Start with ChromeOS’s built-in Diagnostics app, then check the network, charger, or resource use before considering repair or a reset. Settings labels and feature availability can vary by ChromeOS version and device-management policy.
Start with ChromeOS Diagnostics
On Chromebooks running ChromeOS 90 or later, the Diagnostics app can check connectivity, battery, CPU, and memory. Open the Launcher, search for Diagnostics, and select the app. If the app or a particular option is missing, your ChromeOS version or administrator policy may affect availability.

Google describes Diagnostics as a way to check for hardware and connection problems, including battery, CPU, memory, and Wi-Fi issues: Use Diagnostics to troubleshoot your issue. Use the relevant check for the symptom, make one change at a time, and test again.
Fix Chromebook Wi-Fi that will not connect or keeps dropping
Check the connection and run diagnostics
- Confirm Wi-Fi is turned on and select the network you intend to use. Check that you have the correct network credentials.
- Open Diagnostics and run its connectivity checks, if available.
- Restart the Chromebook, reconnect, and test whether the connection stays up. Google recommends testing after each troubleshooting step in its connection troubleshooting guide.
Find out whether the problem is the Chromebook or the network
When possible, connect the Chromebook to a different Wi-Fi network. Also try another device on the same network. If other devices have trouble too, the router or internet service may be involved; if the Chromebook fails on multiple networks while other devices work, the Chromebook or its settings are more likely suspects. This comparison is community troubleshooting advice, not an official Google support requirement.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
A wired connection can further isolate the wireless path: connect an Ethernet cable through a compatible USB Ethernet adapter, if your Chromebook supports one. Google lists ChromeOS-supported USB-C Ethernet adapters. This is a diagnostic test, not a repair for Wi-Fi. Check whether your device has USB-C or USB-A ports and confirm adapter compatibility before buying anything.
Check access restrictions
Captive portals, such as sign-in pages on guest networks, can interrupt access until you complete their prompts. School and work networks may also require approved devices or administrator-managed settings. If a managed Chromebook cannot join a network, ask the network administrator whether credentials, an allowlist, or policy is preventing access.

Fix a Chromebook that will not charge or loses battery quickly
If the Chromebook will not charge
- Check that the wall outlet works and that both ends of the charger are firmly connected.
- Unplug the charger from the wall and Chromebook, reconnect both ends, and check whether the charging indicator or battery status changes.
- Allow the Chromebook to charge for at least 30 minutes before escalating. These are steps in Google’s Chromebook charging troubleshooting guidance.
- Open Diagnostics and review battery information, including battery state, cycle count, electrical current, and the discharge test, where available. Google notes that a very low charge or discharge rate may point to a battery or charging-port problem.
If the issue continues, contact the Chromebook manufacturer or an approved repair provider. A charger or battery must match the exact Chromebook model; without the model number and a diagnosis, a replacement part cannot be safely recommended.
If battery life is unusually short
Look for Battery Saver in the battery or power settings and turn it on if available. Google says Battery Saver can lower display brightness, turn off keyboard backlight, enable Chrome Energy Saver or Android Battery Saver, and throttle CPU use. That can reduce energy use, but may also change display, app, or performance behavior.

- Intel Processor Up to 2.80GHz, 4GB DDR4, 128GB Storage
- 15" FHD IPS Display, Intel UHD Graphics
- 1x USB Type C, 1 x USB Type A, 1x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack, HDMI
- Fast WiFi and Bluetooth, Integrated Webcam
- Chrome OS, AC Charger Included, Pastel Silver
If battery life remains poor, use Diagnostics’ battery information and discharge test to help determine whether the issue is ordinary power use or a battery/charging fault. Persistent hardware symptoms warrant manufacturer support rather than guessing at a replacement part.
Fix a slow Chromebook, freezes, or tabs that reload
Check for updates and resource pressure
- Install available ChromeOS updates, then restart and see whether the problem persists. Google’s general troubleshooting guidance includes checking for updates.
- Open Diagnostics and review the CPU graph to see which applications are using processor time. Avoid starting with a CPU stress test for everyday slowness: the test itself can make the Chromebook run slowly while it is active.
- Close unused browser tabs, apps, and windows, then test again. If tabs keep reloading, press Shift + Esc to open Chrome Task Manager and inspect resource use.
- Disable extensions you do not need, especially if the slowdown began after installing one. If freezes or crashes began after adding an app or extension, remove the recent addition and check whether stability improves.
If memory or CPU tests fail, or freezes continue despite these steps, contact the manufacturer. A persistent hardware symptom is a better reason to seek repair support than to immediately erase the device.

Use a reset only after less disruptive steps
A factory reset (Powerwash) removes local user data, including files in Downloads. Back up or sync files first, and do not reset a school- or work-managed Chromebook without contacting its administrator. Google’s factory reset instructions explain the process and its data consequences.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRecovery is more severe and can also erase local files. Treat it as a later option, follow Google’s sequence for the specific problem, and back up first. For managed devices, the administrator should guide the reset or recovery process.
