Find the point where startup or the update fails before changing anything: a firmware boot-entry problem, a missing bootloader entry, a kernel or initramfs failure, and an interrupted pacman transaction need different repairs. Record the exact error, identify whether the machine uses UEFI or legacy BIOS and which bootloader it uses, then confirm the installed system’s actual root, /boot, and EFI System Partition (ESP) layout before reinstalling packages or editing boot files.
Start by identifying the failure stage
Write down the exact screen text and the last stage that worked. Note what changed just before the failure, including whether an update was interrupted. If the system still boots far enough to reach a console, record relevant pacman errors and timestamps. Do not start by reinstalling a bootloader or kernel: those actions can miss the cause, and writing files while the intended boot partition is unmounted can put them somewhere the firmware will not read.

- Firmware: The expected boot manager does not appear, or the machine returns to firmware setup.
- Bootloader: A boot manager opens, but an expected entry is missing or will not load.
- Kernel or initramfs: The entry starts loading Linux, but startup fails before the root filesystem is mounted.
- Package transaction: An update was interrupted, or pacman reports a download, database, or signature problem.
Before using live media, determine the firmware mode, bootloader, root filesystem, ESP and /boot mount points, and whether storage involves encryption, LVM, RAID, or Btrfs subvolumes. These details determine which partitions to unlock and mount. There is no safe universal mount command for every Arch-based installation.
Match the repair to the system
| What to establish | Why it changes the repair |
|---|---|
| Failure point: firmware, bootloader, kernel/initramfs, root mount, or userspace | It determines which configuration, logs, or package operation to inspect. |
| Firmware mode: UEFI or BIOS | Bootloader installation and firmware-entry checks differ. |
| Bootloader: systemd-boot, GRUB, or another option | Entry formats and repair commands are not interchangeable. |
ESP and /boot layout |
Kernels, initramfs images, and EFI programs must be present on the partitions the boot process reads. |
| Root-storage layout | Encryption, LVM, RAID, and subvolumes change how live media can access the installed system. |
| Update state and pacman log | An interrupted transaction calls for completing its affected package operations; a mirror or database error calls for investigating repository data and connectivity. |
ArchWiki’s procedures are written for Arch Linux. Arch-based distributions may use different defaults, package names, or recovery tools; verify the matching distribution’s guidance before applying them. No single bootloader or repair command is right for every installation.

If firmware does not start the expected boot manager
Check the firmware’s boot order and whether the expected UEFI boot entry still exists. If the system reaches an Arch environment, bootctl status can report systemd-boot and boot-entry state. First establish that the installed system actually uses systemd-boot; this command is not a general fix for GRUB or BIOS boot problems.
Do not run bootctl install blindly. Its installation location and handling of firmware variables depend on the booted environment and ESP path, and it may write an EFI fallback path. Confirm the intended ESP is mounted and that the chosen procedure matches the machine’s layout. Secure Boot can also prevent firmware from accepting an EFI binary that was newly installed or updated.

For systems using systemd-boot, its documented ESP search locations include /efi, /boot, and /boot/efi; custom mount locations require explicit paths. This behavior is version-sensitive. ArchWiki reports that, beginning with systemd 261.2-1, package upgrade handling marks systemd-boot-update.service for restart when an installed systemd-boot is detected, followed by a pacman hook. Check the installed systemd version and actual ESP mount rather than assuming this behavior or location.

If the bootloader opens but an entry is missing
systemd-boot
Inspect bootctl status, then check the entry’s syntax and every kernel and initramfs path it names. Confirm the files exist on the partition systemd-boot will read. systemd-boot loads EFI executables from its ESP or from a supported XBOOTLDR partition on the same physical disk; a file elsewhere on the system is not enough.

GRUB
Establish whether the installed system uses UEFI or BIOS and where that installation expects its generated configuration. ArchWiki gives this configuration-generation command:
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
Run it in the installed system’s correctly prepared arch-chroot, after mounting the actual boot filesystems. A casual shell chroot or a chroot that cannot see the required device paths can cause configuration generation to fail. The command regenerates configuration; it is not a universal replacement for installing or repairing GRUB itself.

If Linux cannot find the root device
For the literal error “Unable to find root device” after a kernel update, ArchWiki identifies a corrupted initramfs as a likely cause and recommends trying the fallback boot entry first, if one is available. If fallback startup also fails, use current Arch installation media and repair the installed system from there.
Recommended Free Tools
- Boot the live medium and identify the installed system’s storage layout, including encryption, LVM, RAID, Btrfs subvolumes, and separate boot partitions.
- Unlock or activate the required storage layers, then mount the installed root and its ESP or separate
/bootin the correct locations for that installation. - Enter the installed environment with
arch-chroot. - Reinstall the kernel and initramfs-generating packages appropriate to that installation. Reinstalling a kernel package normally regenerates its initramfs.
- Wait for the package operation and its hooks to finish before rebooting.
Check the mounts before step 4. If the ESP or separate /boot is not mounted, generated files may be written into the root filesystem’s ordinary directories instead of the partitions used during startup.

If a pacman update was interrupted
An interrupted upgrade can leave installed packages in an inconsistent state and make the system unbootable. ArchWiki’s recovery procedure is to use installation media, mount the installed filesystems, enter with arch-chroot, inspect the pacman log, and repeat the full affected transaction so package scriptlets and hooks can complete.
- Boot current Arch installation media and mount the target system’s root and boot partitions according to its layout.
- Enter the installation with
arch-chroot. - Inspect
/var/log/pacman.logand use the timestamps on the affected machine to identify the interrupted transaction and its package set. - Repeat the full affected upgrade transaction with
pacman -Syu, including the packages from that transaction, and let it finish. - Reboot only after the transaction and hooks complete successfully.
Do not copy an example package list or timestamp from another machine: use this installation’s log and the packages involved in its failed transaction. Replaying only one package can leave the rest of the transaction’s scriptlets or hooks unfinished.
If pacman reports “GPGME error: No data”
This message points to repository sync data or its delivery, not a bootloader problem. ArchWiki’s pacman troubleshooting guidance recommends checking whether the sync database files contain valid compressed data and examining the configured mirrors for the relevant repositories, including core and extra. A mirror, proxy, router, or other network component may be returning corrupted data or content that is not a repository database.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Check connectivity and whether the configured mirror is responding with repository data.
- Inspect the sync database files and mirror configuration rather than repeatedly retrying unchanged downloads.
- Investigate proxy or router behavior if repository responses are being altered or replaced.
- Distinguish this database/download failure from a package signature-verification error. Disabling signature checks is not a routine remedy.
When to switch to live recovery media
Use current Arch installation media or another suitable live environment when the installed system cannot boot or cannot complete the repair itself. Arch’s documented route uses installation media and arch-chroot. Before mounting anything, identify the real partitions and storage layers; an incorrect mount can make a repair ineffective or put generated files in the wrong place. If recovery media is not available, preparing bootable installation media is useful before attempting repairs.
