If you suspect a tracker is on your vehicle, don’t try to block its signal with a jammer. Instead, use your phone’s unwanted-tracker alert or scan if you suspect a supported Bluetooth tag, check the car only where it is safe to do so, and get professional help for anything concealed or connected to the vehicle’s systems. A phone scan cannot rule out every kind of tracking device.
What does “block a GPS tracker” mean?
People use “GPS tracker” to describe different devices, but the distinction matters because the safe response depends on what you suspect:

- Bluetooth item trackers, such as AirTags and compatible tags, communicate with nearby phones and may trigger an unwanted-tracking alert. Apple and Google provide alert and scan features for supported devices.
- Installed vehicle trackers may be aftermarket equipment or part of a vehicle’s connected services. A Bluetooth scan is not a general detector for these systems.
- Radio jammers attempt to interfere with signals. They do not selectively remove or disable a tracker and can disrupt other communications.
There is no single phone setting or safe “blocker” established here that will disable every device that could report a vehicle’s location. Identify the likely device type first, then choose a response that does not put you or others at risk.

Why shouldn’t I use a GPS jammer?
In the United States, GPS.gov says federal law prohibits operating, marketing, or selling equipment intended to interfere with authorized radio communications, including GPS. It also says there is no vehicle-use exemption. The legal statement is U.S.-specific; do not assume the same law applies in another country.

Jamming can affect communications beyond the suspected tracker, including emergency calls. It is not a safe or selective way to protect vehicle privacy. As a historical enforcement example—not a current fine schedule—GPS.gov reported that the FCC imposed a $34,912,500 fine in May 2016 over the marketing of 285 models of signal-jamming devices to U.S. customers.
What should I do if my phone alerts me to a tracker?
On iPhone
- Open the unwanted-tracker alert and review the available information, including any map shown.
- Use the alert’s sound or nearby-finding feature, when available, to help locate the compatible item. Apple recommends checking belongings; a vehicle is one possible hiding place.
- If you find a device, save its alert and identifying information if it is safe to do so. Follow Apple’s device-specific instructions to disable it; turning off Bluetooth or location services on your phone should not be treated as disabling the tracker.
- If you cannot find the device and feel at risk, go to a safe public place and contact local law enforcement. Apple says law enforcement may be able to request information from Apple about an Apple tracker.
On Android
- Use the system’s unknown-tracker alert or manual scan for supported tags. Google’s guidance lists compatible tracker types and provides manufacturer-specific instructions.
- Review any location information available, then check the vehicle or other belongings only if it is safe to do so.
- If you find a tag, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to disable it. Google says you may work with local law enforcement, which may request the tracker or its identifier.
These phone features address supported Bluetooth item trackers. An alert—or the absence of one—does not establish whether a vehicle has an installed GPS or cellular unit.

How can I check my car if there’s no phone alert?
If you have a specific reason to be concerned, start with a visual check of spaces you can inspect without risk. Do not dismantle trim, reach into unsafe areas, or touch unfamiliar wiring without the proper expertise. An LED telescoping inspection mirror can help you see into some accessible gaps; it is only a visual aid, not an electronic detector or proof that the vehicle is clear.

Can my phone find every GPS tracker in my car?
No. Apple’s and Google’s alert and manual-scan guidance concerns compatible Bluetooth trackers. It does not promise to find every GPS or cellular unit installed in a vehicle, nor does a clean scan prove there is no tracker. Treat the scan as one useful check for supported tags, not a comprehensive vehicle inspection.
What if the concern is GPS or cellular signal loss?
A device losing GPS or cellular service does not, by itself, prove that someone is using a jammer or tracking the vehicle. GPS.gov notes that interference can have human or natural causes. It recommends contacting the wireless provider and troubleshooting equipment and connectivity first.

If those checks do not explain the problem and intentional interference remains a concern, GPS.gov directs users to the FCC. For civilian GPS interference, it also names the U.S. Coast Guard Navigation Center. GPS.gov’s stated reporting guidance is: “Civilian GPS users experiencing problems from suspected radio interference should report them to the U.S. Coast Guard Navigation Center and/or the FCC.”

No. Rules depend on jurisdiction and circumstances, so a legal example from one place should not be treated as a rule for every reader. Florida’s 2026 statute, for example, prohibits specified nonconsensual placement or use of a tracking device or application to determine another person’s or their property’s location. It also lists exceptions, including certain law-enforcement activity and vehicle-owner use subject to conditions. If the legal position matters to your situation, check local law or consult a qualified local professional.
