If your phone acts up after an Android Quarterly Platform Release (QPR), first record its model, Android version, build number, security patch level, Google Play system update level and exact error. Then restart once, check power, Wi-Fi and storage, and use the device maker’s guidance before attempting a reset or firmware flash. A problem that appears after a QPR is not necessarily caused by it; the steps below help separate normal setup from an update failure and identify when Pixel-only recovery applies.
Identify the device, update and error first
Before changing settings, note the phone or tablet model and whether it is a Google Pixel. In Settings, look under About phone or About tablet and Android version for the Android version, build number, security patch level and Google Play system update level. Menu names can vary by manufacturer. Google’s Android version and update guide explains where to find these details.

Also record the exact error text and whether the QPR is a public, stable release or a beta. Check Settings > System > Software updates, or the equivalent menu from your manufacturer, to see which updates are pending. The operating-system update, security patch and Google Play system update are separate items; an error for one does not establish that the others failed.
Update timing depends on the device, manufacturer and carrier. On Pixel, a downloaded Android update installs in the background and becomes active the next time you restart. Until that restart, the new build may not yet be active; that alone does not mean installation failed. See Google’s Pixel update guidance.

My phone is stuck after an Android update. What should I try first?
- Save the current details. Write down the error, build number and update levels before troubleshooting, so you can describe exactly what happened to support.
- Restart the phone once. A restart is a basic troubleshooting step and is needed for a downloaded Pixel update to become active.
- Check power, connection and free space. Google recommends Wi-Fi and at least 75% battery before updating. If the phone reports insufficient storage, follow its maker’s instructions to free space. Google says a phone can start having issues when less than 10% of its storage is free; this is a general troubleshooting threshold, not a QPR-specific failure rate. - Check for app updates. Update apps through Google Play. If the problem is freezing, crashing or slow response, test Safe Mode using your device maker’s instructions. Safe Mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. If the symptom stops, remove recently installed apps one at a time, restarting and checking after each removal.
- Use the right support channel. For a non-Pixel device, contact its manufacturer or carrier if these general checks do not help; update menus, eligibility, rollout and recovery procedures vary. Pixel owners can use Google’s Pixel support options.
The update says it failed to install. Should I try again?
First establish whether the download completed and whether the message concerns the Android update or a separate security or Google Play system update. If an Android download did not finish, Google says the device will automatically try again over the next few days and notify you when the update is available again. Follow the notification and on-screen instructions rather than manually installing an unrelated build. If the retry fails again, capture the new message and contact the manufacturer or carrier; Pixel owners can contact Google support.
A Google Pixel Community Manager documented a specific historical example on July 29, 2025: some devices running Android 16 and Android 16 beta could not install the latest Google Play system update and displayed “Failed to update.” The announcement said affected users did not need to factory reset while a fix was being rolled out. This was a release-specific issue at that time; it does not establish that the issue remains active or explains a different QPR symptom. Read the announcement.

Why is my phone battery draining after the update?
Google says a Pixel battery normally uses more power than usual after a software update while the phone downloads, optimizes and sets up software. That makes temporary extra drain possible, but does not prove that a QPR caused sustained or severe drain. If it continues, review app behavior, available storage and pending system or app updates. If the drain remains severe or interferes with use, contact the device maker or, for Pixel, Google support.

My Pixel won’t start after a QPR beta update. Can I recover it without wiping my data?
Google provides official Pixel OTA images and recovery instructions for supported devices, including a route for a device that received a QPR beta OTA and then would not start. Use the instructions for the exact Android release and supported Pixel model; do not select a random image or apply this Pixel procedure to another brand. Google distinguishes recovering a device from simply installing a beta for testing. Start with the Pixel OTA images for Android 16 QPR3 and follow the applicable recovery instructions there.
Data loss depends on the method. Google warns that flashing a factory image requires a full reset, and moving from beta back to a public build can erase all user data. Back up first if the device is usable and a reset is not already required by the procedure. Google recommends the Android Flash Tool for QPR beta testing; its enrollment guidance says most users do not need a full data reset just to install an Android 16 QPR beta, but recommends backing up before enrollment. Should I factory reset my Android phone after an update?
No—not as an early response to a slow download, a single update error or a phone that needs a restart. Google places factory data reset in advanced troubleshooting. A reset removes data from the phone, uninstalls apps and deletes their associated data, so back up before proceeding. If a downloaded app contributed to the problem, restoring that app may bring the symptom back. Follow the device maker’s instructions, and reset only after less destructive checks fail or the official recovery procedure requires it.
