If Apple TV 4K will not finish setup, join Wi‑Fi, or show a stable picture, start by checking power, the HDMI connection, and the selected TV input. Then follow the steps for the specific symptom: a stuck setup screen, a network error, a black or flickering picture, or no power.
Set up Apple TV 4K
Connect Apple TV to power and to your television or display with an HDMI cable, turn on the display, and select the HDMI input that matches the port you used. Apple’s setup instructions describe the basic connection and onscreen setup. For 4K HDR, Apple specifies an HDMI 2.0-or-later compatible cable; HDMI 2.1 is needed to access all Apple TV features. Check your television or receiver’s manual if you are unsure which port supports the video formats you want.

Choose one of the two onscreen setup routes:

If setup is stuck or will not continue
- Disconnect Apple TV from power, reconnect it, and try the setup screen again. Apple recommends this restart when setup does not proceed.
- If it remains stuck at a setup screen, try a different Wi‑Fi network, such as a personal hotspot. Once setup is complete, open Settings and join your home Wi‑Fi network. Follow Apple’s setup troubleshooting steps.
If Apple TV will not connect to Wi‑Fi
Work through the network checks in order. They help distinguish a saved-password problem from an issue with the router, signal, or Apple TV’s connection.
- On Apple TV, open Settings > Network, select your Wi‑Fi network, and enter its password again. If the password is rejected or the connection still fails, select that network and choose Forget Network, then join it again.
- Confirm that the router is powered and connected to the modem. For signal testing, Apple advises keeping Apple TV and the router in the same room if possible, but not placing Apple TV directly on or within 30 cm of the router. Avoid obstructions, especially metal. See Apple’s Wi‑Fi troubleshooting guidance.
- Restart Apple TV from Settings > System > Restart. Then unplug the router and modem, reconnect them, and allow them to restart.
- If your Apple TV model has an Ethernet port, connect it to the router or modem temporarily. Wired Ethernet can get Apple TV online so you can check Settings > System > Software Updates. Apple says Ethernet takes precedence over Wi‑Fi while connected; disconnect the cable before trying Wi‑Fi again.
If the screen is black, flickering, or losing the picture
Check the HDMI signal path
- Make sure Apple TV is powered on and reseat the HDMI cable at both ends.
- Confirm that the television is set to the input for the port connected to Apple TV.
- Try another HDMI port on the television, then test with another cable if available. Apple identifies Premium High Speed HDMI for HDMI 2.0 and Ultra High Speed HDMI for HDMI 2.1 in its black-screen troubleshooting guidance. A replacement cable is worth considering only if these checks point to the cable or if the existing one does not meet the format requirements you need.
- If Apple TV is connected through an HDMI switch or AV receiver, connect it directly to the television. If the direct connection works, investigate the intermediary, its ports, and its settings.
Try a different resolution
If the connections are secure but the picture remains blank, use the Apple TV remote to cycle video resolutions: hold Menu and Volume Down for five seconds. Apple TV changes to another resolution every 20 seconds; choose OK when a working picture appears, or Cancel to stop. Account for format changes during playback
A brief blank or flicker when playback starts or stops can occur while the television changes video formats. If it is disruptive, open Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content and review Match Dynamic Range and Match Frame Rate. The available behavior can depend on the Apple TV and display; consult the display manual if its HDMI capabilities are unclear.

- Unplug the Apple TV power cable for 30 seconds, then reconnect it.
- Try a different wall outlet or power strip. If available, test another Apple TV power cord.
- If it still will not turn on after these checks, Apple says service may be needed. See its troubleshooting and service guidance.
Apple’s support flows cover Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD, but they do not establish that every generation, television port, receiver, or switch has the same capabilities. When a connection works directly but not through other equipment—or a particular video mode is unavailable—check the manuals for those specific devices.
