A 400 response means the screenshot service received your request but rejected it as a bad request. In n8n, open the failed execution, read the service’s response body, then compare the endpoint, method, parameters, body format, headers, and capture URL with that provider’s current API documentation. There is no single fix that applies to every screenshot API.
Start with the response, not a retry
Open the failed workflow execution and inspect the HTTP Request node’s error details. Record the response status and full body, the request URL and method, and the parameters and headers n8n sent. A message such as “Bad request – please check your parameters” is generic; the provider’s response body may identify the actual missing or invalid field.

For diagnosis, n8n’s HTTP Request node can be configured to include response headers and status or to use the “Never Error” response option. These settings expose a response for inspection or workflow handling; they do not repair an invalid request. See the HTTP Request node documentation.
Verify the API endpoint and method
Check the screenshot service’s current documentation for the exact hostname, path, API version, and HTTP method. A typo or deprecated endpoint can produce a bad request. Keep the two URLs in a screenshot request separate in your diagnosis:

- API endpoint: the service URL n8n sends the request to.
- Target page URL: the website the service is asked to capture, usually passed as a parameter or body field.
Do not substitute the target page URL for the API endpoint, or vice versa. n8n’s HTTP Request node common-issues documentation identifies invalid endpoints, including typos and deprecated API paths, as a possible request problem.
Check parameter names, values, and arrays
Compare every query parameter with the screenshot provider’s API reference. Check exact spelling and capitalization, required fields, supported values, and whether a value must be a number, Boolean, or string. n8n notes that invalid query parameter names or values and incorrectly formatted array parameters are common causes of 400 responses. Its guidance is: “Review the API documentation for your service to format your query parameters.”

Array parameters can be serialized in different ways, including repeated unbracketed keys, bracket-suffixed keys, or indexed brackets. Choose the representation specified by the provider; these forms are not interchangeable by default. In n8n, review the query-parameter array-format setting and compare the resulting request with the provider’s example.

If the provider expects a request body, set the HTTP Request node’s body type to match. n8n supports JSON, form-data, form URL-encoded, binary-file, and raw bodies. Each is a different wire format, so choosing the wrong one—or using field names from another format—can cause rejection.

- JSON: use when the API specifies a JSON object and send the content type the provider requires.
- Form-data: use for multipart fields or file uploads when the API expects multipart/form-data. Confirm exact field names and file configuration.
- Form URL-encoded: use only when the API documents URL-encoded fields.
- Binary-file or raw: use when the endpoint expects a file or raw payload, with the documented content type.
Also verify authentication and any required headers against the provider’s own documentation. The n8n HTTP Request documentation describes the available body formats; the target API determines which one is correct.
Validate the target screenshot URL
Check that the page URL is complete, uses a scheme accepted by the provider, and is encoded and passed in the field the API expects. URL access restrictions differ between services. For example, screenshot-api.net’s documentation says it rejects non-HTTP(S) schemes, private or reserved addresses, embedded credentials, and ports other than 80, 443, 8080, and 8443. Those are that service’s rules, not universal restrictions for screenshot APIs.

Compare n8n with a known-good cURL request
Find a working cURL example in the documentation for the exact provider and endpoint. n8n supports importing cURL into an HTTP Request node. After import, compare the method, endpoint, query parameters, headers, authentication, and body with the example. Imported parameter values are strings, so check whether the API expects numbers or Booleans and adjust the node’s expressions or values accordingly.

- Copy the provider’s documented cURL request, replacing only the example target URL or credentials as needed.
- Import it into the HTTP Request node, or map each cURL option to the corresponding n8n field.
- Inspect the resulting node configuration and verify data types, array format, body encoding, and content type.
- Run the node once and compare its response body with the original error.
Separate malformed requests from connectivity problems
A 400 is an HTTP response from a service, so the request reached a server capable of answering it. A connection refusal or timeout is a different failure mode. If the response identifies a missing field, invalid value, or unsupported URL, fix the request rather than retrying it unchanged; repeated attempts will generally repeat a deterministic validation failure.

An individual n8n GitHub issue, opened April 22, 2026, reports an HTTP Request v4.4 multipart upload returning 400 with “No file field in request,” while the reporter said cURL worked. That report is a specific file-upload case, not evidence that a screenshot API 400 has the same cause.
