To troubleshoot blank screenshots in headless Chrome visual tests, first verify what Chrome loaded, then check capture timing and viewport dimensions, and finally confirm which Headless implementation and browser binary your test actually uses. A populated DOM with a blank image points toward rendering or capture—not necessarily missing page content.
1. Check whether Chrome loaded and populated the page
Run the same URL through Chrome’s --dump-dom option. It serializes the DOM after parsing and script execution, so it can reveal whether the application inserted content before the screenshot was taken. See the Chrome Headless command-line reference.

A nonempty DOM is useful evidence, but it does not prove that content painted successfully or that the screenshot command captured it. It narrows the problem: an empty or incomplete DOM suggests investigating navigation or application loading; a populated DOM with an empty-looking image points toward rendering, timing, or the capture path.
2. Check whether the screenshot is captured too early
Chrome’s CLI --timeout sets the maximum wait before screenshot capture, even if loading continues. If the application relies on timers or time-dependent code, --virtual-time-budget can fast-forward virtual time. These controls address different issues: one changes how long Chrome waits before capture; the other advances time for page code.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Use them as diagnostic controls, not universal readiness settings. Choose values based on the application’s actual render requirements, and consult the CLI documentation for the current syntax. A longer timeout cannot fix a page that never renders, and advancing virtual time is not a substitute for confirming the app’s intended ready state.
3. Make the viewport match the visual test
Set --window-size explicitly to the dimensions expected by the test. Chrome’s screenshot examples pair --screenshot with explicit window dimensions. Without a matching viewport, responsive layouts may render a different composition—or hide content—than the visual test expects. Check the Chrome CLI screenshot examples, and make sure the test and local reproduction use the same dimensions.

4. Verify which Headless Chrome you are running
“Headless Chrome” can refer to different implementations. Chrome 112 updated Headless so Chrome creates platform windows without displaying them. Chrome also documents a separate chrome-headless-shell. Current Headless runs the real Chrome browser and is suited to higher-fidelity end-to-end testing; the shell is lighter and can suit lightweight screenshotting or scraping. These distinctions are documented in Chrome’s pages on Headless mode and the Headless Chrome shell.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen local and CI screenshots differ, record the browser binary, version, and mode for each run. A comparison is not meaningful if one environment uses current Headless and the other uses the shell, or if they run different Chrome versions. Choose the mode that matches the browser path your test is intended to represent; use the shell’s smaller dependency footprint only when that trade-off fits the task.

5. Inspect scripted runs through browser communication
If a test drives Chrome programmatically, inspect browser logs and the DevTools Protocol communication. Chrome’s shell documentation points to DevTools Protocol debugging for programmatic Headless use. Check whether navigation completed, rendering proceeded, and the screenshot command was actually issued as expected.
6. Remove outdated environment assumptions
Do not add flags just because an old CI recipe includes them. Chrome says --disable-gpu is only needed on Windows as a temporary workaround, and Headless does not require Xvfb. Verify guidance against the Chrome version and platform in use; the Headless shell documentation covers these platform notes.

7. Isolate the failure with a controlled comparison
Chrome’s documentation establishes useful diagnostic controls, but it does not establish one universal cause for blank screenshots. If the DOM contains content and the image is still blank, compare a minimal page against the application using the same browser binary, viewport, and capture path. Change one variable at a time—such as timing, viewport, or browser mode—so each run can show whether that change affected the result. This controlled comparison is a practical diagnostic recommendation based on the documented controls, not a procedure prescribed by Chrome.
