If your Samsung Galaxy camera says “Camera Failed,” freezes, or shows no preview, start by restarting the device. Then reset the Camera app, check for updates, and use Safe mode to see whether a downloaded app is interfering. These checks progress from low-impact software steps to more disruptive options; a factory reset erases device data, so reserve it for last. Menu names and availability vary by model, software version, and region.
Start with a restart
A temporary system or app error can keep the Camera app from opening. Restart your Galaxy phone or tablet, then open Camera and test it again. The restart controls differ by model; use the button or power-menu instructions for your device. Samsung lists restarting as an initial check for camera problems (Samsung: Camera will not open on Samsung Galaxy device).

Reset the Camera app without wiping your phone
If the camera still will not open, reset Camera settings to their defaults. Samsung also recommends clearing Camera app data for an app that will not launch. On many devices, the path is Settings > Apps > Camera > Storage > Clear data; labels can differ by software version.

Clearing Camera data resets its settings, but Samsung says it does not delete photos and videos saved on the device. This is not the same as a factory reset. More generally, clearing an app’s data can remove personal settings or data stored within that app, so be sure you are clearing data for Camera, not another app (Samsung Camera troubleshooting; Samsung: Clear the app cache and data).

Check for Camera and system updates
Check for an update to the Camera app and install any available device software updates. An internet connection is needed to check for updates. Updates are a recommended troubleshooting step, not a guarantee that a particular camera fault will be fixed. Follow Samsung’s Camera troubleshooting guidance for the update options on your device (Samsung: Issues with Camera app on Samsung phone or tablet).
Use Safe mode to check for an app conflict
Safe mode temporarily disables downloaded apps and runs the original software. If the camera works there, a downloaded app may be interfering. Remove recently installed apps one at a time, leaving Safe mode and testing the camera after each removal. If the problem continues in Safe mode, a downloaded app may not be the cause.

Safe mode entry and exit steps vary by Galaxy model. Use the instructions for your device in Samsung’s camera troubleshooting guide rather than relying on a button sequence intended for another model (Samsung Camera troubleshooting).

Understand the risk before choosing the next step

Factory reset only after backing up
If earlier checks have not resolved the problem, a factory data reset is a possible last software step. It erases data and settings on the device. Back up important data first and make sure you have the account credentials needed to set the device up again. After the reset, test the Camera app before reinstalling downloaded apps; that makes it easier to tell whether the problem returns with an app. Samsung includes factory reset as a later option for persistent Camera app issues (Samsung Camera troubleshooting).

If the camera still fails after these checks, the camera module or internal circuitry may need inspection. Samsung recommends professional diagnosis and repair at a service center (Samsung Camera troubleshooting). Do not order a replacement module or attempt a model-specific repair based only on a “Camera Failed” message: the exact device and a confirmed hardware diagnosis matter.
