If your WordPress site breaks after an update, first record the exact error and what changed, then restore access using Recovery Mode or by isolating the suspect plugin or theme. Avoid making several changes at once. Once the site is accessible, decide whether to repair the affected component or restore a suitable backup, then test key pages and workflows before trying updates again.
Start by identifying the failure
Before changing files or settings, note which update ran—WordPress core, a plugin, a theme, or PHP—and when the problem began. Record the exact message, the pages or functions affected, and whether the public site, the dashboard, or both are unavailable. Keep any WordPress error email and relevant hosting logs; they may identify the failing component.

Change one thing at a time. If several plugins, themes, or server settings are changed together, it becomes harder to determine what actually caused or fixed the problem.
Use Recovery Mode for a WordPress fatal error
For certain fatal PHP errors during a regular page load, WordPress can send the site administrator a Recovery Mode email with a special login link and error details. Recovery Mode was introduced in WordPress 5.2. The session pauses the plugin or theme WordPress identifies, which can let you access the dashboard and investigate. See WordPress Recovery Mode documentation.

- easy to use
- Free app
- Compatible with all devices
- It gives the best comparison between ten different hosts
- Check the administrator email account, including spam, for a Recovery Mode message. If you do not receive one, confirm the configured administrator address; delivery can also fail if the server’s email system is unreliable.
- Follow the email’s special login link and read the dashboard notice to identify the component associated with the error.
- Temporarily deactivate that plugin or theme if needed to restore access. This is a diagnostic step, not a repair: the underlying compatibility problem or code defect may remain.
- After you make a repair, leave Recovery Mode and test the site in a normal session.
Recovery Mode does not cover every failure. WordPress describes it for fatal PHP errors during regular page loads; an error in a CRON job or background task may not trigger it.
If you cannot use the dashboard, isolate the plugin or theme
If there is no usable Recovery Mode link or you cannot reach administration screens, WordPress documents disabling plugins through file access as a fallback. Use FTP or your hosting provider’s file manager to temporarily rename the suspected plugin’s directory. Renaming a theme directory may also help when the error points to that theme. WordPress explains these options in its troubleshooting FAQ and Recovery Mode documentation.

If you do not know which extension is responsible, follow the official troubleshooting procedure rather than making broad or permanent changes. Once access returns, re-enable components carefully and check the site after each change. Ask your host or a WordPress professional for help if file or database operations are unfamiliar; an incorrect change can disrupt the site further.
Check the extension’s documentation, support information, and compatibility notes. A plugin that has not been updated since a WordPress core release may be incompatible, but it may also simply have unknown compatibility; the lack of a recent update does not prove that it caused the failure. See WordPress’s plugin management guidance.
Choose between repair and rollback
If deactivating the identified component restores the site, look for a compatible release, follow the developer’s repair instructions, or consider replacing an unmaintained component. If core files or the database were damaged, a known-good backup may be the safer recovery path. WordPress recommends backing up before updates and documents restoring a backup and, where appropriate, previous-version files in its WordPress update guidance.
- Check what the backup contains. A site backup may include both files and the database. Restoring only one when both changed can leave the installation inconsistent.
- Match the restore to the failure. If only core files are affected, follow WordPress’s version-specific recovery and update instructions rather than copying arbitrary files over the installation.
- Use host-specific instructions where needed. Database and hosting restore procedures vary by provider. If you are unsure what changed or how to restore it, contact the host before proceeding.
Remove a stale maintenance screen only after an update stops
If the site continues to display “Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance” after an update has failed, a lingering .maintenance file may be responsible. First confirm that WordPress is no longer running the update. Then WordPress documents removing the file from the WordPress directory over FTP. See Updating WordPress and the troubleshooting FAQ.

After removing it, load both the public site and dashboard. Check whether the update completed or whether the affected component still needs repair.

PHP is controlled by the hosting provider at the server level, not by a standard WordPress dashboard setting. Before changing the server’s PHP version, back up the site and check compatibility for WordPress, themes, and plugins. Contact the host for server-level changes or help with a restore. WordPress outlines these precautions in its PHP update guidance; its version examples may be dated, so check current WordPress and PHP compatibility information rather than treating those examples as current recommendations.

Once you can reach the dashboard, open Tools > Site Health and review messages about background updates, PHP, connectivity to api.wordpress.org, and pending plugin updates. These signals can narrow the investigation, but they do not establish on their own which component caused the break. See WordPress’s Site Health documentation.
Verify the repair before resuming updates
After making a repair or restore, test the site in the order that matters to your visitors and business. Include:
- The front page and representative inner pages.
- Login and dashboard access.
- Forms, checkout, or other critical workflows used by the site.
- Browser console or network behavior relevant to the original failure.
If the change appears not to show, clear relevant caches before assuming it did not take effect; cached pages can make changes appear absent. Re-enable plugins and themes in a controlled sequence, checking the site after each activation. Once stable, confirm that you can access a usable backup and restore process, review Site Health, and plan updates so you can recover promptly if another problem occurs. WordPress recommends regular backups before enabling automatic plugin and theme updates; see its auto-update guidance.
