Compare prepared deli wings using the current price per pound for the same type of product. If a package shows only its total price and weight, divide the price by the weight in pounds. Keep bone-in and boneless wings separate, and don’t compare cooked deli wings directly with raw wings without accounting for cooking loss.
Calculate the price per pound
Use the per-pound price printed on the label when it is available. For a package labeled with a total price and weight, use this formula:

Price per pound = package price ÷ package weight in pounds

If the weight is given in ounces, divide the ounces by 16 to convert to pounds before calculating. A posted per-pound price is usually the simplest basis for comparison.

Compare like with like
Before deciding which price is lower, check that you are comparing the same kind of prepared wings. USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) reports treat prepared bone-in and boneless wings as distinct categories.
- Product form: Compare bone-in with bone-in and boneless with boneless. These forms differ in edible-meat share, so their total-weight prices do not by themselves show which offers more meat for the money.
- Preparation and sale condition: Note whether wings are fried or baked, and whether they are sold hot, chilled, or in another condition. Differences may affect whether the products are a fair match.
- Price context: Record the store, location, date, and whether the price is a regular shelf price or an advertised special. Prices and promotions vary.
- What the weight includes: Ordinary shelf-label comparisons use the product’s total weight, not just edible meat. Bones and coatings are part of that comparison.
Use dated price reports as context, not as today’s quote
USDA AMS reports dated retail features, not every store’s current deli-counter price. Its examples show how prices can vary by region and date:

|---|---|---|
| Conventional prepared fried or baked bone-in wings | $7.99–$8.99 per pound | Week of March 23, 2026; Northeast |
| Conventional prepared fried or baked bone-in wings | $4.99–$8.99 per pound | Week of March 23, 2026; Southeast |
| Conventional prepared fried or baked bone-in wings, weighted average | $8.69 per pound | Week of February 2, 2026; Southeast |
| Conventional prepared fried or baked boneless wings, weighted average | $8.63 per pound | Week of February 2, 2026; Southeast |
These are dated, regional figures, not a single national current price or a guarantee of what a particular store charges. Check the labels at the stores you shop on the day you plan to buy. USDA’s older advertised figures are also not deli-price substitutes: the Economic Research Service reported a national average retail feature price of $4.29 per pound at the start of the 2022 March Madness tournament and $2.62 per pound as of January 13, 2023. Both are historical feature prices for wings generally, not current prepared deli-wing prices.
Keep cooked deli wings separate from raw wings
Raw wings lose weight during cooking, and bone-in wings include bone weight. A raw price per pound therefore is not directly comparable with the shelf price of cooked deli wings. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension states, “Comparisons of raw product costs to cooked product costs are not generally valid because of normal yield losses occurring during cooking.”

- Chicken Raised Cage Free
For an edible-product comparison, a yield figure must match the product and preparation being considered. Texas A&M’s worked chicken-yield examples illustrate the calculation but do not establish a yield for deli wings. The USDA Food Buying Guide describes yield in terms of cooked, ready-to-serve meat obtained from a pound purchased, but it does not provide a universal prepared deli-wing yield. Do not apply unrelated chicken-yield examples as if they were wing-specific.
If your question is which product delivers more edible meat for the money, compare similar cooked products and use a reliable edible-yield measure for those products. Without one, the shelf-label calculation compares price per pound of total product, not value per pound of meat.

Why price per wing is a different comparison
Price per wing counts pieces rather than weight. Wing size and package piece count can vary, so a lower price per piece does not necessarily mean a lower price per pound. Use the per-pound measure for this comparison; treat a per-wing figure as a separate metric and rely on it only when the piece count is known.
