If your Atari 800XL powers on but shows no picture, start with the TV or monitor input, cable connections, and the computer’s two video-output paths. A blank screen alone cannot identify a failed chip. Work through external checks first; use the built-in self-test only if a picture becomes visible.
Start with the display and cable
- Choose the connected input. Confirm the TV or monitor is set to the input used by the Atari, whether that is an RF antenna input or a composite-video input.
- Reseat and inspect the connections. Disconnect and reconnect the cable at both ends. Look for visible damage, loose plugs, or a connector that does not fit securely.
- Try another compatible display or cable if available. Changing one part of the setup at a time can show whether the symptom follows the display path. A secondary troubleshooting guide recommends checking the selected input and cable before considering internal faults (secondary troubleshooting guide).
Compare the 800XL’s two video-output paths
The 800XL has an RF output for a television and a 5-pin DIN monitor jack. Atari’s field service manual documents composite video, composite luminance, and audio on the monitor jack (Atari field service manual, Rev. 02 (1985)).

- If you are using RF: test the monitor jack with a known-compatible cable and display, if available.
- If you are using the monitor jack: try RF with suitable television equipment, if available.
A picture on one path but not the other points toward a problem somewhere in the path that failed—such as its cable, connection, or display input. It does not, on its own, identify a failed component inside the computer. When testing a DIN cable, verify its pinout and compatibility with both the 800XL and the display; the manual describes the interface but does not validate current retail cables.
Check the power light and supply
If the power light is off
Before opening the computer, check that the external power supply is connected and that its plug and cable are intact. Atari’s service manual lists the power LED, power supply, and cables among possible causes of a “No Power Light” symptom. It specifies an external supply rated at +5 VDC ±2%, maximum 1.2 A (Atari field service manual, Rev. 02 (1985)). Use only a supply that meets the requirements for your specific unit and has the correct connector; the rating is not permission to try an arbitrary adapter.

If the power light is on
A lit power indicator confirms only that the indicator is illuminated; it does not establish that the computer is starting correctly or that video is reaching the display. Continue with the output-path checks rather than treating the light as proof of a particular internal condition.
Use the self-test if the screen becomes visible
The built-in self-test is useful only when you can see its menu. Remove any cartridge, hold OPTION while powering on, then use SELECT and START to choose a test, as described in Atari’s manual (Atari field service manual, Rev. 02 (1985)).
- Memory test: checks RAM, ROM, and ANTIC.
- Audio/visual test: involves ANTIC, GTIA, and POKEY.
- Keyboard test: checks keyboard operation.
If the screen stays completely blank, you cannot see or select the menu, so this test cannot resolve that no-picture case.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat a blank, black, or grey screen can—and cannot—tell you
Atari’s symptom checklist associates black or grey screens with several possible causes, including the power supply, a damaged RF cable, open or shorted components on supply rails, shorted LSI or other ICs, and clock-circuit components (Atari field service manual, Rev. 02 (1985)). These possibilities overlap. A blank screen is not enough evidence to name a failed chip or justify swapping parts.

Use what you can observe to narrow the next step: whether the power light is on, whether the display is blank or shows snow or color, and whether the other output path produces a picture. Those observations help separate setup and output-path problems from a broader startup fault, but they are not a component-level diagnosis.

If input, cable, and alternate-output checks do not restore a picture, internal diagnosis may be needed. Atari’s field service manual is a technician-oriented reference with schematics, symptom diagnosis, and testing procedures. Board-level work should account for the 800XL board revision and regional schematic differences; the preserved manual records note that regional schematic additions exist (Atari field service manual, Rev. 02 (1985); preserved Rev. 01 record).

Unless you have the service skills and equipment for that work, stop at the external checks and consult a vintage-computer repair technician. The manual also names specialist diagnostic tools, but those references do not establish current availability or suitability for a particular machine.
