If Windows 11’s taskbar controls became misplaced after you enabled an experimental taskbar-position feature, first identify your Windows build and undo the feature flag only if you know how it was enabled. A forum post describes this problem on build 26220.9223 after enabling ViVeTool feature ID 59213768, but it is one user’s report—not evidence of a confirmed, widespread Windows bug or a proven fix.
What happened in the reported case?
An MSI laptop user said they ran vivetool.exe /enable /id:59213768 on Windows 11 build 26220.9223. They described different problems depending on where they placed the taskbar:

- Taskbar at the bottom: Action Center would not open, although Wi-Fi worked; thumbnail and hidden-icon menus appeared at the top of the screen.
- Taskbar at the top: Action Center opened, but Wi-Fi did not; thumbnails disappeared, and the hidden-icon menu stayed at the top.
This account establishes what one person experienced, not how common the issue is or whether the feature flag alone caused it. The thread does not report that the user tried a fix successfully. Read the forum report and replies.

Check whether your build has an official taskbar-position setting
Taskbar-position support has changed across preview builds and rollout stages, so check your Windows version and OS build before changing anything. Open Settings > System > About to see Windows specifications, including version, and Windows specifications or OS build details. The exact labels can vary by Windows release.

Microsoft Support’s August 27, 2026 preview notes for KB5120998 say: “You can now choose whether the taskbar appears at the bottom, top, left, or right side of your screen.” The documented path is Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors > Taskbar position. The update is subject to gradual rollout, so the setting may not appear on every device. Microsoft’s notes say the search box and smaller taskbar are supported only at the top and bottom.
A May 15, 2026 Windows Insider Blog post described the feature in an Experimental-channel release and listed auto-hide and the tablet-optimized taskbar as unsupported in alternate positions at that time. Those are dated preview limitations, not necessarily current limitations on later builds.

What to do if the taskbar broke after enabling ViVeTool
- Record your Windows version and OS build. Check Settings > System > About. This helps establish whether you are using a preview build and whether Microsoft’s official position setting is available to you.
- Confirm how the experimental feature was enabled. If you did not enable a feature flag yourself, do not run a ViVeTool command based only on a similar-looking symptom. If you used ViVeTool and understand which tool copy and command prompt you used, the forum reply suggests disabling the same ID with
vivetool.exe /disable /id:59213768. - Restart Windows, then check the taskbar. The forum reply recommends a reboot after disabling the flag. This is a community suggestion, not a confirmed fix; the poster did not report an outcome.
- Check Windows Update and the supported Taskbar settings for your build. If the position control is available, use it rather than re-enabling an experimental flag. Microsoft’s release notes say availability can vary during gradual rollout.
- If the shell remains broken, get guidance for your exact build before escalating. Avoid starting with cache deletion, resetting shell packages, installing a Canary build, or an in-place repair. These more invasive options were suggested in the forum, but no successful result was reported there.
ViVeTool’s documentation explains its general feature-flag commands, but it does not establish that ID 59213768 applies to every Windows build or that disabling it resolves this specific malfunction.

| Route | What the evidence establishes | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| ViVeTool feature flag | The forum user reported enabling ID 59213768 on build 26220.9223. ViVeTool documents general flag commands, not universal validity for this ID. | Use only if you know you enabled the flag and can reverse that change. The reported disable-and-reboot suggestion has no documented successful outcome. |
| Windows Settings | Microsoft’s August 27, 2026 KB5120998 preview notes document a taskbar-position control, with gradual rollout and stated support limits for the search box and smaller taskbar. | Prefer the built-in control when it is available on your build; its absence does not by itself prove a fault. |
What is—and is not—known about this malfunction
The available account ties the symptoms to one user’s attempt to enable an experimental feature, while Microsoft’s later notes document taskbar positioning as a Settings feature. Neither the forum nor Microsoft’s notes confirm that the flag caused the reported behavior or that the suggested commands fixed it. There is no established prevalence or reliability statistic for this malfunction.
