That tells you whether to focus on a mod or report a possible base-game problem. The steps differ for mods installed through the in-game manager and third-party PC mods.
Start by identifying the failure
Before changing files, record the platform, game build, mod manager, where each mod came from, and what happens. Useful symptoms include a launch crash, a save that stops loading at a percentage, missing or overlapping UI, texture or shader problems, or appearance issues during character creation. These are among the mod-related problems Larian describes in its Mod Issues support guide.

Check the game’s installed version and whether the mod author has released an update for it. A game patch can change how a mod or its dependencies behave; don’t assume compatibility just because the mod worked before.

- Open Baldur’s Gate 3’s in-game Mod Manager and go to Installed. If an Update button appears for a mod, use it.
- Read the mod’s description for required companion mods or settings, and check its listing for the author’s latest compatibility information.
- Uncheck the installed mods and retry the action that failed, such as loading the save or opening the game.
- If the problem stops with mods disabled, re-enable them in small groups to narrow down which one is involved. Contact that mod’s author through its listing and include the game version and the exact symptom.
- If the same problem continues with mods disabled, report it to Larian as a possible base-game issue.
Larian distinguishes its supported in-game mod system from player-created mods; it cannot directly manage or fix third-party mod content. See Official Mod Support for the in-game update and multiplayer workflow.

Check third-party PC mod files after a major update
If third-party mods are installed, disabling them in a manager may not remove every file the game can see. Larian advises removing existing mod files when launch or in-game problems occur. Back up saves and any configuration you want to preserve before deleting files.
- In the game installation’s
Datafolder, check forModsandPublicfolders. Larian says these folders, if present, are safe to delete for this cleanup. - Check
%LocalAppData%Larian StudiosBaldur's Gate 3Modsfor third-party mod files. - If you are using an older profile rather than a new one for the current patch, Larian says you may also delete
modsettings.lsx.
Use the altered-files log if the launcher reports data mismatches. Larian says it lists unexpected files in the installation and Mods folders. Look in %LocalAppData%Larian StudiosLauncherCache for steam_<Current.Version.Number>_alteredFiles.txt; GOG uses a corresponding galaxy_... filename. Details are in Larian’s Mod Issues guide.
Look for an older Documents profile
Baldur’s Gate 3 uses local AppData rather than Documents. However, Larian says that if the game’s AppData folder does not exist and a game folder does exist in Documents, the old profiles and configuration may be copied into AppData when the game starts. That can bring old mod files along, so check for this older location if the files you expect to find in AppData are missing.

- In BG3 Mod Manager, refresh campaign mod data if needed, select the Public profile, and arrange the active mods.
- Choose Export Load Order to Game to write the order to
modsettings.lsx.
Keep the Mods directory free of subfolders: the manager’s maintainer warns that subfolders can cause the game to reset modsettings.lsx. If the file resets on launch, an erroring mod may be responsible.
Make multiplayer mod lists match
Every player needs the same mods at the same versions. When the verification window appears, use its offered download, enable, update, or downgrade actions to match the save or session. Check Larian’s Community Update #29: Playing with Mods for the matching workflow and mod-description guidance.

Choose the right support route
- The issue disappears when mods are disabled: contact the relevant mod author with the symptom and game build.
- The issue remains with mods disabled: report it to Larian as a possible base-game problem.
- A third-party PC install still fails at launch after cleanup: review the altered-files log and contact Larian support if the problem remains.
Larian’s latest listed update in the sources here is Hotfix #36, dated March 26, 2026, for version 4.1.1.7209685. Patch 8 was announced as the final major content update, but Larian said minor bug-fixing updates would continue. Check your installed build and each mod’s latest release rather than treating any patch as a compatibility guarantee.
