If your iPhone has internet on Wi-Fi but not on cellular, first check that Cellular Data is on and that the affected app is allowed to use it. If the status bar says “SOS,” “No Service” or “Searching,” the phone is not connected to a cellular network: toggle Airplane Mode for at least 15 seconds, then restart if needed. Continue with the steps for your exact symptom before resetting network settings.
Start with the symptom
Check whether Wi-Fi works and what appears in the status bar. Working Wi-Fi alongside failed cellular internet points first to data settings or the app’s permission. “SOS,” “No Service” and “Searching” point to a network-connection problem. “Invalid SIM” or “No SIM” calls for a SIM, eSIM or carrier-settings check. A missing 5G icon is a separate issue; LTE may still provide cellular data.

If Wi-Fi works but cellular data does not
- Open Settings > Cellular (called Mobile Data in some regions or software versions) and turn on Cellular Data.
- On the same screen, find the affected app and make sure its cellular-data switch is on. iPhone can restrict cellular access app by app, so other apps may still work while one does not.
- If the connection works but is slow or limited, review any relevant cellular options, such as Data Roaming or Low Data Mode, and check your plan with the carrier before changing settings that could affect charges or usage.

If the iPhone says SOS, No Service or Searching
These labels mean the iPhone is not connected to a cellular network. Try a quick reconnect before changing other settings:

- Open Control Center or Settings and turn on Airplane Mode. Wait at least 15 seconds, then turn it off.
- If the phone still does not connect, restart the iPhone.
- Check that your intended cellular line is turned on. With two lines, verify that the line you expect to use for data is selected under Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data).
- If you are outside your usual coverage area or abroad, confirm coverage and roaming terms with your carrier. Data Roaming may be needed away from the home network, and charges may apply.
Ask the carrier to check for an outage, weak coverage, an inactive or restricted account, and plan or provisioning issues if the connection remains unavailable. Apple’s guidance for these status labels is in If you see SOS, No Service or Searching on your iPhone or iPad.
If you use Dual SIM or eSIM
Confirm that the intended line is present, switched on and selected for cellular data. The default line for calls or messages is not necessarily the line selected for data. If a line is missing or will not activate, the carrier may need to set up the eSIM or provide a SIM; eSIM eligibility and setup depend on the carrier and location.

If you have a physical SIM, reseat it only if your iPhone model has a SIM tray and you can do so safely. If the SIM is damaged or the phone still does not recognize it, ask the carrier to test or replace it. For dual-line issues, see Apple’s If Dual SIM with eSIM isn’t working on your iPhone.

- Check with your carrier that your cellular plan is active.
- Restart the iPhone.
- Open Settings > General > About and wait to see whether a carrier-settings update prompt appears.
- If your model has a physical SIM tray, remove and reseat the SIM if you can do so safely. If the alert remains, contact the carrier to test or replace the SIM. For an eSIM issue, contact the carrier for help with the line.

If 5G is missing or cellular data falls back to LTE
A missing 5G indicator does not by itself mean cellular data is broken. 5G availability depends on a compatible iPhone model, a carrier and plan that support 5G, and coverage at your current location. If any of those conditions is absent, LTE may be the available connection.
On supported iPhones, review Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data (wording can vary). With 5G Auto, iPhone can switch to LTE when 5G is not noticeably better for performance. If your model, plan and area support 5G but it remains unavailable, try the Airplane Mode reconnect steps above and ask the carrier to check the line or local network. Before resetting network settings
Use this only after checking the data switch, line, SIM or eSIM, plan and coverage. Reset Network Settings does not erase personal data or media, but it does remove previously used Wi-Fi networks and passwords and VPN settings not installed by a configuration profile or mobile-device-management system. Wi-Fi is turned off and back on, and cellular-data roaming may be turned off, so you may need to reconnect to Wi-Fi and restore network configuration.
- Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset > Reset Network Settings and confirm.
Apple lists the reset’s effects in Reset iPhone settings to their defaults.
When to contact your carrier or Apple
- Contact your carrier first for account status, plan eligibility, outages, coverage, roaming, SIM/eSIM activation or network provisioning. These checks depend on the provider and location.
- Arrange device service if the carrier confirms the account and network are working but suspects an iPhone hardware problem.
