What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Choose a development laptop by checking operating-system and processor compatibility first, then sizing its CPU and memory for the heaviest tools you run at the same time. An SSD is the practical choice; for the display, meet your software’s resolution guidance and consider how much readable workspace you need. There is no single specification that suits every developer: a lightweight editor has very different requirements from a professional IDE running emulators or virtual machines.
Start with operating-system and processor compatibility
Before comparing speed or price, list the IDEs, SDKs, emulators, virtual machines, target platforms, and native dependencies your work requires. Check that each supports the laptop’s operating system and processor architecture. A fast laptop is not a useful choice if a required toolchain cannot run on it.

For example, Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2026 system requirements support 64-bit Windows 11 editions, including ARM64 editions, while noting that some workloads are excluded on ARM64. Google’s Android Studio Windows requirements say that Windows machines with ARM-based CPUs are not currently supported. Those differences make it important to verify compatibility tool by tool rather than assuming one vendor’s support applies to another’s.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Match the CPU to builds and virtualization
Processor needs depend on how often you compile, whether you build in parallel, and whether you run emulators or virtual machines. Microsoft recommends a quad-core or better processor for Visual Studio and says it works best with 16 cores or more. Google recommends a latest CPU microarchitecture for Android Studio and requires virtualization support to use its emulator. These are recommendations for particular tools, not a universal minimum for software development.

If your routine is mostly editing and occasional small builds, those high-end recommendations may not describe your needs. If you regularly compile large projects while an emulator, browser, containers, or other development services are active, favor a processor and cooling system suited to sustained work. Check the exact laptop configuration: processor names alone do not establish how it will perform in every project, and the cited software requirements are not comparative laptop benchmarks.
Choose RAM for the busiest simultaneous workload
Use the highest-memory situation you expect to run routinely—not just the editor—as your planning point. An IDE, emulator, browser tabs, local services, and virtual machines can all be open together. Vendor figures are useful anchors, but they apply to specific products and scenarios.

| Tool and workload | Published memory guidance |
|---|---|
| Visual Studio 2026, minimum | Microsoft lists a minimum of 4 GB of RAM; this is a product minimum, not a recommendation for a comfortable professional workflow. |
| Visual Studio, typical professional solutions | Microsoft recommends 16 GB of RAM. |
| Visual Studio, “works best” guidance | Microsoft says Visual Studio works best with 64 GB of RAM; this is an idealized vendor recommendation, not a universal laptop requirement. |
| Android Studio alone | Google lists 8 GB for Studio. |
| Android Studio with Emulator | Google lists 16 GB as the requirement and recommends 32 GB for Studio and Emulator. |
| Multiple Android Virtual Devices (AVDs) | Google estimates approximately 4 GB of memory per AVD running simultaneously. |
| Visual Studio Code | Its requirements page recommends a 1.6 GHz or faster processor and 1 GB of RAM; that lightweight-editor baseline should not be used to size a more demanding toolchain. |
The Visual Studio and Android Studio numbers describe different products and workloads, so they should not be treated as directly interchangeable benchmarks. In particular, Microsoft’s 16 GB recommendation for typical professional solutions is distinct from its 64 GB “works best” guidance. Choose more memory when your normal workload combines several large tools or when you expect to keep a laptop for years; memory upgrades may be limited or impossible on some laptop designs, so check whether the configuration can be upgraded before buying.
Prefer an SSD and plan capacity around your toolchain
Both Microsoft and Google recommend SSD storage for their development software. An SSD is the sensible default for a development machine, where the operating system, IDEs, SDKs, source trees, and build artifacts all need local space.

The official requirements do not establish a universal installed capacity such as 512 GB or 1 TB. Google’s Android Studio requirements call for an SSD with 32 GB or more free space, and say each additional AVD created may require up to 6 GB of additional storage. These are free-space and per-virtual-device figures, not a complete laptop-capacity prescription. Allow for the operating system, tool installations, project files, datasets, and build outputs you expect to keep locally. External storage can help if its speed and connection fit your workflow, but it does not replace checking the space needed for active tools and projects.

Meet the resolution guidance for the applications you use, then consider physical screen size, scaling, clarity, and vertical space. Microsoft says Visual Studio works best at 1920 × 1080 or higher; Google recommends 1920 × 1080 for Android Studio. Those figures describe resolution guidance, not a guarantee that a particular panel will be comfortable: display size and operating-system scaling affect how much code and how many panels fit on screen.

A larger or taller display can make it easier to view code alongside tool windows, while a compact laptop is easier to carry. If you mostly work at a desk, an external monitor may provide more workspace without requiring a large laptop. Balance that option against the need to work comfortably when away from the desk.

Make the trade-offs fit your work
- Light editing: A lightweight editor such as VS Code can run on modest hardware according to its published baseline, but that does not account for a demanding compiler, local services, emulators, or other tools you may add.
- Professional IDE work: Use the IDE’s recommendations for your project type as a starting point, and budget memory for the applications you keep open alongside it.
- Mobile or emulator-heavy development: Verify architecture support, virtualization capability, and the memory needed for the number of virtual devices you run together.
- Frequent desk-based work: Consider whether a smaller laptop plus external display better suits your budget and portability needs than a larger built-in screen.
- Long-lived or upgradeable setup: Check the exact configuration’s memory and storage upgrade options before purchase; laptop specifications and upgradeability vary by model.
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Write down the operating system, IDEs, SDKs, target platforms, and native dependencies your work requires.
- Check each tool’s current requirements for the laptop’s operating system and CPU architecture, including any workload exclusions.
- Identify your heaviest simultaneous workload: builds, IDEs, emulators, virtual machines, browsers, and local services.
- Choose a CPU with the virtualization support your workflow needs, and compare memory against the relevant tool recommendations rather than one editor’s minimum.
- Select an SSD and estimate capacity from your OS, IDEs, SDKs, virtual devices, projects, and build files; retain free space for growth.
- Check display resolution against the software guidance, then judge screen size, scaling, and workspace for how and where you work.
The requirements cited here are Microsoft, Google, and Visual Studio Code product guidance accessed or updated in 2026; they are not a single cross-laptop performance test. Use them to screen configurations, then compare actual laptops for their precise CPU, RAM, SSD, display, portability, and upgrade options.
