Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf a Steam game will not open, closes immediately, crashes during play, or stays marked as running, start with a computer restart, then check platform compatibility, update the operating system and drivers, verify the game files, and test for conflicting background software. The exact error message matters: a missing executable, an unavailable game, an orphaned process, and a whole-PC crash each call for different next steps.
Start with the general troubleshooting sequence
Steam notes that launch failures can have many causes across different hardware and software setups. Its general guidance is to rule out common issues in a controlled order. See Steam Support’s game launch troubleshooting guide.

- Restart the computer. Fully restart it, reopen Steam, and try the game again.
- Check compatibility and requirements. On the game’s Steam store page, confirm that it supports your operating system and compare the listed system requirements with your computer. A system near the minimum may struggle to launch or run reliably. On Linux, confirm that a Linux version is available; if you are trying an unsupported game through Proton, check its community reports before assuming the installation is broken.
- Update the operating system and relevant drivers. Use the update process for Windows, macOS, or your Linux distribution, and check for drivers appropriate to your exact hardware and operating system. On Windows, Windows Update can also provide .NET Framework updates that some AMD drivers and games require.
- Verify the game’s files. In Steam Library, right-click the game or open its gear menu, then choose Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Let the check finish before launching the game again. Steam says some files may fail verification normally because local configuration files are not replaced; that result alone does not prove the repair failed. Do not run verification while defragmenting or scanning for viruses, and verify only one game at a time. See Steam’s file verification instructions.
- Test for background-software conflicts. Temporarily close non-essential recording or overlay tools, system cleaners, performance utilities, proxies, and other software that may interfere. Change one thing at a time and retry the game so you can identify a possible conflict. If you test with antivirus or firewall protection disabled, keep the test brief and restore normal protection afterward.
If the game gets stuck or exits during launch
A game that remains at “Preparing to Launch” or closes almost immediately may have crashed as it started. Follow the general sequence above, especially checking system requirements, updating the operating system and drivers, verifying files, and temporarily closing potentially conflicting applications. On macOS or Linux, confirm that the game supports your platform. If those checks do not help, contact the game’s developer for title-specific assistance; Steam’s general advice cannot identify every game-specific cause.
If Steam says “Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)”
First check whether your antivirus or security software reported or quarantined a game file. Steam identifies mistaken antivirus quarantine as a common cause of this message. Do not treat every detection as a false positive: if you are unsure whether a file is safe, ask the antivirus provider and report the issue to Steam. Only add an exception for a file or process if you are confident it is safe.

After checking the security software, verify the game’s files using Library > game gear menu or right-click > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. If the problem remains, contact Steam Support about the missing-executable error. Steam asks for an uncropped screenshot of the error, a System Report, and a list of programs you removed while troubleshooting.
If Steam says “This game is currently unavailable”
Restart Steam, then retry after updating drivers and verifying the game files. For a third-party game, launching its executable directly from the installation folder may reveal a more specific error. Some games also rely on secondary installers bundled with the game; if installation was canceled or blocked, the required installer may need to be run manually from the game’s folder. Steam’s article for this message includes additional client-folder and permissions steps, so consult its current instructions before changing files or folders: Steam Support: “This game is currently unavailable”. Avoid deleting client or game folders based on old cleanup directions, especially if you have not protected installed content.

If Steam says “Failed to start game (app already running)”
The game may have hung or crashed without closing its process. On Windows, open Task Manager, find the game’s process, and end it before trying again. If it will not close, restart the computer. On macOS or Linux, restart the computer. If you use the Steam client beta, test the normal client as well. For continued failures, contact the game’s support team. See Steam Support’s already-running error steps.

A computer-wide restart or system screen is different from a game simply closing. Steam says these events point to a problem with the computer rather than Steam or the game. Update drivers and firmware, and check that the computer has adequate ventilation. Overheating is more plausible if slowdowns or stuttering come before the failure, but symptoms alone do not establish which component, if any, is faulty. If the problem continues, seek diagnosis from the computer manufacturer or a qualified professional instead of replacing hardware on a guess. See Steam Support’s guidance on system-wide crashes.

When to contact support
If restarting, compatibility checks, updates, file verification, and a controlled background-software test do not solve a problem limited to one game, the game’s developer is usually the right next contact for title-specific launch or crash help. Include the exact error wording, what happens when you press Play, your operating system, and the steps you have tried. For a missing-executable error, include the screenshot, System Report, and removed-program list requested by Steam. If the whole computer fails, seek computer-level diagnosis rather than treating it as a Steam-only issue.
Be cautious with repair steps that remove or reinstall software. Steam warns that uninstalling Steam can delete game content; preserve your installed files and follow current official instructions before repairing the client.
