Protecting a game’s source code and build files takes several layers: limit who and what can access them, secure developer workstations and CI/CD systems, keep credentials out of code and logs, verify build inputs, and restrict access to release artifacts. No single control prevents every leak; the goal is to reduce exposure and make suspicious access or changes easier to detect and contain.
What needs protection
Protect more than the main game repository. Build scripts, pipeline definitions, project configuration, plugins, credentials, signing materials, and unreleased packages can expose intellectual property or give someone the ability to alter a release. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) describes software protection as preventing unauthorized access and tampering; its guidance applies to code, configuration, and the systems that handle them.

Developer workstations and CI/CD services are part of that boundary. They may contain local source copies, credentials, signing access, or other sensitive project data. NIST identifies malware, social engineering, network attacks, and physical attacks as possible software supply-chain vectors. [NIST SP 800-204D]
Limit access to repositories and build configuration
Give people and automation only the access needed for their work. Restrict write and administrative permissions more tightly than read access, and review access for organizations, teams, service accounts, and automation tokens. Remove or update access promptly when a person changes roles or leaves.

Apply the same discipline to pipeline definitions and configuration-as-code as to the game’s primary source. Someone who can change a build script may be able to expose files, access credentials, or change what gets packaged. NIST’s DevSecOps practices state: “Store all forms of code – including source code, executable code, and configuration as code – based on the principle of least privilege so that only authorized personnel, tools, and services have access.” [NIST NCCoE DevSecOps practices]
Use multifactor authentication (MFA) for source-control, cloud, build, and package-registry accounts wherever supported. A FIDO2 security key is one possible authenticator, but check that each service supports the key you choose; MFA strengthens account access, but does not prevent every kind of code leak. NIST identifies MFA and conditional access among safeguards for development environments. [NIST SP 800-204D]
Secure developer workstations
A workstation with a local source checkout or access to signing materials is a sensitive asset, even if the canonical repository is well protected. Choose endpoint controls to fit the studio’s threat model and device-management capabilities. NIST’s guidance identifies endpoint protection, network controls, access policies, MFA, encryption, and data-loss prevention as possible safeguards; it does not prescribe one universal workstation setup.

- Use managed devices for sensitive development where practical, and keep work accounts separate from personal accounts.
- Encrypt device storage, apply security updates, and limit local administrator privileges.
- Use endpoint protection and access policies appropriate to the studio’s environment.
- Consider network controls and data-loss prevention where they fit the workflow.
These measures reduce opportunities for unauthorized access, but they should be selected and maintained as a coordinated workstation policy rather than treated as a guarantee against leaks. [NIST SP 800-204D]
Keep secrets out of repositories and CI logs
Do not commit API keys, access tokens, passwords, signing keys, or private certificates. Store secrets in a managed secret store or the CI platform’s protected secret facility, and grant each job only the credentials it needs. Configure builds and scripts not to print secret values in logs.
Automate secret scanning in repositories and CI so accidental exposures can be detected early. CISA recommends protecting build-pipeline secrets, avoiding plaintext secrets in code and sensitive log output, and rotating secrets regularly. NIST’s DevSecOps scenarios also demonstrate automated scanning before a build. [CISA, Securing the Software Supply Chain] [NIST NCCoE DevSecOps practices]

If a credential is exposed
- Revoke the exposed credential and issue a replacement; deleting the visible file does not invalidate the credential.
- Check audit logs and systems associated with the credential for suspicious use.
- Identify where copies may remain, including repository forks, backups, and CI logs, and remediate them where possible.
- Assess the scope of access and whether related credentials, repositories, jobs, or artifacts may also be affected.
Credential material can persist in copies even after a file is removed from the current repository. GitHub’s documentation advises revocation, replacement, remediation, and assessment of the potential breach scope. [GitHub: Secret leakage risks]

Build isolation can be strengthened by limiting or preventing network access while build steps run. CISA describes hermetic builds as an advanced mitigation and recommends reproducible builds as a way to compare outputs generated from identical inputs. These approaches require engineering work and may not fit every engine or workflow; they complement rather than replace access controls for repositories and build services.

Prepare to respond to a suspected leak
Define a response path before an incident so the studio can contain access while investigating what happened. Preserve relevant logs, restrict or disable affected accounts and tokens, and identify the repositories, build jobs, artifacts, and downstream systems they could reach. Rotate compromised credentials and determine whether distribution or signing access was affected before restoring normal access.
Coordinate communication through the studio’s established incident process. Notification duties depend on the incident’s facts, jurisdiction, and contractual obligations; these controls do not determine those requirements. For credential exposure, follow the revoke, replace, remediate, and assess-scope steps described in GitHub’s secret-leakage guidance.
Choosing controls for your studio
When evaluating a security tool or approach, compare it against the asset and the failure mode it addresses rather than treating product categories as interchangeable.
- Asset: Does it protect repositories, workstations, pipeline secrets, build services, or artifacts?
- Security function: Does it prevent access, detect an exposure, or verify integrity and origin?
- Access model: Which human, service, and automation identities can it support, and how are permissions reviewed?
- Operations: How are logs, alerts, credential rotation, and incident response handled?
- Workflow fit: Can the control work with the studio’s engine, toolchain, and build process without creating unmanaged exceptions?
The cited guidance establishes these control areas, not a vendor ranking or a tested product comparison. Choose based on the studio’s actual assets, access paths, and ability to operate the controls consistently.
