Start by identifying where Copilot is failing and which account you selected. A license-validation error in a Microsoft 365 web app, a sign-in loop on Microsoft Support, and an organization policy block have different causes—and different fixes. Check the steps below that match your exact screen rather than changing Edge settings or clearing browser data indiscriminately.
First, identify the Copilot surface and error
Note whether the problem occurs on the Copilot website, in the Copilot app, or inside a Microsoft 365 app such as Word or Excel. Record the full error and what happens next: does the page return to sign-in, report a license problem, or say your account cannot sign in that way?

Microsoft’s third-party-cookie instructions apply to Copilot license validation in Microsoft 365 web apps; they are not a general fix for every Copilot sign-in failure. Likewise, Microsoft’s documented redirect-loop guidance below is specifically about signing in to Microsoft Support.

Open the account or profile menu and confirm the identity shown. A personal Microsoft account and a work or school account are distinct. Use your personal account for personal use, and the organization-provided account for organizational services or files.

For Copilot inside a Microsoft 365 app, being signed in does not by itself establish that the account has the required Copilot license. Microsoft’s guidance on license-validation errors is at Copilot license validation errors. For account sign-in or recovery problems, use Microsoft’s sign-in helper.
If a Microsoft 365 web app reports a Copilot license error
For this specific web-app license-validation scenario, Microsoft advises checking Edge’s third-party-cookie setting. Its instructions say to ensure “Block third-party cookies” is Off.

- In Edge, open Settings and More (the three-dot menu), then select Settings.
- Go to Cookies and site permissions > Manage and delete cookies and site data.
- Check that Block third-party cookies is Off, as Microsoft specifies for this license-validation issue.
These steps are not a blanket recommendation for Copilot website or app sign-in problems. If the error persists, confirm the selected account and whether it has the required license; an organization administrator may need to check licensing or access.

If Edge keeps returning to the same sign-in page
Microsoft documents a sign-in loop for support.microsoft.com and its subdomains when authentication redirects back to the same page. Its Edge guidance concerns cookie sharing and trusted-site security-zone rules involving microsoft.com, support.microsoft.com and relevant subdomains, login.live.com, and login.microsoftonline.com. This guidance is about Microsoft Support sign-in; it does not establish the cause of every Copilot redirect loop. If your organization requires these sites in a trusted-site list, Microsoft says they should be handled consistently. On a managed device, ask your IT administrator before changing organization-controlled security-zone settings.
If a work or school account is blocked by policy
An “unable to sign in this way” message or a compliance error can indicate an organizational access policy rather than a problem with your password or Copilot itself. Some organizations require users to be signed in to Edge with their work or school account. If prompted, switch to the Edge profile associated with that account.

If the work profile is already in use and access remains blocked, contact your organization’s helpdesk or administrator. They can determine whether the account, device, tenant policy, or required license is preventing access. Microsoft’s work or school account guidance for Edge explains the profile requirement.
If the account itself may be the problem
When credentials or account status appear to be at fault, use Microsoft’s sign-in helper. Enter the email address or phone number used to sign in; the helper checks the details and provides next steps if it detects an issue. Microsoft’s general account sign-in guidance directs users who cannot sign in to this recovery path.

Don’t clear all browser data as a first step
Broadly deleting cookies or browsing data is not established as a universal Copilot sign-in fix. First match the error to the account, cookie, or organization-policy steps above. If you do decide to clear browser data because you have a specific browser-state issue, note that Microsoft warns deleting data while signed in and syncing can remove it from all synced devices.
