If problems started after you upgraded to a new Windows 11 version, check Settings > System > Recovery > Go back as soon as possible. Microsoft says the option is available in most cases for 10 days after an upgrade, provided the required previous-version files are still present. Back up important files first, and have your BitLocker recovery key ready if encryption is enabled.
Before you start: protect your files and check eligibility
Go back is meant to return a PC to the Windows version it ran before a feature upgrade. It is not an indefinite restore point: Microsoft says the previous version is automatically deleted after 10 days, and the Go back option may be unavailable even within that period.

- Back up important files. Microsoft warns that recovery choices can result in data loss.
- Locate your BitLocker recovery key if encryption is enabled. Microsoft says the key is needed for most recovery options launched from the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), especially if Windows cannot start.
- Keep the upgrade files. Microsoft lists the
windows.oldand$windows.~btfolders as prerequisites for going back. - Account for changes since the upgrade. Microsoft lists removing user accounts added after the upgrade as a prerequisite. If you used USB media to perform the upgrade, have that same USB drive available.
Do not delete Previous version of Windows from Storage temporary files while you might still want to return. Deleting the previous Windows installation removes Windows.old; once it is gone, going back cannot be undone.

- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Under recovery options, select Go back if it appears.
- Follow the prompts. Windows asks for a reason, then guides you through the return to the previous version.
If Go back is not shown, Windows does not currently offer this rollback path on that PC. The option depends on the upgrade window and the retained previous-version files; do not assume it can be enabled by buying or creating a USB drive.

What going back keeps and removes
Microsoft says personal files are kept, but Go back removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses Settings changes made since then. Apps added, removed, or updated after upgrading may be unavailable or may not work properly after the return. Back up first rather than treating the personal-file safeguard as a substitute for a backup.
Is the problem from a feature upgrade or a recent update?
Choose the recovery route based on what changed immediately before the problem began. A feature upgrade installs a new Windows version; a recent update is a smaller update installed through Windows Update. They have separate removal controls.
| What happened | Windows starts? | Recovery route |
|---|---|---|
| Problems began after upgrading to a new Windows version | Yes | Settings > System > Recovery > Go back, if available |
| Problems began after a recent Windows update | Yes | Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates; some updates cannot be removed |
| Problems began after a recent update and Windows will not start | No | Enter WinRE and choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates |
Uninstalling a recent update does not return the PC to its previous feature version. Microsoft documents the feature-version rollback separately from the update-uninstall route.

If Go back is missing or does not fix the problem
Check whether the 10-day period has passed or the previous-version files were removed. If either applies, Go back may no longer be available. Microsoft lists System Restore, Reset this PC, recovery media, and reinstalling Windows as other recovery choices, but they are not equivalent to Go back and can have broader effects. Review Microsoft’s instructions and back up before choosing one.
If Windows will not boot, recovery options may be available through WinRE; BitLocker can require the recovery key before those options can be used. If the PC is managed by your workplace or school and the available recovery options do not resolve the issue, contact your organization’s IT department.
