Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If a Chromebook app stopped working after a ChromeOS update, first identify whether it is an Android app, a legacy Chrome app, or a Linux app. Then check the Chromebook’s model, ChromeOS version, and whether a work or school administrator manages it. The right fix depends on the app type: a Play Store loading problem calls for different steps than an “incompatible” message or a Linux app missing a hardware capability.
Start by identifying the failure
Before changing settings, note what happens and when. Does the app no longer appear in the Play Store, fail to install, crash on launch, or open but lack a feature? Identify its platform as well: Android apps come from Google Play, legacy Chrome apps are a separate app type, and Linux apps run in the Chromebook’s Linux development environment.

- Record the device: note the Chromebook model and ChromeOS version.
- Check management: if it belongs to work or school, an administrator may control app availability or Linux setup.
- Keep the error message: phrases such as “Your device is not compatible with this version” point toward app or device support, rather than a Play Store connection failure.
Check ChromeOS before troubleshooting the app
Open Settings > About ChromeOS to view the installed version and check for updates. ChromeOS downloads updates automatically when the Chromebook is connected; restart the device to complete an installation. If an update will not download, connect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet and try again. Update availability can vary by model and management policy, so check the device’s update schedule rather than assuming every Chromebook receives the same update.

If the Play Store will not load
A Play Store that fails to open or load is different from an app that opens the store but is reported as incompatible. For loading trouble, try these low-impact checks in order:
- Restart the Chromebook.
- Check that the internet connection works; switch to a reliable Wi-Fi network or Ethernet if available.
- Check for and install a ChromeOS update, then restart to finish it.

If an Android app is missing or says the device is incompatible
Google Play is available only on some Chromebooks, and app availability can also depend on the model. Google notes, “Not all Android apps work on Chromebooks.” An app developer may exclude Chromebook support, or the Chromebook may lack a feature the app requires, such as GPS. Installing updates will not add missing hardware or change the developer’s compatibility decision.
- If the Play Store itself is unavailable, check whether your Chromebook model supports Android apps.
- If other Play Store apps work but one app is missing or marked incompatible, contact that app’s developer about Chromebook and model support.
- If the Chromebook is managed, ask the administrator whether policy affects Play Store access or app installation.

If a Chrome app has stopped working
Chrome apps are on a staged end-of-support path. Google’s guidance lists separate scheduled milestones for user-installed apps and managed kiosk use; check its Chrome apps end-of-support schedule for the applicable dates and context. The dates are scheduled milestones, not a guarantee that a particular app will keep working until a specific day. On a work or school Chromebook, an administrator may control whether a legacy app remains available. If you rely on one, ask the administrator about its status and alternatives. Google recommends that developers move to modern web technologies.
If a Linux app fails after the transition
Linux apps run in a distinct development environment, and some capabilities are not supported there. Google lists cameras, Android emulators, and hardware acceleration among the limitations described for its Linux environment. If the app depends on one of these, updating packages may not resolve the underlying limitation.

Escalate only after lower-risk checks
For repeated crashes or broader Chromebook problems, test after each step so you can tell what changed. Google recommends restarting, closing apps and tabs, and removing recently installed apps or extensions before considering reset or recovery. See Fix Chromebook problems.
