First identify which audio has stopped: your microphone, the sound coming from the call, or other audio such as music and video. Then check mute controls and the selected audio devices before changing permissions or platform settings. The right fix depends on which audio path is affected and whether the problem happens in one app or across several.
Identify what is being muted
During a test call, distinguish among these symptoms:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Others cannot hear you: Check the app’s microphone mute control, any physical mute switch, the selected input device, and microphone access permission.
- You cannot hear call participants: Check the app’s selected speaker or output device, the system volume, and the headset connection.
- Music, video, or other non-call audio pauses: Check whether the call app or headset is changing how competing audio is handled. This is different from a microphone permission problem.
Also note whether the issue happens in only one app or in multiple apps, and whether it starts when you connect a particular headset. Those clues help narrow the cause without changing several settings at once.

Start with checks that apply to any calling app
- Check mute controls. Confirm that you are not muted in the call and that the headset’s physical mute button or switch is off.
- Check the chosen devices. In the call app, select the microphone and speaker you intend to use. Raise the computer or phone volume and check its sound settings or volume mixer as well.
- Run the app’s audio test. Use its microphone and speaker test or test-call feature, if available. Recording a short voice message and playing it back can also help determine whether the microphone is capturing sound.
- Check device access. If the microphone is missing or silent, confirm that the operating system allows the app to use it. Reconnect the device if it does not appear in the app’s device list.
- Test another audio route. Try the built-in microphone and speakers, or a different headset. Change one thing at a time and repeat the test so you can tell which change matters.
For desktop Zoom, its support guidance recommends checking device connections and notes that supported USB audio devices are less likely to encounter audio issues. A wired USB headset with a microphone can be a useful diagnostic alternative when Bluetooth or the current headset appears to be involved; it will not fix a muted control, missing microphone permission, or incorrect software routing. If the problem starts with Bluetooth
Temporarily pause or close other apps playing audio, then retest the call. Zoom documents a specific Bluetooth behavior: if another app—for example, an incoming phone call or music-streaming app—plays audio during a Zoom meeting, Zoom may stop meeting audio and try to mute. Zoom recommends pausing or closing those other audio apps. This describes a documented Zoom case; it is not a universal explanation for every calling app.
If that does not help, disconnect the headphones from other paired devices, then reconnect or pair them again and test once more. Zoom Support, Using Bluetooth headphones with Zoom
Check the settings for your calling app
Zoom
In the desktop app, check the meeting mute control and the headset’s physical mute switch. Open Zoom’s audio settings, choose the intended speaker and microphone, adjust their levels, and test both. If a device is absent, check microphone access permissions and its connection. If Bluetooth audio is interrupted when another app plays sound, follow the Bluetooth checks above.

Microsoft also documents a narrower issue on macOS: unclear participant audio or missing Teams notification sounds can be related to audio processing. Its guidance says administrators can restart coreaudiod; other users can restart the Mac. Use this only for that documented Teams/macOS symptom, not as a general first troubleshooting step. Use the results to isolate the cause
- Only one app is affected: Recheck its input and output choices, mute state, and permissions. Then update or restart the app before considering a reinstall.
- Several apps are affected: Check operating-system sound settings, the selected device, volume mixer, microphone privacy permission, headset connection, and audio drivers.
- Only Bluetooth is affected: Test with other audio apps paused, disconnect the headset from other paired devices, and compare with the built-in audio or another headset.
- A different headset works: The original headset or its connection is implicated, but this test alone does not identify the exact fault.
Zoom’s general audio guidance also recommends checking for driver updates, updating the app and operating system, and restarting the browser or device. Apply these after the basic routing and permission checks, especially if the problem affects more than one app. Zoom: Troubleshooting audio issues
When the issue persists
If the fault remains confined to one app after checking devices and permissions, restart or update that app and consult its official support options. For a useful support report, note the app and operating-system versions, whether you are using desktop, mobile, or a browser, the selected microphone and speaker, and whether the symptom changes with another device.
