible with that host, using Devart’s current product requirements and release history to check compatibility.
- Allow the host to finish initializing the tools. Devart says the first SSMS setup may take approximately 1–2 minutes, depending on system performance; this is guidance, not a guaranteed duration.
Do not treat a version pairing in an older support example as a current compatibility matrix. Check the live compatibility information for the versions you actually use. Devart’s SQL Tools support article describes this integration scenario and recovery steps.
If dbForge opens but the database connection fails
Inspect the saved connection before deleting it or creating a replacement. A changed server name, authentication choice, password, database, port, or security option can prevent a previously working profile from connecting.

SQL Server connections
In dbForge Studio for SQL Server, verify the server or instance name, authentication method, login, password, target database, and any connection-specific options. Documented authentication choices include Windows Authentication, SQL Server Authentication, and Microsoft Entra methods. The Advanced tab includes connection timeout, execute timeout, encryption, and additional connection-string parameters.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the server uses a custom port, enter it after the server name separated by a comma; Devart’s example is localhost,62005. Use Test Connection to check whether the configured values work. See the SQL Server connection documentation for the available fields.
MySQL connections
In dbForge Studio for MySQL, check whether the connection uses TCP/IP or a named pipe, along with the host, port, credentials, and database. The documented default port is 3306. If the connection uses SSL or SSH, review those settings as well, then select Test Connection. The MySQL connection documentation describes these options.
Encryption or certificate errors
If the error points to encryption or certificate negotiation, compare the dbForge encryption setting with the database server’s requirements. Do not disable encryption as a blanket workaround: that can weaken connection security and may not address the actual mismatch.
Rank #4
Check the revision history for the exact dbForge product and version. For example, the dbForge Studio for SQL Server history says version 7.1.37, released April 7, 2025, resolved a connection issue related to the Encryption parameter. That historical fix is relevant only if the product, version, and error match; it does not establish that other post-upgrade failures have the same cause. See the SQL Server Studio revision history.
Edit a saved connection before recreating it
For SQL Server Studio, open Database Explorer, right-click the saved connection, and choose Modify Connection. Review and correct the parameters, then click Connect. The edited parameters are saved, making this a useful first check before removing the saved profile. The steps are documented in Devart’s Modify Connection guide.
For dbForge Studio for MySQL upgrades, Devart’s upgrade guidance says to close all running Studio instances except the one being upgraded. It describes updating through Help > Check for Updates or by manual installation. This is sensible upgrade hygiene, but Devart does not say that an update normally erases connection settings. See the MySQL Studio upgrade guide.
Use the exact version and error to decide what to do next
- Find the revision history for the affected dbForge product and inspect entries around the upgrade date for connectivity, authentication, encryption, or host-compatibility fixes.
- Compare each note with your actual product, installed version, and error. A release note proves that a fix shipped for a described issue; it does not prove that your failure has that cause.
- If Test Connection still fails, retain the exact error text and relevant non-secret connection settings for Devart support.
When sharing diagnostic details, remove passwords, tokens, private keys, and any full connection string containing credentials. Without the product, version, host, database engine, and error text, no single cause or universal fix can be established.
