Start with the exact MediaLive alert. Alert 6018 means MediaLive could not connect to its configured RTMP endpoint; it does not, by itself, mean YouTube rejected the video or audio settings. First check the destination, protocol, port, and current YouTube stream key. If the connection succeeds but YouTube reports stream-health errors, troubleshoot codec and encoding settings separately.
Separate a connection failure from a YouTube ingest error
MediaLive alert 6018 means the channel is configured to send RTMP output but could not connect to its endpoint, according to the AWS Elemental MediaLive alert list. Begin with the destination and connection details rather than changing bitrate or resolution.

After MediaLive connects, YouTube Live Control Room can report a different class of problem: an incoming stream that does not meet its format, bitrate, frame-rate, keyframe, or audio/video requirements. Check YouTube’s specific stream-health message before changing the MediaLive encode; connection errors and ingest-compatibility errors point to different parts of the path.

Read the exact MediaLive alert and identify the output
Confirm whether the alert is 6018, which identifies failure to connect to an RTMP endpoint, or another output alert such as a failed write. Record the affected output and destination before editing the channel. AWS lists distinct alerts for different output symptoms in its MediaLive alert documentation.

Compare every destination field with YouTube Live Control Room
Check the protocol (RTMP or RTMPS), server address, port, application name, stream name or key, and any username or password required by the destination. AWS says the operator and downstream system must agree on the destination details for each RTMP output. Use the values for the current YouTube stream, not a URL or key copied from an older event. See AWS’s RTMP destination guidance.
Also verify the destination count against the channel pipeline configuration: AWS specifies two destinations for a standard channel and one for a single-pipeline channel. A mismatch can leave an output pointed at an incomplete or incorrect destination setup.

Refresh and protect the YouTube stream key
In YouTube Live Control Room, retrieve the stream key intended for this broadcast and update the MediaLive destination with the matching current value. If the key may have been exposed or compromised, reset it in YouTube and replace it in MediaLive. YouTube’s guidance covers both an encoder-start error and resetting a stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not share it in screenshots, logs, tickets, or public examples.

Check RTMPS, certificate errors, and timeouts
YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingest. For an error saying the RTMP server sent an invalid SSL certificate, verify that the destination uses RTMPS and the correct server. If needed, YouTube’s guidance says to specify port 443. For a connection timeout, check that the URL is correct and that the encoder supports RTMPS. Follow YouTube’s steps for RTMPS errors and connection timeouts.

Use YouTube’s stream-health messages after connection
Once a stream reaches YouTube, open Live Control Room and read the actual error and severity. YouTube identifies problems including unsupported audio or video formats, bitrate, sample rate, too many audio or video streams, channel count, interlaced video, resolution, frame rate, keyframe frequency, and primary/backup mismatches. Use the listed message to choose what to change rather than changing several encoder settings at once. See YouTube Live error messages.

Investigate outbound network reachability
If the destination and credentials match but MediaLive still cannot connect, check the network path from the AWS channel to the configured endpoint and whether the endpoint is available. YouTube recommends testing outbound internet connectivity when the encoder’s local output looks and sounds healthy. In AWS, use the actual alert and available channel operational metrics to determine where delivery stops. There is no single firewall rule that fits every account and network path, so confirm the requirements for your deployment rather than opening arbitrary ports.

Test before the event, then monitor live
Run a test with audio and motion similar to the planned broadcast. Confirm that YouTube receives the stream and shows healthy status, then monitor Live Control Room messages during the event. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health; its live encoder settings guidance also explains the settings to verify.

Verify encoding only when YouTube receives the stream
Encoding changes are relevant when YouTube’s ingest checks report a format or stream-health problem, not as the first response to MediaLive alert 6018. YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS protocols; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds.

The bitrate figures are YouTube’s recommendations for the stated H.264 resolution and frame-rate combinations. They are not a diagnosis for an endpoint connection failure; follow the stream-health message and settings guidance for the codec and resolution actually selected.
Match primary and backup stream settings
If using primary and backup streams, YouTube requires matching settings for failover. Compare resolution, codec, interlacing, profile, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe frequency, audio sample rate, channel count, and audio codec. YouTube lists these as potential causes of primary/backup mismatch errors in its Live error messages.
