How to Troubleshoot a Sanity Plugin After Patching It Locally

Trace a locally patched Sanity plugin from package build and yalc link through Studio registration, compatibility, runtime requirements, and network checks.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a local Sanity plugin edit is not appearing in Studio, first confirm that Studio is loading the local package you changed—not another installed copy—and that the plugin package is being rebuilt or watched. Then verify Studio is running in development mode, the plugin is registered, its versions are compatible, and its runtime or network prerequisites are met.

Start with the symptom and the Studio you are testing

Make sure the browser is showing the local Studio started from the project directory you intended. Before changing dependencies or configuration, note the browser console errors and the Studio terminal output; they can distinguish a stale package from an import, build, or network failure.

For live Studio-file changes, start the local development server with sanity dev or the project’s dev script. Sanity’s local development guidance explains that a production preview does not provide the same hot-module reload behavior for Studio file changes.

If edits do not appear, verify the local package pipeline

A source edit affects Studio only when Studio resolves the package build containing that edit. Sanity’s plugin development guide documents a local workflow using @sanity/plugin-kit and yalc: run the plugin’s link-watch command so package changes reload, then make the local package available to the Studio project through yalc.

  1. In the plugin package: start its documented link-watch command and leave it running while you edit. Confirm the command completes successfully and rebuilds or watches the package as expected.
  2. In the Studio project: follow the yalc instructions generated by the plugin workflow. The documented sequence typically uses yalc add <package>, yalc link <package>, and then installs dependencies with the project’s package manager.
  3. Confirm what Studio actually resolves: check the package manager’s output and the Studio project’s dependency tree for the package name and installed local version. Do not assume that editing a nearby source folder changes the package Studio imports.
  4. Restart only after recording the current evidence: if the link or build state appears stale, rebuild the plugin, relink it, install dependencies, and restart the dev server. This is a controlled way to retest the documented build-and-link workflow, not a universal reset command.

Avoid deleting the lockfile or broad caches as an initial fix. That can change dependency resolution and make the original problem harder to identify.

If the plugin fails to load, check import and registration

In the Studio configuration, verify that the import uses the package name you linked, that the imported symbol is actually exported by that package, and that the plugin is included in the plugins array passed to defineConfig. Configuration is typically in the project-root sanity.config.ts or sanity.config.js file. Sanity’s installation and configuration guide covers installing and registering plugins.

Compare the package import and export with the startup error in the browser console or terminal. A misspelled package name, missing export, or omitted plugin registration can look like a patch that had no effect, but each points to a different configuration issue.

Compare the installed versions and runtime requirements

Check the version Studio has installed, not just the version in the plugin source or package metadata you are inspecting. Sanity notes that plugins must be compatible with the Studio version; compare the plugin’s declared Sanity peer dependencies with the Sanity packages installed in the Studio. Check the package’s own compatibility requirements rather than assuming a universal version range. See Sanity’s plugin installation guidance and Studio upgrade guidance.

Also confirm that the shell running both the plugin and Studio commands uses a supported Node.js version. Sanity’s installation page, last updated September 17, 2026, specifies Node.js v22.12 or later for installing and running Studio locally. If a build or install fails, capture the package manager’s complete error output and verify the active Node version before changing dependencies.

If requests fail, separate network problems from plugin code

When the Studio shell loads incompletely or plugin requests fail, inspect the browser’s DevTools Console and Network panel. Sanity identifies VPN-related HTTP downgrades, TLS-inspecting proxies, and DNS filtering of *.sanity.io as possible blockers in its network troubleshooting guide. In the Network panel’s Protocol column, h1 or http/1.1 indicates HTTP/1.1; record failed requests and their errors before attributing the failure to plugin code.

Use the symptom to choose the first check

What you observe First checks
No visible change after editing Confirm link-watch is running, the Studio has the yalc-linked package, and the Studio is running with sanity dev or the project’s development script.
Plugin import or startup error Check the package name and exported symbol, plugin registration in defineConfig, the version Studio installed, and compatibility with the Studio version.
Studio or plugin requests fail Inspect Console and Network errors, the request protocol, and possible VPN, TLS-inspection, or DNS-filtering interference.
Build or install command fails Check the active Node.js version and full package-manager output; Sanity’s installation guidance specifies Node.js v22.12 or later for local Studio installation and operation.

If the first checks do not isolate the cause, keep the test controlled: preserve the original errors, verify the linked package and installed version, rebuild and relink, reinstall with the project’s package manager, and restart the development server. The exact cause depends on the project’s package manager, package metadata, error output, and installed Studio and plugin versions.
